BenCab Museum
July 10, 2016 — It was a rainy Sunday afternoon when I and my friends went to the home of the collection of Philippine National Artist Benedicto Reyes Cabrera, more popularly known as BenCab — the BenCab Museum. It is located along Km. 6 Asin Road, a half-hour travel time from Baguio city market via jeepney.
The well-known museum has three levels and houses eight galleries: BenCab Gallery, Cordillera Gallery, Philippine Contemporary Gallery 1 & 2, Maestro Gallery, Erotica Gallery, Print Gallery, Gallery Indigo, and Sepia Gallery. Nothing fell short of my expectations.
In Erotica Gallery you will find paintings, drawings, and sculptures highlighting an erotic theme.
The Cordillera Gallery contains the artist’s collection of indigenous tools and crafts of the mountain people. *featuring millenials at work*
PHILIPPINE LIFE: Hand-coloured engravings from The Illustrated London News of 1857 is currently on exhibit in Print Gallery, which usually displays vintage prints and photographs.
Another spot that really impressed me is the Bulol installation. The bulol, or Ifugao rice god, is a carved wooden figure made primarily as a guardian of a rice granary, and your BenCab Museum experience would not be complete without taking a picture with them.
After a tour of the galleries, you can spend some time at the Café Sabel located at the lowermost part of the building overlooking the forest and duck pond. We have only tasted iced caramel drink and camote fries, and they did not fail to satisfy. Pastas and some Pinoy meriendas, like turon and suman, are also served at the café.
The BenCab Museum is open from Tuesdays to Sundays 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM with an admission fee of Php120.00 for the general public.
