Been rewatching OTH and I know you ship Brucas & so do I. Something that bugs me so so much is when people who ship Leyton say that Brooke & Lucas bonding in season 2 came out of nowhere, so his declaration of love for her at the end of the season, also comes out of nowhere. I always feel like my head is spinning trying to explain that Brucas friendship in season 2 isn’t out of the blue, what would you say to them? I always thought Brooke and Lucas did a way better job of actually showing build up where I feel like with Peyton & Lucas, the show was just always *telling* us “oh there’s something deep here between these two”
Definitely agree. OK so here’s the thing about season 2, it’s kind of a reset but it’s also not a reset at the same time. Meaning that until 2x09, Lucas doesn’t spend any time alone with either Peyton or Brooke because he’s not supposed to be leaning one way or the other, he’s starting over a new leaf so he’s usually with Brooke and Peyton together
or he’s with one of them with someone else
but the history of the triangle still lingers over the three of them
but I would argue the history of Brucas lingers more -- Peyton is still looking at Felix after Brooke told him off and Brooke glances at Lucas, you see the shift, and Lucas looks back
and when Peyton reveals that Lucas left a letter, she’s distraught and angry over what the letter could say:
“I’ve been carrying around the fact that he left without a word and you’ve been carrying around the words the whole time?”
and it’s made clear throughout the episodes that Brooke isn’t over the betrayal, yes,
but I would argue she’s also not over Lucas either
When Lucas and Brooke do have a conversation and begin their platonic connection in 2x09, I think it makes sense considering how they began talking in season 1 - Peyton was in trouble and they both ended up bonding while they were taking care of her and Lucas realized there was more depth to Brooke than he anticipated
While no one is in trouble in 2x09, Lucas is dealing with his heart condition and Dan’s lies about his health plus Anna gets drunk and then leaves the formal while Brooke found out about Mouth and Felix and the dollhouse so the night didn’t go according to plan for either of them and they end up finding each other
there’s even a callback
to a conversation they had in season 1
they then ended up talking all night and re-realizing that they did in fact have a connection
and Brooke coming to see Lucas the next morning to walk to school together
keeps in line with when she went to see him play basketball after they had their connection in 1x08
especially since she was never really over Lucas in the first place and then they just keep hanging out which is perfectly organic.

no but it’s literally lucas in front of brooke’s apartment saying to rachel with absolute certainty that brooke’s the one. rachel brings up peyton and not even for a single second does lucas waver in his conviction that brooke’s the one. and then it’s like, brooke is inside and she’s telling chris keller that lucas is the guy for her but brooke has been burnt before. he’s wanted someone else more than he wanted her and that broke her heart so she’s doing the non-exclusive dating thing because she doesn’t what she would do if she admits that he’s the guy for her but then he decides that she’s not the girl for him. and it’s like, watching the show we can do clearly see how much lucas loves brooke. we can see how sure he is. we can see that there’s nobody else, it’s only ever going to be her. but brooke doesn’t see that.
and to make literally everything about dair, it’s dair. it’s like, we see dan falling in love with blair for two seasons. we see how much she means to him. we see him turn down serena multiple times. we see the way that for him, it’s blair. it’s just her. she’s the only one he sees. she’s the only one he wants. but blair’s been burnt before too. she watched as her first boyfriend fell in love with serena. she saw nate want serena more than her. and so even though we can see how much she loves dan, she can’t say it. because she knows what it’s like for someone she loves to chose serena over her. and she saw dan love serena and a part of her won’t believe that he would ever chose her over serena. and it’s like watching the show we can see that dan only sees blair. that it hasn’t been serena for a long time. that he would never chose anybody over blair. but blair doesn’t see that.
and it’s just like watching blair&dan and lucas&brooke is kind of tragic because blair&brooke have experience the heartbreak of being a second choice and while we can see that dan&lucas wouldn’t chose anyone over blair&brooke, blair&brooke don’t see that.
YES! And I’m sorry but damn was still trying to get Blair back in season 6 and he didn’t seem that into Serena at all at the end, though Serena obviously really wanted him. Dan wanted Blair until the end.
Likewise, in the later seasons, Peyton really loved Lucas but Lucas was so only into Brooke. And Lucas and Brooke’s interactions in season 6 tell me that they were still in love.
