Overturning Roe v. Wade  poses a threat to the health and safety of LGBTQ young people. Here are a few reasons why reproductive healthcare rights matter to LGBTQ young people: 

🏥 Overturning Roe v. Wade allows states to further regulate essential health care and the already limited number of LGBTQ-competent providers across the country, posing a threat to the health and safety of LGBTQ young people.

🏳️‍🌈 In undermining the right to privacy, this Supreme Court decision could also jeopardize the rights afforded to LGBTQ people in the Obergefell and Lawrence decision — the freedom to marry who you love.

💔 Trevor Project polling found that nearly 70% of LGBTQ young people say efforts to restrict access to abortion often gave them stress or anxiety.

Our research scientists partnered with health economists at Cytel to publish a new peer-reviewed study today in JAMA Pediatrics that found the practice of conversion therapy on LGBTQ youth, and its associated harms, cost the United States an estimated $9.23 billion annually ‼️

Conversion therapy refers to a range of dangerous and discredited practices aimed at changing one’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

🛑 The study estimates that 508,892 LGBTQ youth in the U.S. were at risk of being subjected to conversion therapy last year 🛑

"Gender-affirming care models—which can include treatments that help align a person’s sex characteristics with their gender identity—are supported by all relevant major medical organizations, including the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association. Trans and gender expansive children cannot receive affirming medical treatment without their parent’s or guardian’s consent in the U.S. healthcare system, and an emerging body of research has found that affirming care models can result in young people having fewer mental health concerns."

“What I am concerned about is that something that is doing significant and documented harm to the health and well-being of LGBTQ youth is being seen as a highly effective political tactic and means of fundraising,” said Casey Pick, a senior fellow for advocacy and governmental affairs at the Trevor Project. “It scares me that LGBTQ youth are being sacrificed to a political process.”
