Musician Spotlight: Rebecca Clarke

(Every month, Musicians Against Elitism will feature one lesser-known composer belonging to a minority demographic. If you have any ideas, please feel free to send them over! For further reading, here’s the rest of our Musician Spotlight series.)

Rebecca Clarke was a British composer and violist, as well as one of the first female musicians to play for a professional orchestra. Though most of her compositions were never published, she is only now being recognized as one of the most skilled composers of her time period.

I though she was holding a gun for a second there

You’ve heard of naming your instruments, now get ready for...

…naming your caprices

tag yourself i’m unknown

It’s Mambo number six

IM CAPRICE 7

@robertschumann-official Yeah they are named after the composers, I can’t remember who George was (not @georg-fred-handel-official though) and Krzysztof is Penderecki, and Franz was @franzschubert-official Each caprice used an idea from a famous viola piece and then named after the composer, so Rebecca Clarke sonata, Walton viola concerto, etc. etc.

Oh wow, I'm the first one, that's so lovely I'm honoured! 💛

My lovely best friend!

10/10 would recommend wearing grapes and leaves as a hat

I’d try that but I might not be able to pull that off as well as you do :)

You look lovely @fannyhensel-official, you pull off that headwear fabulously! 💛

Let’s face it, she could probably wear a literal trash bag and make it look fabulous :)

^you’re not wrong, she’s beautiful and could pull of anything 💛

Serious musician talk time.

If I were to start a blog detailing the sexism women face in the classical music industry, who would follow or contribute to it? My idea is to begin by posting quotes and examples from the first three and a half years of my undergraduate degree, and then document every instance I experience in the last five weeks before I complete my degree. Much like this blog, women (and anyone who doesn’t identify as a man, really) would be invited to submit stories or quotes about the sexism they have dealt with in their education and careers. I feel like this is something that’s been shoved under the rug for too long, and I feel obligated to draw attention to it. Who supports my idea?

You thinks its over since my time? Think again! Women in music still struggle!

People still act like the music community is some kind of discrimination-free safe haven, when in reality it’s anything but. Thanks so much for raising awareness for this!!

Sexism is such a problem in the music industry, my struggle with people’s perceptions of women and sexism in music was relatively recent, I actually made a post about some of the struggles I faced in my life @thingsmymusicprofessorssay @sexism-on-stage
