alright, it’s 4 in the morning. know what that means? discussion time, babey
for some reason hoo was SUPER interested in talking about characters’ “types”, as in the traits they find attractive in another person. and most of the time, this came off as unnecessary, which is why so many people have criticized it (especially nico’s confession lmao but moving on). the exception to that is leo—a significant part of his character revolved around loneliness and desiring a relationship, so tossing in the trivia re: what he looks for in a relationship becomes relevant to... a significant part of his character.
(do i think he could have had more development? yes. and do i think giving him a girlfriend was a viable fix-it for his trauma, rsd, and probable depression? no, and i don’t think we should encourage kids to turn to romantic relationships as a solution to all their problems either. but that’s another post)
so i just think it’s funny that leo, despite being desperately lonely and specifically seeking out a romantic relationship to fill that void, explicitly goes for girls who he knows will not return his feelings.
this excerpt is about thalia, but it could really apply to any of his love interests. khione is a goddess who not only expressed zero interest toward him, she actively planned to kill him. hazel had a boyfriend already. not gonna comment on that further that’s another post. calypso hated him at first, but even when he thought she was rude as hell, he describes her as perfect and beautiful—too perfect and beautiful, actually, so she’s totally not his type and—no she’s exactly his type as described, perhaps especially because she tells him he’s unattractive and the gods are punishing her by forcing her to spend time with him
and so overall what we have here is a boy who was apparently raised in a fairly conservative, or at least religious and most likely christian, environment (people generally don’t call you a demon as a way to outcast you and brand you as evil if they don’t believe in all that to begin with).
and he is convinced that he falls in love at first sight with every pretty girl—oh, but the pretty girl in question has to be COMPLETELY unattainable as far as he can tell, so by his estimate they will never reciprocate his feelings and he will never have a relationship with them, but not because he DOESN’T want a relationship with them because he TOTALLY does, it’s just unfortunate for him that he ONLY likes girls when he’s pretty sure he’ll never end up dating them and—are y’all picking up what i’m putting down
