Make that make sense. People have to quit blaming the poor for being poor.

it’s literally sooo much more expensive to incarcerate people than it is to house and feed them. In my state it costs $90,000 to incarcerate a single person for one year. $90,000. Other states are even more expensive. for comparison, my rent is $1,050 a month. The annual cost of my housing is $12,600.

A word of advice for people advocating for criminal Justice reform to republicans and people who literally do not care about human rights: use these numbers. Republicans and conservatives and even moderate Dems don’t actually care about moral appeals of why it’s wrong to criminalize homelessness. They do however care about how much tax money this would cost to enforce. It makes financial sense to NOT incarcerate people. (Obviously it makes moral sense too, but most people don’t actually care about that)

It's so much more expensive to put people in jail. If they are in the custody of the state (jail or prison), they have to be given food, clothes, heating, and healthcare. Most of the people who are homeless have health problems--either problems that caused them to lose their homes, trauma from being on the street, substance abuse disorder, anything. The average person experiencing homelessness is much sicker than the average American.

At this point, the largest healthcare provider in the U.S. is the Department of Justice. And legally speaking, they have to provide care. (Granted, a lot of places will avoid that as much as possible, but ideally, they get what treatment they need.) There is a giant prison in Rochester, MN, because it's next to the Mayo Clinic. It's where people with rare and serious illnesses go. My old psych prof worked there part time, providing counseling. He saw people who committed horrendous crimes getting surgeries and chemo. To be clear, prisoners should be getting surgeries and chemo. They deserve healthcare. But it's jarring to hear that a murderer got a tumor taken off his lung while his victims' families have to pay out of pocket for therapy.

I also need to point out that if you're giving people housing, you're just giving them housing. Maybe you include heating, water, and electricity. You aren't giving them clothes (uniforms). You aren't paying guards. You aren't installing metal detectors and cameras. You are just giving them a place to live. That's obviously much, much cheaper than prison.

I am horrified that I have to resort to spelling this out, but yes, this is the only argument Republicans will listen to. Give them the cost-benefit analysis

It's a fantastic point, but John Boyega's net worth also puts him at $6 million. When he says eat the rich, he isn't safe either...

There’s a pretty big fucking difference between six million and one trillion lmao

Not to mention the way the money was made

An actor being paid for a role / doing some advertising is a world away form a man setting up a cooperate money machine that horrendously exploits workers

This is something I hate SO MUCH about how tumblr talks about money.

Like, I get that famous actors have large amounts of money, some of them are even probably overpaid (I have complicated thoughts about how actors are paid because of the nature of acting as a career), but they are exchanging labor for money, and their salaries are an expense involved in making a movie.

But like... an actor is paid for a job. They’re a worker like the rest of us. Bezos isn’t paid for a job, he’s paid for being the person who owns Amazon and despite being obscenely wealthy, he does all sorts of shitty things and to underpay and exploit his workers, and avoid paying taxes, so that more of the money Amazon generates will be profit (worker’s salaries are not profit, they’re a business expense).

These two mechanisms of acquiring money are fundamentally very different.

The reason why billionaires are evil aren’t because having money is bad, its because to get a billion dollars you have to cheat. You have to take it from someone else. If Bezos paid all his workers and suppliers fairly and treated them well, and paid his fair amount of taxes, and etc, then it literally wouldn’t matter how much money he earned, because he wouldn’t be doing anyone any harm. But its not actually possible to amass a billion dollars (a full order of magnitude bigger than a million) while behaving in an ethical manner.

Also wanna say that John Boyega specifically does a lot of proper grassroots good work and actively puts himself in a position where he knows the racists will keep on coming for him, to actively and materially help marginalised communities.

The fact a black man is never able to say a single word without being criticised is not being missed btw.

