“motherhood is my curse” Indie and Semi-Selective Written by Taylor

it was no secret to wendy that joanna felt she’d inherited some of their father’s darkness.    it stung to know that her sister, someone she looked up to, someone she aspired to be like since they were children, saw herself as nothing but a ticking time bomb.    did she really think she was a burden   ?   if that was the case, the brunette was going to do everything in her power to prove that it wasn’t true.    ❝     it’s ironic that you think that because honestly, jo  ?   you ARE my light.   i know you seem to think you’re this mona lisa painting, all filled with sadness   &   disrepair.  but, you’re not.   you’re my sister.   you’re the person i’ve wanted to be since i was five years old.    even when we weren’t talking, i would have given ANYTHING for us to just go back to normal.   ❞    damn it, joanna is wendy’s weakness.   it’s always been that way.   if she was scared, hurt, sad, wendy would have fought anything   &   everything to protect her.   she may have been the younger sister, but she felt a responsibility to joanna.    it takes a moment for wendy to encapsulate joanna in a tight embrace, her face hidden by joanna’s hair.    it feels good, being able to hug her sister   &   not be saying goodbye or hello after far too long.   ❝    you are nothing like our father.   ❞    words come out easy   &   without much thought.   if there’s anyone that joanna reminds her of, it is their mother    ——-     not the monster that ruined their lives.
image

"you are nothing like our father."

how long has joanna been WAITING to hear that ? how long has she been waiting, worrying, wondering how long it would take to mold her into the monster she felt destined to become. if it were anyone else, joanna would wonder how wendy knows that’s exactly what she’s worried about, but it isn’t anyone else. IT’S WENDY. she knows these things, especially, it seems, where joanna’s concerned.

❝ i hope someday i’ll believe that. ❞ her words are quiet, and her grip on her sister tightens ever so slightly, as if wendy can somehow prevent what joanna feels is inevitable. so much has shaken her lately. tarkoff, losing wendy, getting her back...ALL OF IT. everything she thought she knew is gradually fading away, and it has her feeling something she seldom does: fear

❝ i’m glad, for the record. ❞ a small smile, despite herself. ❝ THAT WE’RE US AGAIN. i don’t think i realized until you came back just how hard it was without you. all of it. you would have had every right to just...let the shifter kill me, but you didn’t. you came back. you helped. and i’m so grateful. ❞

lips smack together gently before she can process the odd turn of events.   had she expected this? no.    she could deal with a mandragora, she could deal with witch hunters, but a demogorgon  ?  what in the everloving hell was that  ?   ❝     so, you’re saying that just because you’re the beauchamps, you’re going to go up against some..   weird demon creature  ?   even though i don’t have a CURE, JUST IN CASE    smart.    ❞
JOANNA BEAUCHAMP.
Image

❝ it has NOTHING to do with ‘being the beauchamps’, alex, but this thing is dangerous, and it’s killing people. i might not know EXACTLY what it is, but i have to try and stop it. i’m better poised to do that than any MORTAL in this realm. ❞

joanna’s words rang true.   wendy did love deeply    &   maybe she expected to be loved the same in return.    but, over the years, wendy had come to know that true love didn’t really exist.   it wasn’t about who got the fairytale ending    &   who lived happily ever after.   it was just a lot of trial   &   error   &   making the best of what you both had.   it was about trying on the days you wanted to simply give up    ——     you just had to continue to love each other, no matter what.    ❝     yeah, yeah.   we can talk about my love life later.   it’s alex  ?!    i mean, she’s a bit..    stoic.   but, if she makes you happy, then i’m happy.    you really like her, don’t you  ?   wait, don’t answer that  !  !   i can read it all over your aura.    ❞    perhaps it was a little personal to be reading joanna’s aura right now, but the evidence was there   —–    she was multicolored.
Image

