It's not fake to Elphaba in a "I just want people to like me so I'm nice" way. It's fake in a "I stopped being mean to you when it made me feel awful, and I will also stop being nice to you when it will makes me unpleased". She's not redeemed when she starts liking Elphaba, not at all.