  1. some 8ish years now i reckon
  2. i have naturally acidic sweat. it's a family thing

we have already. They don't know exactly what is up with it, other than the sweat being slightly more acidic than normal and the acidic mantle being thicker and Way more acidic than normal, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with acidosis. As far as we have tested, our family has had this since at least my great grandpa, and the guy lived to be 93 years old.

What the fuck.

op is a xenomorph descendant from that one time ripley fucked the queen

Because in its younger days it used to have RGB lights:

Some of them still work, when they want:

Though I've long forgotten how to change the color settings

NEVERMIND I JUST REMEMBERED HOW

Imagine trying to claim op is wasteful for using a plastic keyboard after they show off something that looks like it belongs at Old Friends Senior Keyboard Sanctuary.

That's not even.. what's going on (re the last tweet). People with ocd aren't contemplating sexually abusing kids, they're afraid they might sexually harm a child by mistake, or be a pedophile without realising, or any number of similar anxieties, but the point is that it becomes an anxious fixation because the person finds it so repellant. It's such an incredibly common ocd symptom, but most people are understandably terrified to talk about it

I remember reading a study where a therapist was helping people with similar anxieties - though not involving children - work through them. One client said she was afraid she was going to murder the therapist, not that she wanted to but that she'd somehow lose control of herself or an accident would happen. The solution? The therapist brought a kitchen knife to an appointment (with the patients consent), handed it to her and basically said "okay, what now?" Turns out nothing now, nothing happened, and it helped the client deal with the phobia

Obviously that approach isn't workable with something like pedophilia/csa anxiety but I think it highlights the true nature of what the anxiety actually is. It's irrational anxiety that comes from a deep fear and disgust of csa, not a desire to perpetrate it

OCD-haver: “I have ridiculous irrational fear disease, it causes me to have ridiculous irrational fears”

Enlightened normal-brainer: “that is ridiculous and irrational, clearly you’re worried because it’s secretly true”

OCD-Haver: [tired stare at camera]

While accounts abound in Western media of Bolivia’s “neo-Andean” architecture, many are at a loss for words when trying to describe what seems to be reassuringly “pop,” and yet so far-removed from the modern canon. What is unanimous, however, is the surprise and sensory bedazzlement such buildings bring. What stands out most is that they simply stand out. This is what I focus on in my essay, in which I show that the core Aymara tenet of “abundance” can help us better understand how this hybrid architecture came to be. Through it, global consumer culture is integrated into the amplification and affirmation of an indigenous Aymara identity and, more broadly, of an Aymara cosmos. Such buildings therefore emerge as testaments to the recent economic, political, and spiritual flourishing of the country’s majority indigenous population.

Love the concept of a feather stuck up someone's nostril. Can you even imagine the utter desperation and itchiness from that one single fluffy feather? How the bristles gently torture every part of that poor unlucky nose, flowing and dancing with such a grace while bringing a nice velvet color to the needy appendage.

The feather itself knows that the sniffly nose is under it control and how enough playful teasing might set it free.

people who pinch their nose not to stifle their sneeze but to prevent their sneeze from exploding snot everywhere

like the sneeze is completely unstifled but they have to plug their nose otherwise snot is going to shoot out their nostrils

whatever is irritating their nose continues to make them sneeze because by plugging their nose, they prevent the irritant from escaping

they have to decide: sneeze one big messy snot rocket type sneeze and be done with it

or

pinch their nose shut to keep in clean but sneeze a lot more

Inconsequential, mid conversation, random sneezes. Two, three or [gasp oh god] four, a slight laugh, “whew, don’t know where that came from!”, and then it’s back to chatting, la-la-la. Nothing more to come of it. Maybe a light sniffle, brisk nose rub.  oh, mmm! The little 🔥 highlights of life!

when someone is laughing while sick so u can hear their snot bubbling as they snort with every laugh with the occasional actual bubble of snot

they try to play it off but their voice is congested and the bubbly snorting is very audible and obviously from a congested nose

they sniffle between laughing bc they have to breathe from their mouth
