Who here has raised hornworms through pupation before? I know I’m supposed to keep the substrate (using eco earth) they’re pupating in at least somewhat damp but I truly have no idea HOW damp. Can’t seem to find a good answer online. If anyone has any tips please comment or IM me, thanks!

Hey there! My hornworm pupae actually just emerged into a lovely hawkmoth today. It's so hard to find good info online, so I'm happy to help if I'm able! I also used Eco Earth, and I made sure to keep it pretty moist (wet to the touch, but make sure not too soaked to where water will get on the pupae). After wetting the dirt, I dug a little hole / gap and placed the pupae in there so it was "cradled" so to speak. I had them on the surface of the substrate in my 10 gal, so I can properly monitor and make sure the substrate wasn't too wet / dry. It's best to check it every day. I just used bottle water, poured some in and let the substrate soak it up. After it's soaked up is when I moved the pupae back. Be careful moving them around, though, especially as it gets super squishy when they're close to emerging and you don't want to damage your moth!

Best of luck, and you're welcome to write me if you have additional questions. :-)

reminder that Gregor Samsa’s first thought to his kafkaesque metamorphosis was “aw shit I still have to go to work”

I’m sorry did you just refer to the metamorphosis in the book Metamorphosis written by Franz Kafka as “Kafkaesque”
