Truly blessed to be alive at the same time as Simone Biles. Just learned she’s EIGHT YEARS past the average female gymnast retirement age and she is still improving and winning against much younger athletes + she’s likely preparing to compete in another Olympic Games in 2024.

A male gymnast could never achieve Simone Biles’ feats, they simply aren’t built for it. I appreciate how gymnastics is uniquely sexed because it shows women can dominate in feats of strength and physicality if the movements are designed to play to their physiological strengths.

But I really can’t stress enough how important her story is to young girls interested in athletics. Sports were so important to me growing up, but female athletes reach a point where they can no longer ignore that the boys are drawing bigger crowds, they are drawing more attention, they get the nicer locker rooms, nicer fields, nicer training facilities. You grow up and you realize there’s no place for you at the professional level, but there’s plenty of million dollar opportunities for the males. You realize the furthest you can go is college and that level of play for women only exists because title IX demanded it. You start to question yourself and your purpose. It often feels like the rest of the world is screaming at you that women’s sports are boring and nobody cares. You understand that men have a brute strength advantage that you can never overcome no matter how hard you train. People often insinuate this means women’s sports have no value, why would anyone want to watch the weaker sex compete? And it’s heartbreaking, because you didn’t ask for this female body with higher body fat percentages and lower muscle-building capacity to support the reproductive system, you’re just a kid who wants to play her favorite game. Your body feels like a curse. But Simone Biles tells a different story. What if athletics were appealing not solely because of the strength involved? What if factors such as flexibility, endurance, and balance were emphasized more? These too are athletic qualities!! These too are exciting to watch and difficult to master!! She changes the narrative that is subtly but pervasively shoved down our throats that sports=strength. Her technical skill is almost unfathomable and I could really go on all day about all the boundaries she’s broken in sports and how important her presence in sports media is. In summation: thank you for truly being the greatest of all time 🐐 SIMONE BILES.

Great news for uninsured adults in the USA who want a COVID-19 booster! It now appears that ALL CVS locations are now active participants in the Bridge Access Program. The Bridge Access Program gives out free Covid-19 vaccinations to 18+ adults who otherwise can't afford one, so if you have a CVS near you, please go get one! For others who don't have a CVS near them, please go to vaccines.gov, click on "Find Covid-19 vaccines", fill out which vaccines you prefer (you can mix different vaccines if you have to so i reccomend just marking all of them for the age groups you need), and when the next page loads mark the "Bridge Access Program Participant" option to see only locations that are Bridge Access Program participants. Hopefully, other places that aren't CVS will start participating soon, so just check back every so often to see if there are any updates. The CDC Bridge Access Program website also has more details on what locations will be participating, but only CVS is appearing as an active participant on the vaccines.gov location finder at the moment.

For anyone who doesn't know: there is currently a NEW BOOSTER available, designed to counter the XBB variant (which is circulating big time currently). So this is not only topping up your existing immunity but adapting it, much like the bivalents did for Omicron and the flu shot does every year.

North American Total Solar Eclipse, 8 April 2024

This is your friendly heads-up that if you want to travel to see the total solar eclipse coming up in the spring, now* is a good time to start making your arrangements!

This one will be visible as at least a partial eclipse to most of North America, with the path of totality cutting a diagonal from Sinaloa, Mexico to Newfoundland, Canada, including 15 US states from Texas to Maine.

Although we just had one a few years ago in 2017, we won't have another solar eclipse visible in the continental US until 2045--and the path of totality for the 2024 one is within driving distance for a much larger proportion of the US population than either 2017 or 2045. The Northeastern US won't see another until the 2070's.

For millions of people, including me, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see a total solar eclipse without getting on a plane. Hotels in major cities along the path of totality are already starting to fill up.

Last time, in 2017, I was able to see the partial eclipse from where I live, but it wasn't feasible to travel to see the totality. I heard from people who did see the totality that it's really quite something, so I decided back then that I was going to go to this one. (The one in 2079 might be a bit closer to where I currently live, but I'll be 101 by then, so I figure I'd better not wait.)

Erie, PA is the closest place for me to see it, and I figured I'd camp. I started looking into it last night, and pickings are pretty slim already. I lucked into a camping cottage at a park 20 minutes' drive outside the path of totality--I think someone must've cancelled recently, for me to get it, because out 87 spots, all they had left was 9 tent/trailer sites, and the one cottage.

So anyway, if you want to go, it's an overnight trip for you, and you don't want to end up sleeping in your car at a rest area, now's* the time!

(*Actually several months ago would have been the best time, but the second-best time is now.)

HURRICANE ADVICE FROM A FLORIDIAN!

Make sure you've got shelf-stable food and water for everyone in the house, including pets. The rule of thumb is a gallon per person per day. Freeze water bottles if you want cold water.

Make sure you have enough meds!

Make sure you have batteries, candles, flashlights, and a manual can opener. 

Make sure your electronics, including backup batteries, are charged. Unplug things you don't want fried in case of a power surge. 

Don't tape your windows, it doesn't help and you'll just be stuck scrubbing goo off of them later.

Put a mug of frozen water in it in your freezer with a quarter on top of it. If your freezer defrosts, the ice will melt and the quarter will sink and tell you you need to throw things out.

Get everything that's not nailed to a foundation out of your yard. That dead branch hanging on by a thread? Time to get it down (it was probably time to do that three days ago, but now’s better than never).

Park away from powerlines and trees if you can. Rain makes the ground soft and then trees fall over.

Have an evacuation plan to a shelter. Evacuate if they’re telling you to.

If you start to flood, don't go in your attic. You'll get trapped if the water rises too high and you can't hack through your roof. This happened to a lot of people in Texas and Louisiana. Get ON the roof.
