also, for the folks yelling at Calum that he’s poc. let’s break this down. he’s half white, half Māori. he’s also very successful with lots of money. he does have privilege. he is still visibly poc. the cops won’t physical differentiate him in a protest–they will only see a brown body. they can and have a real chance of subjecting him to physical violence.
but internally, he’s doing the right thing. he’s learning about his own privilege, he’s learning how this white heritage has provided a privilege for him. he’s learning about how his money has provided a privilege for him. he’s learning about what ways those privileges oppress other people. unlike Luke, Michael, and Ashton who can subject their physical bodies if they so choose and know they won’t receive physical violence in return as they protect other Black bodies–Calum still has to figure out how to navigate the political soundscape for himself, so he can recognize his own privilege and learn how to use it to ampifly the Black community, and uplift our voices.
