Beginner Witch Tips - Kitchen Witch Edition

  • The oven can be your hearth. If a spell or ritual requires a hearth, your stove is just that. That being said, do not set anything on fire in your oven. Bad! No!
  • You don't need separate kitchen and altar herbs, although it is handy.
  • Some crystals can be used in kitchen magic, but I don't recommend putting them in or on anything other than a crystal on top of firm dough as it rests/rises. Secure crystals onto mixing equipment or spoons, or forgo using them at all.
  • Listen to witchy music as you cook or bake. I promise atmosphere is almost everything! It helps me focus. I recommend Peter Gundry.
  • While pets are cute and certainly carry spiritual energy with them, try to keep them out of the kitchen while you cook, especially if you have a certain intention you're trying to carry into your food. Their presence can distract you, throw off the energy you have accumulated, or otherwise disrupt the process. Once you're more confident with your kitchen witchery, their presence won't be such a big deal.
  • Take your time. It's okay. Sometimes it takes a while to truly clock into your spiritual energy while you're actively moving about and busy working, especially if you're used to practicing while sitting or standing in one spot. Remember - energy flows with you, not just around you.
  • Start small. Start with something simple like pancakes. For example: add a dash of vanilla to your pre-made batter mix to invoke self-love.
  • Write down things as you continue to work. Document what you're comfortable with, what you feel like you're good at, your project, and everything you feel you might want to. As you continue to work on that journal, you can go back and see how you've progressed!
  • Happy baking! Remember, your mood affects your project; negative emotions = negative influence.

Pumpkin Cupcakes Feel-Good Abundance Spell Recipe

Yes yes yes, I know it's still summer and autumn is a loooong way away, but damnit, sometimes I want to call forth my Inner White Girl and indulge in pumpkin spice! Well, luckily for me (and for you!), I have a perfect recipe for you - because not only is it a dozen pumpkin spice mini cakes, but also a feel-good and abundance spell. So here's my abundance spell recipe - complete with cream cheese frosting and DIY pumpkin spice mix! So, without further ado, here we go!

What you'll need:

Pumpkin pie spice:

  • 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon (adds power to the spell, prosperity, success)
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger (adds strength to the spell)
  • 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg (money)
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice (money, luck)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves (success)
  • Bowl
  • Spoon, fork, or whisk

Cakes:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar (banishes negativity)
  • 3/4 cup melted butter (enhances peacefulness)
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (abundance)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (self-love)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (protection, grounding)
  • Cupcake liners (I like these! Unbleached, chlorine-free)
  • Wire rack (optional)
  • Whisk, hand mixer, or stand mixer
  • Large mixing bowl

Cream cheese frosting:

  • 1/2 cup softened butter (enhances peacefulness)
  • 8 ounces softened cream cheese (meeting goals)
  • 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar (banishes negativity)
  • splash of vanilla extract (self-love)
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Hand mixer, or stand mixer (trust me, you'll want a hand or stand mixer for this)
  • Piping bags (optional)

What you'll do:

Pumpkin pie spice:

  • Add all ingredients into a bowl
  • Mix mix mix
  • All done!

Cakes:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees (F) and line a 12-cup muffin baking pan with paper liners
  • Place the wet ingredients (eggs, sugar, pumpkin puree, and butter) in a bowl or stand mixer bowl. Whisk or mix until smooth.
  • Add the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, baking powder, pumpkin pie spice, vanilla extract, and salt) to the bowl. Stir until just combined.
  • Divide the batter among the 12 muffin cups.
  • Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until just browned and a toothpick inserted in the center of a cupcake comes out clean. A chopstick also works but leaves a bigger hole. Don't worry, you can cover it up with frosting.
  • Cool for a few minutes in the pan on the wire rack, then transfer the cupcakes to the wire rack to cool completely. Don't frost until the cupcakes are completely cool!

