Hell had never really left Dean. Cas had pulled him out, lost angels in the process. But part of it had come with him. Even all these years later, he still sometimes woke with the heavy stench of sulfur filling his nostrils.

He could still see it, vivid as ever. The fifty years blended together but the landscape was stark in his mind. Bright flashes of lightning illuminating everlasting fires and tortured souls. He could see the chains in the sky, the jagged mountains, the place that had been his workstation–all of it in vivid color, seeping into his mind like a poison.

The sounds were the worst part though. He never saw them in connection with the visions–those were always silent–but they still rang in his ears. It was mostly at night, but sometimes he’d be walking down the street with Sam, on some case or rather, and see someone that looked like one of the souls that he had-

And every time he heard their piercing screams in his ear. But he could deal with those. He couldn’t deal with the small whimpers, the pleading, the defeat. The sound of a small child gasping as he dug the razor further into their neck, his eyes clouded over as he tried to be somewhere else. Because if he was in the moment, if he let himself be there, then he knew he would enjoy it. His sick, twisted mind would enjoy it. Even when he wanted to turn the razor on himself.

He didn’t talk about it anymore though. It didn’t haunt him as much now. New traumas had filled its place. But the visions of Hell somehow stung the most, rang the truest.

And more than anything in his life, Cas had been the one to help that trauma fade to background noise. Of course Sam had too. Or he’d tried. But Dean couldn’t really let Sam in. And sharing memories of Hell with Sam felt cruel, when his brother’s experience in Hell had been a million times worse. Some of that pain had been taken by Cas though.

“Cas said you’re his favorite.”

Dean fumbled with the bottle, righting it on the table before it could fall. He swallowed hard, blinking up at Jack in confusion.

“Sorry, he said what?”

Jack was smiling at him, amusement in his eyes. If Dean didn’t know any better, he’d think the kid was up to something.

“Yes! I was asking him about favorites, yesterday. He said you were his.”

Dean tried to ignore the way his heart jumped, nerves buzzing through to his fingertips.

“His favorite what, exactly?” He asked, because he knew, logically, that the kid sometimes interpreted things wrong. It was something he got from Cas, skipping from point A to point C without thinking anything of it. For all he knew, the answer could be “hunter,” or “dumbass” or “person to play poker with.”

“Human,” Jack answered. He tucked back into his cereal like it was nothing, crunching away.

It’s a few weeks after they cured Dean, the first hunt since he’s recovered from his brief stint as a demon. Their motel room is facing east, and the sunrise blinds both brothers as it creeps in through a crack in the curtain.

What wakes Sam all the way up, though, is the movement from the other bed—the one closer to the window. He blinks awake to see Dean, still on his stomach, gesture furiously to the curtain. The fabric doesn’t move. “Damn it,” he hisses, voice still rough with sleep. Sam watches with a mixture of annoyance and confusion as his brother grunts softly, refocuses, and throws his hand at the window.

Still nothing.

Sam clears his throat. “Dean,” he starts, mustering up as much exasperation as possible this early in the morning, “what are you doing?”

Dean freezes, then groans. He drops his hand and rolls his face back into the pillow, grumbling into it. “Fuck.”

Realization dawns, and Sam frowns, pushing himself up on his elbows. “Were you—were you trying to close the curtains with your demon powers?”

His brother rolls over to shoot him a glare before turning his attention to the motel ceiling. “No, Sam, I was trying to use the force because I’m six.”

And that’s all the answer he needs, really. Sam considers him for a second before sighing and tossing off the covers. “Alright, Luke Skywalker.” He gets all the way to the bathroom before he realizes that Dean hasn’t corrected him to Obi-wan yet, so he pauses in the doorway and turns back. “Hey. It’s okay, you know? It happened to me, too. After I stopped…being able to do that.”

Dean doesn’t respond, so Sam hovers in the door for another few moments before stepping into the bathroom with a sigh. He’s just turned on the shower when—

“It’s Obi-wan, bitch,” Dean yells from across the room, loud enough to make it through the bathroom door. Sam smiles. 

He’ll be alright.
