i don't post here often enough and I have too many unread play scripts on my shelf. think it's time for a late new years resolution to

Read & review one play / week

(or. more like post my thoughts on it. idk we'll see how this goes)

i have a spreadsheet list of all my plays (because I'm a normal person) and I'll just random number generate and go from there. I'll update this like a master list with links to each post.

the plot thickens

with that big talk about audrey, i wanted to mention my redesign’s new ending which kinda ties into audrey’s big arc.

i know im not the first to think of this, but my project will have an “AU” theatrical ending where audrey is the one who rescues seymour from audrey ii- and is ultimately the one who destroys the plant once and for all. while i dont know the specifics of how it happens, seymour will give a first attempt to destroy the plant, and is about to be unsuccessful until audrey steps in at the last second to pull him to safety. i also dont know the specifics of how exactly they’ll kill audrey ii (i was thinking maybe burning it alive ?) but when that’s all said and done they’ll earn their happy ending together.

at first i considered making it a directors cut au- where audrey rescues seymour from the plant but he ends up dying from injuries and she’s the one to finish the plant off. whether or not she was successful in her endeavor wouldve been irrelevant because i came to the conclusion that audrey wanted to live happily with seymour. sure, it would’ve made for a heartbreaking tragedy, but the whole point of giving audrey her arc was to reward her for her independence- hence the happy ending. to punish her by having the love of her life die as a consequence of her making probably the biggest independent action shes ever done in her life– yeah thats not very cash money of me

some seymour headcanons

-i think the closest to his voice claim is hunter foster in the 2003 recording. the quality of his voice is really solid with just a PINCH of that nasally nerd sound lol. (i took some sample bits of talking and singing and pitched his voice down by like 3-4% and it was PERFECT to how i envisioned it)

-27 y/o, mixed/jewish enthicity.

-he has a stutter, which he’s very self conscious about. it comes out even more prominently when hes nervous- aka around mr. mushnik or orin. as much as he’d hope it goes away when he talks to audrey, it doesnt. he gets so flustered. but she doesnt mind it. she thinks its cute, and she loves hearing him talk. its hard for seymour to believe someone could like it. despite the stuttering in his daily life, it goes away when he talks to himself, [non-verbal] twoey, and when he sings.

-hardcore cat person. he feeds local strays all the time, even if he barely has enough money for himself. when he first gets baby twoey, he’s showing off the plant to all the strays (some wander into the shop’s basement). seymour accidentally drops twoey, shattering the pot. in a frenzy he scoops up the plant and sticks it into the first thing he could find- one of the empty tuna cans he had just used to feed the cats. after it seemed like the plant would be ok, he thanked the cats for helping him out. (this would replace the maxwell house coffee container up until twoey gets repotted in the handheld size)

-im gonna follow more of the musical route for his character, where he’s played less innocently and ‘grey’ than in the movie. (like how he intentionally misleads mushnik into looking into the plant to kill him rather than playing it off as a mistake.) i hope yall are ready for this baby boy to go completely off the shits unhinged cause thats gonna be a thing*

*i still havent worked out all of these specifics; i gotta be careful with this cause it could easily make him an unlikeable protagonist. but it would definitely making for interesting character exploration.

audrey ii ideas/headcanons

- i want baby audrey ii to be inspired by succulents. since im doing a redesign i want to keep it rooted in the 60s, but have a flair of more ‘contemporary’ touches here and there so i can help retell the story to a new audience. people love succulents rn, so im sure theyd totally be in the same boat as seymour when he decides to take the baby plant home

- in the budding stage, it has lil baby fangs. it still looks cute tho

- as it’s growing, it adapts its personality to be as appealing to seymour as possible so it doesnt get thrown out. since seymour is familiar with cats, audrey ii picked up on cat behavior when seymour’s around. it rubs itself against him, headbutts, etc. it most likely picked up on some dog behavior too, since it’s looking out into the street all day via the window. it can ‘wag’ its vines like a tail and wiggles when excited.

- im really leaning towards the idea of going as ham with the color palette as possible, to really make it feel otherworldly and alien. its markings change over time, so at every main stage (baby, budding, handheld, grounded, final) its palette will evolve into the next while remaining distinct than the stage before it. the colors make it wild and beautiful to look at, but it can also be interpreted as a poisonous animal’s markings that warn others about just how dangerous it is.

- going off of that, i want its patterns to also be able to VISIBLY move in real time. when audrey ii sings, its colors and patterns shift across its body in a psychedelic, hypnotizing way, similar to a cuddlefish

-whether the ‘hypnotizing’ effect is real or not can probably be left for the general viewer to decide, but i think its just an illusion. i still want seymour to be 100% responsible for his own actions rather than having his alibi be ‘i was hypnotized into doing it.’

Me too, I want to find my own name / So when someone calls / I can answer without hesitation / Yes that’s me, recognise that it’s me / Where is my place? Where am I? / Where could it be? / What am I able to do? / Me? What am I? / Who am I? / Where am I?
Here it is, this thing, shining brilliantly / The one I’ve been so anxiously looking for / What do you call it when it shines this brilliantly? / Radius / Radius / Radius, Radium / Radium, truly, it’s you / Radium, it’s really you / Radium, it’s me

I’ve found it. Atomic number 226, 10 pure grams, after 45 months. Success in extraction.