Cream cheese frosting:

  • Put the butter and cream cheese in the bowl of a mixer or a mixing bowl and mix until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, and mix on low speed until combined. Add the vanilla extract and mix for a minute.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add 1 teaspoon of milk at a time until desired consistency is reached. You can use any kind of milk, but I don't recommend soy.
  • Optionally, you can put the frosting in a piping bag and pipe the frosting on the cupcakes. Or you can just dollop it on with a spoon. Or, if you're like a monster like me, you can put a cupcake in a bowl and scoop in some frosting with it. Oh who am I kidding, I mash it all up together like an ungodly goop...

I know it's a long post, but I promise it's actually quite easy! And delicious. Very, very delicious.

So, about that cookbook y'all wanted...

I am left with an incredibly high vet bill that I'm struggling to pay off. As such, I finally relented to what some of you were asking for; basically, making a witchy cookbook with all my kitchen magic recipes. However, I'm not sure how to go about this.

I want to make these books nice, so I found leather binders on sale and plan to use page protectors and fanciful witchy recipe print-outs to make each book roughly 50-80 recipes (depending on how many pages fit in the binders). That makes production costs roughly $15 each. I'd want to make at least $10 profit off each book, so I'd have to price them at a minimum of $25, and that's not including shipping.

So, I used a few ideas from my followers.

  1. I could produce a few physical copies and hold raffles for each one. Tickets would be $5 each through Ko-Fi. You'd send me the $5 with a message with your Tumblr. Then I'll randomly pick one person and send them the book. Not my favorite idea, but an idea nonetheless.
  2. I could sell them for about $35-$40 (in total, including shipping within the U.S.A.) each.
  3. I could forgo making them physically and clump them together digitally and sell them that way. I would price them at $.25 a recipe, so that's $12.50 for 50 recipes or $20 for 80. I'd post this on Ko-Fi.
  4. I could sell physical copies of each recipe. I'd charge $3.50 for the recipe, plus shipping (which completely depends on how many recipes are ordered). I'm capping out the total cost of shipping at $5, so no matter how many one person orders, they'll never pay more than $5 for shipping within the U.S.A. Outside of the U.S.A., I'll have to find out the shipping and get back to you on that.
  5. OR I could sell each recipe digitally for $1.50. I'd post these on Ko-Fi (I already have a few there).

Kitchen Staples and Their Properties

If you're any kind of kitchen user, there are a few things that are usually present. Things like bread, cheese, beans, and vinegar are all things that many kitchens keep in stock. So, here is a list of some staples you may have in your kitchen, and what they mean.

  • Bread: health, abundance, the hearth, kindship
  • Beans: wisdom in choices, luck, money, divination, prosperity
  • Butter: peace, friendships/relationships, spirituality
  • Cheese: goal completion, happiness, moon magic, health
  • Eggs: feminine/goddess magic, fertility, mysticism
  • Honey: joy, love, sex, wisdom, lust, purification, health
  • Milk (Cow's): feminine parenthood/guidance, love, sustenance, spirituality,
  • Rice: fertility, protection, luck, money, growth
  • Salt: purification, protection, grounding, cleansing
  • Sugar: banishing negativity, love, affection, invoking kindness/sweetness
  • White Vinegar: cleansing, purification, protection

Adding some things together melds their properties! Cooking in butter for your friends can strengthen your relationships with them, and baking bread can bring abundance into your home.

Strawberries

Easily one of my favorite foods, strawberries are more than a sweet treat to enjoy. They're also a powerful tool in kitchen magic, with a variety of wonderful uses that includes my strawberry sweet day spell recipe. In this post, we'll go more in-depth into their uses and benefits.

Strawberries are great for multiple things, but their most commonly 'used' properties include invoking success, luck, and good circumstances. However, they are also used in kitchen magic involving love and affection. The leaves are symbols of luck, and they may also ease the pain of pregnancy and childbirth.

Personally, my favorite use of strawberries includes success and luck. Such as my sweet day pancake spell, which uses strawberries to invoke a successful and luckily pleasant day. However, they also make delightful self-love sugar syrup. If you want my recipe for that, let me know!

