How about the winner get a kiss from the loser? Do you wanna end up in a coma? You can drain my energy any time, chère. Gambit has plenty.

One of the many things that Leverage does really well is the principle of Giving It A Face. It's a bit of storytelling advice I've heard before that if you want the same emotional impact across of saying "six million people lost their homes and families" you're more effective writing a scene where a lost kid stands in a ruined house crying for their parents, because then it has A Face. Almost every episode of Leverage does this; takes a systematic act of horror like for example the way the US military chews up vulnerable people, traumatise and permanently injures them, then throws them back into an even worse situation than they started from, and they focus on just one person. Give the issue a face, a family, loved ones and the kind of stakes you can hold in your hands. And once you understand it on a visceral level they pull back into act 3 and show you that this same exact horror is repeated a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand times over. And then they get their fucking vengeance. It's so effective and very, very well done and never loses its impact. My favourite is in the boiler room job with the final reveal but honestly it's a feature of basically every episode to some extent and its SO good

*grabbing mlm shippers by the shoulders* guys nobody needs to be the twink. nobody needs to be the sub. nobody needs to be the femboy. they can both be big fat hairy men who bask in each others masculinity or they can both be unspeakable monstrous creatures with inhuman genitalia it’s okay I’m holding your hand. Let me show you the way

Hey, take it from someone creeping towards 40:

Ignore the fun police.

If you like it, order your steak well done. Get your bagel toasted with jam and butter. Put ice in your scotch and ketchup on your hotdog. Get red wine with fish and white with steak. Who cares?

If you want to, listen to pop music. Watch blockbuster popcorn flicks. Read dime store novels. Enjoy them.

Dye your hair or cut it off. Paint your fingernails blue. Wear whatever the fuck you want on your own time (ie, when not at a job or school or whatever where you can get penalized for breaking rules) as long as you aren’t like welding or shoveling snow.

Anyone who tries to tell you you’re wrong? Say “okay” and go back to what you were doing. You’re not hurting them by enjoying yourself or having things the way you like them.

There are no caveats or addendums to this. No “but what about x?” Nah. You’re allowed the things you like. You don’t have to justify your taste or apologize for it if it’s not hurting anyone.

And likewise, let other people live their lives. We’re all dead in the long run, so tend your own garden before you become fertilizer in it.

If you like Science, use ao3 (writer, reader, both, some nebulous other usage I have yet to figure out) and enjoy sharing your opinions on fanfic and fandom, I'd be hugely grateful to anyone willing to take part in a short survey!

It's anonymous (you can use whatever name you like) and the answers will be used for my paper on fan archives, fandom, and how fans relate to the two. The survey will stay open for a week starting today.

If you want to take part, click here!

Good sci-fi is almost like religion in that it raises way more questions than it will ever answer and leaves you chewing on drywall. And that's the good part. Good sci-fi is just philosophy for weird people

Maybe the real "star trek" was the questions we didn't answer along the way

This looks so much like a "normal" Tumblr ad, I almost scrolled past it until my brain registered the Aperture logo. Then I had to scroll back up to it to reblog.

Given the kind of surgery Cave Johnson offered to his ‘volunteers’ if they wanted to make an extra $60, I can in fact believe that they would do this.

"CAVE JOHNSON HERE! Now, we're looking for some ladies that don't" *checks notes* "want to be ladies for an experiment. So if you want a little cut off the top, follow the multi-colored line on the floor. Now some of you may be wondering why I sound so enthusiastic about such a thing and let me tell you: the more men here the better the testing! And I don't care if you were always a man or we MADE you one!"

"What do you mean I can't say that? I'm the one in charge here I can say whatever I want! YOU'RE FIRED!"

"Not you future man, you're doing fine. Though there is a new opening on my staff if you're interested."

As far as I'm concerned Chilchuck Dunmeshi is the only really good usage of the "looks like a kid but is actually an adult" trope in anime. On the outside he looks like a Charles Dickens orphan asking for gruel but on the inside he's a middle-aged divorced father of three who runs a union, smokes, and drinks like a fish
