I love battle couples ok.
Fighting side by side. Trusting each other completely. Trying to protect each other. Casual banter in the middle of a fight. Their teamwork. Sparring each other to keep their skills sharp. Getting uncontrollably angry if the other gets hurt. Kissing each other when they’re victorious.
I seriously have a thing for battle couples.

Master Baggins was, as ever, stubborn and determined to defy every word and circumstance that denied his personal autonomy...even if it was an obvious ailment that neither he, nor his body could ignore. Thorin had to rush to try to catch him when he lost his footing, but he only barely managed to break the Hobbit’s fall.
“You are far from fine,” Thorin felt obligated to point out, even as it was painfully obvious. “And beyond sitting, I should think. Oin must have a look at you.”
But they were, the two of them, still currently far from Oin and the rest of the company and it didn’t seem likely Bilbo was going to manage on his own two feet.
“I can either hoist you on my back or in my arms- I leave the choice with you.”

It’s more affectionate than Thorin usually allows for Durin’s heir, but times are dire and even future Kings need a word of reassurance when the impossible is facing them down.
“But know this; no matter how this ends, our names will be etched into the stone of eternity; not because of our birthright…but because we made the effort to fight for what is rightfully ours to the last breath.”

“Then don’t,” is Thorin’s reply, something that seems so offhanded and careless, particularly from the way he continues to focus on chopping wood. “No one’s putting a knife to your neck.”
Maybe that’s simplifying matters just a tad. Maybe the slight bitterness in his tone that betrays a sense of caring about this too much explains why he can’t make eye contact.