There's also use for the 'scraps' - strawberry tops. Although completely edible, most people I know tend not to eat them. So, here are a few ways I use strawberry tops.

  • If you're the kind of person to just slice off the tops with some of the fruit, brew strawberry tea! Boil two cups of water, turn off the heat once it boils, throw in two handfuls of strawberry tops, and let 'em steep for about ten to fifteen minutes. You can add sugar or honey, or even brew some black tea and use the strawberry tops to make strawberry black tea.
  • Throw in sliced-off tops or the leaves (if you're a leaf-picker like me) into a smoothie. You can't tell the leaves are in there and it's packed full of nutrients and vitamins!
  • Make strawberry sugar syrup. As stated before, if you want the recipe, let me know and I can make a post!

Sleepy Herbs in Witchcraft

Shh, it's sleepy time. Here are some herbs that can help you rest better.

  • Anise: Put anise in your pillow to protect you from disturbing dreams
  • Catnip: Keep above your bed to protect you while you sleep.
  • Celery Seed: Use in a sleep pillow to help you fall asleep faster.
  • Chamomile: Drinking it as a tea reduces stress and helps you sleep faster, and sounder.
  • Dandelion Root: Use in a sleep pillow to protect you while you sleep.
  • Lavender: Drink in a tea, use in a bath, keep in a sleep pillow, or keep in your room to help you gain a restorative, calm sleep. Also protects against nightmares.
  • Lettuce: Yes, really. Eat lettuce to promote sleep.
  • Poppy Seeds: Eating poppy seeds or using them in a sleep pillow may provide some relief from insomnia.
  • Spearmint: Drink spearmint tea to induce lovely, restorative dreams.
  • Thyme: Use in sleep pillows to block nightmares.
  • Valerian: Pit in a sleep pillow for restful sleep.

Hi- I’m sorry if my ideas are stupid or make no sense, I’ve had a long day and my brain is fried :) but is it possible you could do a mixture of the above ideas you already had?

Maybe you could sell physical ones made to order if someone wants, but also sell individual digital books/recipes for those who don’t want or can’t afford the full physical copy? I’m thinking of folks on Etsy who sell BOS pages and recipes, etc, and they have several options depending on what someone’s preferences are. I’m not saying you have to use Etsy, I hear their rates are high, but something like that could be a way to get more folks interested in buying cause they could just be interested in one digital recipe or want all the way up to a full physical book.

Just my first thought that came to mind, totally understand if that’s not possible for you but thought I’d share :) Either way, I’d personally love whatever format you choose to make! Thanks for doing this work and involving others in your process.

This is actually such a a good idea. I'll keep this in mind and when the votes come in, I'll see what the general consensus is before implementing any total idea. I'll probably stick with Ko-Fi because Etsy is... not great.

Easy Color Magic Chart

This is the super simple, super easy list I have in my grimoire for colors and color magic. It makes it easier to decide what candles, wax, ink, etc. to use. I don't remember where I got it since it's been in my book for quite a long while, but it hasn't ever failed me.

  • Red: Grounding energy, Strength, Passion, Courage, Lust, Charisma
  • Orange: Creativity, Success, Justice, Opportunity, Ambition
  • Yellow: Intelligence, Learning, Reason, Focus, Confidence, Memory, Happiness
  • Green: Nature, Healing, Money, Love, Fertility, Growth, Self-Awareness
  • Blue: Communication, Traveling, Expressing yourself, Forgiveness, Tranquility
  • Purple: Influence, Psychic Abilities, Authority, Wisdom, Knowledge
  • Brown: Home, Protection, Animals, Stability, Family, Loyalty
  • Black: Banishing Negativity, Loyalty, Protection, Binding, Transmutation
  • White: Spirituality, Peace, Higher Self, Purity, Learning

You can also supplement any unavailable candles with a white candle, though I suggest carving the intention of your spellwork into the wax to really seal the deal.

