And  CHRIST  how Eli knew it, even now Nucky would reference mishaps between them during their youth, girls they’d fought over, the oldest brother ultimately winning leaving his younger sibling with the spoils... if there were any to gain.  His memory proved problematic in business, even for his own brother.  Talk of their father would have Eli conflicted;  he was cruel to the both of them in their youth, but he was their father.  But still Eli would laugh, a rare luxury when in the company of his brother these days, talk of business and deals would consume their meetings... the days of a casual brotherly conversations were long gone, if they were ever here to begin with, Eli had little for comparison aside from the chatter between his sons... they’re better off than he ever was at their age, that’s all he ever wanted.     “ Yeah well when you reach his age I bet you’ll be wantin’ someone to look after you... or for someone to take an interest, “     he’ll  BUY  someone’s interest, they both know he doesn’t have to worry about that,     “ –––Not that ya’ got long to wait you old son of a bitch. “     Another laugh came then, louder this time, one that caught the attention of a nearby child.  They smile, glad to see their father so happy again, even if only temporarily.

Must he use the same tactics he and June use to lure the truth from their children?  AGAIN?  Eli used them far more on her than his own kids, they were much more cooperative and well behaved than Sally...  christ.  A drink did sound favourable;  his mouth began to water at the suggestion of applying whiskey to a drying throat, but he would turn against his nature for tonight   ( until he returned home and sought out his own bottle of the good stuff beneath this kitchen sink )  and resolve the hell that seemed to trouble his companion.  Eli would sit there a moment, fingers tapping against the steering wheel as he stares at the leather, there is no answer to be read in the worn texture, he already has it.     “ Don’t change the subject. “     he looks to her now, his pointed glare aims to pierce her,     “ Just be fuckin’ honest with me.  Can you do that? “

The closed door behind them is for privacy mostly, but Eli feels more comfortable with a closed door between hre and vile whispered comments;  if he can’t hear them, his rage would lessen.  The comments aren’t going to stop, but it  IS  on Mickey... he got her involved, protecting her from hearing things he has no doubt she is already aware of is the best Eli can do.

It’s like being at home, he realises upon taking his seat beside the desk again;  school bag discarded without thought, shoes kicked off somewhere nearby... a sight he’d be met with when he made it home before his own kids returned from school.     “ What you doin’ your work so late for?  You gotta do it, just get it out the way... you got any to do now? “

–––says the vulture WITH  the job.     “ GOOD... just as long as you remember them. “     spoken as though a warning, Eli would glare at his brother a moment, brows raised before allowing the conversation to move on;  he stood in no want of an argument, not today.  Of course he’s  PROUD  of his brother for getting where he is today, and he’s sure their father is too   ( even if he never shows it ) , their mother... their sister, they’d be filled with such  GLEE  were they still around to see how popular Nucky is, how powerful... he practically has a piece of everything in town... and that is where their displeasure may stand.  A prestigious man in appearance, corrupt where it counts... what a thought from the brother glad to act on any command such a man would bark his way.  Does Nucky even consider the guilt his little brother feels?  DOUBTFUL.     “ Maybe––– we’ll try but... you know how he is. “     especially if he means to attend,     “ Guess I should have started earlier, it takes a whole fuckin’ year to get him to agree to come to these things. “     It was his attempt at humour, and if his brother missed it, then he might note his  ( poor )  jest in the smile he throws his way.
