The Nordic Satyr

@nordicsatyr / nordicsatyr.tumblr.com

I am the ever changing man that I am but my devotion to Dionysus has stayed firm. I mainly repost things but I will throw in original content when you least expect it. This is my devotional blog and I am a Hellenic Polytheist who is devoted to and bound to Dionysus. My devotion extends to Pan and Selene. And I honor many other gods, including, but not limited to Hermes, Hecate, Persephone, Hades, Hestia. I am open to questions, and discussion. Open content warning of a sexual and hedonistic nature.I have a fandom/geek/personal/hobby interests blog: @thebaroncain

A little note on me

I am not a historian. I have a high school education. Anything I know from a pagan standpoint, I have been self taught. If I see something on here, and I reblog it with an addition to it, I do not do so out of malice, but out of the desire to comingle and add to conversation. Basically out of a need to belong in this year long physical isolation, and many year spiritual isolation. If I don’t agree with something, I don’t reblog. If I step out of line, I will correct myself.

If I post something it is based off the resources I have at hand. Should not be held as gospel and at best, be treated as UPG. I tend to hear sources, double check them as best as I can, and generally trust where they are coming from.

I will do my best to not post misinformation. If I have led anyone astray, I deeply apologize.

I asked one of my (male) friends to stop using the phrase “man up” and he has been using “fortify” for the past two weeks instead and it’s just a little thing but honestly it makes a difference

and tbh it’s also pretty funny when I start to deflate in the library and he leans over and goes “FORTIFY”

Dude, fortify is bangin’. That makes things like you’re some kind of RPG character. Fortify is way better than “man up.”

Fun History Fact: The overwhelming majority of cowboys in the U.S. were Indigenous, Black, and/or Mexican persons. The omnipresent white cowboy is a Hollywood studio concoction meant to uphold the mythology of white masculinity.

Thank you.

I will always re-blog this

I think it was high school when i overheard some white girl put on her best semi-disgusted and confused voice and go “why do so many Mexicans dress up like cowboys?” and I had to be the person to tell her.

Why do you think the whites say buckero? Cause they couldn’t say vaquero.

I dunno if I reblogged this before but fuck it, y'all gon learn today.

Teach the children.

also, cowboy culture was hella gay. like, write-poems-about-your-cowboy-partner gay.

IF people acknowledge it, they play the necessity card– there weren’t any women out on the range, so they had to “resort to men.” this claim completely erases 1) the romantic (not just sexual) writings of actual cowboys, 2) the acknowledgement of cowboys’ potential homosexual activity by writers at the time, and 3) the possibility that some men would deliberately become cowboys with the intent to seek out homosexual encounters.

no one wants to admit it, but cowboy culture was just. so inherently gay.

Im here for the gay POC cowboys

Based on the myth of Dionysus being kidnapped by pirates (and getting owned by him)

On the myth Dionysus while being kidnapped the pirates were underestimating his nature itself as a god. Provoking him obviously results in him punishing them and transforming them as dolphins.

In my comic, I give a darker look at his power, especially when many people think that Dionysus has no power nor is he capable of fighting. In these images, it is emphasized, what extremes he can go to if he wants to, but he chooses to keep himself in check.

He has many more facets he's neither dark nor light. He lives in the between, neither good nor bad, he just is.

Dionysian Khernips Prayer

I'm popping in two prayers ahead of my Lenaia prep tonight: this one is a blessing of water to make khernips, and specifically asks Dionysos to bless the water. I don't believe khernips are necessary, but for me, it helps to get my mind into a state in which I feel prepared to worship :) The setup isn't super complicated: just a bowl, some water, optionally some salt, and a willingness to pray

[preferably done after a primary invocatory prayer to Dionysos, such as the Orphic Hymn to Dionysos]

Dionysos Hagios, pure and holy God, God who raised Semele from below to become Thyone, God who raised Ampelos to become His very blood, God who raised mortal Ariadne to become the immortal Bacchic Queen, I pray with this water I may briefly be raised as well.

Dionysos Iatros, healing God, May this water be clean like the tears You shed over those You love, May it be clean like clear springs on Your holy mountains, May it be clean like the showers that bring life to Your sacred plants, So that through it I may be cleansed and healed.

Dionysos Lysios, God who frees, Bless this water so it may wash away my aches and pains, Bless this water to imbue it with blessed divinity, Bless this water, and bless everything it touches. Evohe, my God, I praise You for what You have blessed!

it is crazy how “if this childrens show doesn’t kill their villain at the end it’s irredeemable media” became such a popular opinion here. like people were calling steven universe fascist apologia. and to be clear I don’t even think that would be the case for non childrens media, either. perhaps holding every single story up to the same standard of “does it follow the acceptable narrative path or is it evil propaganda” isn’t the most anti-fascist thing, either. maybe.

"you are morally obligated to murder your enemies" is also perhaps not the most anti-fascist thing

"The death penalty is the only true form of justice" is not actually something I think children should be taught.

— a prayer, tathève simonyan

[text ID: a prayer / i look up at God and see my ceiling staring back at me. / whimpered prayers leaving through the gates of my lips, ricocheting and landing right onto my eyes. / now everything i see is tainted with the colors of my pending longings. / a desire so raw you could still see the specks of blood gathering at seams. / a prayer … / a man on his knees in front of a woman, hands on her hips, holding the cathedral that was neither built nor can be destroyed / lips kissing the source of life / lips kissing the source of light / lips kissing / a   prayer! – a body to crawl into! (to grow into?) / a prayer! – a dead language we refuse to let go of, / a language of the dead that we refuse to let go of / a prayer! – Grandpa’s favorite tie, hanging from the bedroom door, decades after he passed / because my Grandma was the only one of us who knew what a prayer was / a prayer! – Grandma: “sitting with someone until they finish their meal is the purest sign of love” / a prayer! – i’ll sit with you till the very last sip, till the very last grain / a prayer! – a hymn to the Sun written by the coldest of hands / a prayer! – a mouth full of tongues that can never find the right language to weep in / Rage, that is love – rotten! / Rage, that is desire – rotten! / Rage! – like a prayer, unanswered, ricocheting from your ceiling and landing right onto your eyes, never quite reaching where it was meant to.]