❝ STOP reading my aura, ❞ joanna protested, if only because she knew it would give everything away completely. she hated that she was so TRANSPARENT when it came to her personal life, and alex especially must have been lighting up her aura like a fireworks display. ❝ but yes, as i’m sure you can tell, I DO. she...i like who i am when i’m with her, wendy. it’s just...letting myself be that person that’s the problem. i REALLY don’t want to screw this up again. ❞

the way joanna spoke, made it seem like wendy was a fool for even thinking thatbut, what was she supposed to think   ?    with everything that had happened, the brunette had convinced herself that the only reason joanna had even given her a MOMENT of her time, was because she was valuable now.    when wendy stopped having value, people threw her away.   ❝  that’s not what i meant.   i mean..   i know you cared about me.   it just wouldn’t have hurt to pick up the phone.     ❞    a slight shoulder shrug is given, a light smile following.    ❝     but, it’s okay, jo.   that was over a hundred years ago.   we’re good now.   ❞
Image

❝ no. WE’RE NOT. not if you still think that. ❞ she knew her sister too well for that, knew that the lighter wendy’s smile, the darker her emotions. she hated that she ever made her felt that way, especially because her actions had less to do with hatred of her sister and much more to do with HATRED OF HERSELF. ❝ wendy, you don’t seem to understand that...it wasn’t about you. i mean it was but...only because if i didn’t make it about you, i would make it ABOUT ME. since the moment you were born, you have always been so vibrant and full of life. after the girls died that time, i just...i’d started to give up, started to wonder if somehow i wasn’t the curse. i couldn’t bear the thought of MY DARKNESS swallowing up your light. you were...you are the one thing i haven’t destroyed yet. if i live to see the day when i do, i don’t... ❞ her eyes cast to the ground. ❝ i don’t think i’d be able to LIVE with myself anymore. ❞

the more this woman spoke, the more confused roni became.   it wasn’t because she didn’t BELIEVE her, it was because what she was saying made so much damn sense.    was she going crazy  ?   probably.   as joanna caressed her cheek, the brunette found herself surprised.   no one had touched her so warmly in…    so long.   she hadn’t ALLOWED anyone that close, at least not in that way.    now, she knew what this woman’s intentions were.   she wanted to kiss her, to prove something   ——   was that really the smartest option   without words, roni nodded   &   kissed the woman in front of her, flashes of another life moving through her mind.   she’d seen herself, in those odd close, with much longer hair…    she was wearing a gown, fighting side by side with…   henry   ?    oh,   &   joanna was there, too.   what the hell            pulling back, she gasped slightly   &   lifted a hand to her lips, staring at the woman in front of her.   her eyes were as wide as saucers.    ❝     no..  no.   this isn’t happening.   uh uh.    ❞
image

gods, joanna had MISSED HER. funny, how even when believing she was someone else, she still felt the same, tasted the same. she felt the magic flow through her, knew regina must have at least remembered SOMETHING, so she was prepared for the dismay she saw before her. so the curse hadn’t broken, not completely, but she was at least aware. and that was A START.

❝ i’m sorry. i imagine you’re feeling confused and overwhelmed. but i promise, what you saw was REAL. ❞

Despite the centuries that separated them, apparently, Frederick was still a mama’s boy because the fight had started to leave him, his shoulders deflating at her simple touch. “…Things were different after you left, mother.” He began softly, gently–not wanting to break his mother’s heart yet again. “Tarkoff among them.”
Image

of course they were different. joanna expected nothing less, but right now, tarkoff was the only one who understood the PAIN she was feeling after losing victor. he was the only one who really could. so she let out a sigh and gave frederick her best ‘everything’s fine’ smile. ❝ i know. i would be more concerned to hear that things stay the same...but that’s enough DWELLING IN THE PAST for one day, don’t you think ? what do you want for dinner tonight ? i’ll make whatever you want.

❝ you think that’s how i see you ? as some sort of...GLORIFIED BABYSITTER ? ❞ joanna furrowed her brows. ❝ you don’t have to have a purpose for being here, wendy, you’re family. i know... i know i haven’t always SHOWN THAT, but i’ve never stopped loving you, not for a second, not even when i was FURIOUS with you. ❞
