They waited in perfect stillness for the camera flash to come. It always hurt their eyes, so they tried to avoid looking directly into the camera. It still blinded them momentarily, and they blinked away white sparks before Sarah went over to look at the picture they’d taken. She showed it to Alex, and they shared a smile.

“How should we tag it?” he asked her.

Sarah didn’t have to think long for an answer. “What about: ’#the space cadets are totally not vampires’?”

Alex laughed and reached over to clean the blood dripping from the corner of his mate’s mouth and sucked it off his finger. The leftover of their dinner came in handy for aesthetics.

Did it count as cosplaying if they were dressing up as themselves?

Blood thickly scented the room. It coated them completely. It was on their clothes, in their hair, on their skin; it always stuck to them after a hunt. Alone in the privacy of the place they had claimed as their current home, Sarah placed a delicate hand on Alex’s chest, pulling him closer. He gazed down at her alabaster skin. Her cheekbone shimmered slightly as it met the small fragment of sunlight that slanted through a crack in the window.

Even with blood glistening on their teeth and dripping onto the floor from their chins; each of them thought the other was extraordinarily beautiful. Sarah’s glassy fingernail gently traced over Alex’s lips before she licked the blood she had extracted off him from her finger.

When Sarah had first met Alex, a fragile human, she knew he would be the one to accompany her for eternity; and as soon as he allowed it she changed him. It added meaning to her existence. She was reminded of this every time they hunted as a team. Alex gazed at her, his eyes brimming with unshakable admiration. He loved her so much that he was prepared to sacrifice everything else in his life, everything he had ever worked for and dreamed of; to spend an eternity with her in his arms. Yet, as eager as he was to adapt to the secretive and nomadic lifestyle required by his newly founded vampirism, he still had much to learn. And Sarah, so grateful to have him as her companion, was even more willing to teach him the ways of the supernatural world.

“I want more, Sarah.” Alex’s voice sounded strained; the burn in his throat continued to ache.

“I know, but we need to feed sparingly.” Sarah cupped his cheek with her right hand and gave him a kiss. The blood on their faces smeared. “There are many rules in our world and it is my responsibility to teach you about them.”

“I don’t understand, I know the rules; don’t draw attention, don’t expose vampires to humanity. But we can find a way around the feeding-”

“You’re still thirsty. We’ll go up north and find another bite to eat, okay? The thirst will die down after the first year. However, never forget that there are no loopholes. I’ve told you about them. They’ll show no mercy - even if we expose our true nature by accident.”

Alex nodded. She was right. He couldn’t risk them being separated. Ever. “I’m sorry.”

Sarah offered Alex a reassuring smile and squeezed his hand. “You have nothing to apologise for. Now, we need to go. We can get there and back before tomorrow.”

They left the makeshift house and soared through the forest at vampire speed. The snow stuck to their boots. Hand in hand, the pair of lovers disappeared into the night in search of their next meal.
