Everybody acts like each new Game Changer is a new level of betrayal and psychological torture from Sam towards his friends. Did we forget that the very first game changer was "Sam wheels out a strange machine and asks the contestants embarrassing personal questions, the veracity of their responses is judged by the Machine. The machine is actually controlled by the contestant's significant others who have been made accomplices. Forcing their loved ones into revealing shameful truths for internet broadcast." And sure, he's gotten a bit more personalized with these, constructing a variety of torture chambers for Brennan Lee Mulligan specifically, putting Grant O'Brien in various situations and then bringing his mother onto the set. But deception and betrayal were part of Game Changer from the beginning. So, when I hear people say "I can't believe Sam WENT THERE" about something all I can do is think to myself He went nowhere He's been there the whole time

my hadestown conspiracy theory: so the major turning point in the orpheus and eurydice myth is when orpheus sings a song so beautiful that the underworld stops to listen, right? and in hadestown, epic iii is that song

except

there is a song during which 'no hammers swing/no pickaxe ring', and it's not epic iii. it's if it's true

instead of the love song, instead of the personal appeal to hades himself, the turning point in hadestown is orpheus reaching out to the workers and helping them see that they are people too. persephone seeing this leads to her confronting hades, which leads to him confronting orpheus. if it's true is the moment where everything in the underworld truly changes.

Hadestown is the best take on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, because all over the internet I see people say, "You're not supposed to think of how he could have succeeded! That misses the total point of the story. Everyone was doomed and there was no way anything could have worked out alright. If you're imagining a scenario that didn't end in tragedy, you're just an arrogant fool. Just shut up and be sad about it"

But Hadestown says, "please please please think of how it could have been. Orpheus would have never looked back if he just had hope, please have hope, he would have wanted us to have hope. If you don't walk out of this theater thinking of how it could have been, we have failed you. go have hope, go see the world in the way it could be, so help us"

what does he mean by "rest easy"?? 's not like he's been up at night because he's afraid of juno. no, he's afraid something might happen to juno. he's been unable to sleep for fear of his lady love's safety, knowing that juno is following him right into the belly of the beast.

the only way to make sure that juno is safe is to make sure that he's "really gone." but the implications of that, and the knowledge of what he must to to ensure that juno stays well away from him, is what makes him stutter.

this section caught us all so off guard. partly because peter nureyev doesn't stutter. but that's because he has confidence in his ability to lie because almost no-one knows who he is — no-one except juno, of course. and now that he has to mislead juno, now that he has to make juno think he doesn't love him anymore, he's stuttering, because he's not confident he can lie about this. he's twisting the truth to make sure that he can even get the words out.

and what does it matter if he stutters when he says it? sure, peter nureyev doesn't stutter, but only juno really knows peter nureyev. well, juno did know peter nureyev. after this, no-one does. after this, juno's got no right to bother him. they never met.