Simple Things Baby Witches Might Miss

I was a baby witch once, and there were tons of small, little things that went over my head until later in my practice. I'm hoping that some of these will ring a bell for those who may need to hear them.

  • When you're cleansing a room, especially if it's a smoke cleanse, you need to open a window. This gives an 'escape route' for what you're cleansing away and also gives the smoke somewhere to go other than sticking to your walls.
  • Speaking of smoke cleansing, do not smoke cleanse in a room with pets in it. It can be very, very dangerous to them.
  • When you're doing research, you should be cross-checking across four to six different sources. If something matches across multiple sources, it's more likely to be solid.
  • You can incorporate your craft into pretty much anything. Showering? You're washing off the bad energy. Cleaning? You're preparing your space. Gardening? You're encouraging growth and prosperity. And delicious tomatoes!
  • If you're using a smoke cleanse, you can add the burnt portion to salt to make a beginner's black salt.
  • Spell jars don't have to go on your altar.
  • Altars are not completely necessary, especially if you're in the broom closet. Work with what you have.
  • Every herb has benefits and correspondences. You can utilize these without spell jars, burn spells, etc. Kitchen magic is one of my go-tos - cooking with spices and herbs infuses your food with their benefits.
  • Ask 'dumb' questions. Reach out to people. If they laugh at you for your questions, you know they are not a reliable source of information. (P.S. - my ask box is always open!)
  • White wax can replace any other color of wax. Get birthday cake candles for easy, fast burning.
  • Clear quartz can replace other crystals.

Cascarilla (Dried Eggshell Powder)

Cascarilla is a powerful tool in witchcraft. It's purifying, protective, and helps prevent non-corporeal entities from entering your path. But how does one make it, Ander? Well, I'm so glad you asked because this post is all about how to make it.

Here's what you'll need.

  • Eggshells
  • A pot
  • A half-gallon of moon water (or a gallon if your pot is really big)
  • An oven
  • Paper towels or kitchen towels
  • baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone sheet
  • Spice grinder (or high-powered blender if you absolutely must)
  • Air-tight container

Here's what you'll do

  • Peel the membrane off of the eggshells. Trust me, the effort is worth it.
  • Boil your moon water on high and add in your eggshells. Boil for 10-12 minutes, I usually shoot for 12.
  • Drain the shells and place them on towels to dry for at least 10-12 hours. The longer, the better.
  • Once dry, place on the baking sheet with the paper/sheet underneath them and bake at 200F/93C for at least 12-15 minutes, I usually go for 13.
  • Once they're out of the oven, let them cool for a couple minutes. Once cool enough to handle, grind them in a spice grinder and store the powder in an air-tight container.

Sprinkle across your doorstep to prevent evil from entering, dissolve a teaspoon in a path to purify yourself, or simply sprinkle in your garden to assist your garden magic growth. As always, do your research, be safe, and blessed be!

Blueberry Lavender Jam Protection Kitchen Spell

I know blueberry and lavender don't sound appealing when they're together, but I promise it's a delicious combination when done right! Here's a simple small-batch spell recipe for a delicious blueberry and lavender jam that has protective (and life-sweetening!) qualities.

What you'll need:

  • 2 cups of fresh blueberries (Protection)
  • 1/2 cup of sugar, or more if you like it sweeter (Self-love)
  • 1 tablespoon of dried lavender buds (Protection)
  • Zest of 1 lemon and 1 tbsp lemon juice (Cleansing of negativity)

What you'd do:

  • In a pan over medium-low heat, combine sugar and berries. Feel free to mash up the blueberries a little bit as it simmers.
  • After it simmers for 2-3 minutes, add in lavender buds and lemon zest/juice. Continue to simmer until it reaches your desired consistency. Remember, it'll thicken a bit when it's cool! Take off the heat and let cool for a few minutes.
  • Pour into a boiled jar (to sterilize the jar) and refrigerate for up to a month and a half, although I suggest eating it quickly for the best results.

It's easy, it's delicious, and it's great to add a little bit of protection to your day. Enjoy, and blessed be!
