Chapter 53

Slowly the image became clearer again. Ava blinked irritably into the bright light that surrounded her. Her head was pounding loudly in her ears – it was painful. Something damp was sticking to the back of her head and she tried to bring her hand to the sticky spot. Startled, she found that she could not move her hands. All at once her field of vision came back into focus, her eyes widening in fear. She was tied to a wooden chair and her first guess was that she was in one of the warehouses.

The ceiling above her was several metres high and the glare of the LED lights from the ceiling caused pain in her eyes. Desperately, Ava yanked at her handcuffs – to no avail. The cable ties that secured her wrists to the armrests of the chair cut painfully into her flesh.

“Ah,” a voice sounded behind her and Ava tried in vain to catch a glimpse of the person speaking, “Our guest of honour is awake.”

Ava heard footsteps coming towards her from behind. Her heart began to beat faster. How would she get out of here? Hastily, her eyes searched the room and got stuck on two dangerous-looking dudes standing in front of a door a little way from her. She would never get past them. Besides, there was the problem of the cable ties.

“I see our Persephone has arrived. Now it’s only a matter of time before her noble knight shows up to rescue her from the clutches of the evil Hades.” Loki made his appearance and bent down to Ava.

James’s POV

James had been restless all night. Natasha might have wanted to jump down his throat a couple of times when he only half-heartedly participated in her briefing on the case. Natasha had brought James up to speed on what IT had been able to find out – which wasn’t much. They knew Loki was behind the art forgeries. But their captain insisted that the why should be found out first before they were to arrest Loki. For James, that meant continuing to work undercover for Loki.

He hated it. Every time he looked at Loki, he had to think about what that bastard had done to Ava. All the time he was working, his thoughts circled around Ava – around her safety, around her stubbornness. He was worried.

Last night, too, he had had to think about Ava again and again. It had been indescribable to be physically and emotionally connected to her again. It still took his breath away what just the smallest of Ava’s touches triggered in him. Natasha showed no understanding of him, nor did she inquire further about what had happened between him and Ava that night. She would certainly prefer to hear it from Ava. And what would Ava tell Natasha?

James couldn’t take it any longer. He had to talk to Ava again, hear her voice, talk about last night. It was unbearable not to fall asleep every night with Ava in his arms. She was everything to him and returning to his empty flat every night brought him physical pain. Nervously, he dialled her number, fervently hoping she would give him a chance to explain himself.

“Ava?” James’ voice seemed to reach Ava from a great distance. It sounded like he was miles away, but the next moment she could feel his hand on her arm. He pulled her close and held her tightly in his arms. A sob tore from her throat and Ava felt tears running down her cheeks. This was the last piece of the puzzle she was missing. Suddenly it all made sense.

Loki had indeed broken into her flat so many weeks ago. He had found her, even though she was sure he wouldn’t find her in a city of millions. She had been so sure that New York had been the perfect retreat, the perfect refuge from Loki. She had been wrong. All at once she also understood why Natasha and James had been so keen to protect her. The two of them had known all along that Loki was behind the business with the vans and the warehouses. That was why the taskforce was called in.

Ava knew Loki was a dangerous man and that he would put up with a lot to get revenge on Ava. What she didn’t understand was why Loki had started art dealing. What did he get out of it?

The Midnight Coconuts

Summary: Bucky and his girl take a trip to the grocery store. Several things are involved, including coconuts, a 25cent gum-ball machine, Avengers branded Jell-O, chocolate milk straight from the jug, and tampons.  Characters: Bucky x Reader Words: 3k Warnings: Some swearing. Insane levels of fluff. Dangerously adorable Bucky. One (1) random reference to Not Another Teen Movie. 

A/N: Listen, I will never be over silly domestic Bucky! I originally started this story before TFATWS came out and when I imagined Sam had a niece, so just go with it. Part of me wrote this, because I needed to convince myself that I love grocery shopping (one can only eat takeaway and Trader Joe’s Orange Chicken for so long) and the other part wrote this because I firmly believe domestic routines can be the most romantic adventures out there.

When the doors to the grocery store whoosh open with a gust of stale manufactured air, Bucky skids to an abrupt and dramatic stop.  

“WAIT!”

Behind him, you stumble in panic, fumbling with an armful of reusable grocery bags. Instantly you’re imagining spilled blood and stab wounds and clean ups on aisle three and god dammit, how can there be a problem? This is a grocery store at midnight on a Wednesday. Shouldn’t the forces of evil be sleeping? Why is it so impossible to get a day off work? Don’t they know you need rest? And peanut butter? And that you’re dangerously low on toilet paper?

The forces of evil are the worst.

Raising weary fists, you huff.

“What? Where is it?”

Bucky sidesteps toward a row of small red and green machines beside the entrance, falling to his knees and smushing his nose eagerly against the glass. Reaching a hand behind him, there are several impatient grabby motions, before he glances back.

“Babe, can you give me a quarter? I need a gum-ball.”

In a dystopian universe, individuals cannot experience color until they meet their soulmate. Black and white is solely what familiarizes them. A burst of color explodes the world around them when facing their kindred spirit. Their soul, mind, body, and spirit are finally intact. As if they were reborn. Kismet, one would say. Though, for her, it is serendipity—a fortunate accident. She was certain that she had met the one, although she was not able to see color with him. She completed him, as he completed her.

Steve lost everything in his life; a chance of love, happiness, and individuality. Entering a coma of 70 years destroyed him. He leaned on a person to revive him. Her.

Seeing color was insignificant to them, prone to their black and white world around them. Colors did not justify the intense emotion felt for one another. They knew they were soulmates, no matter the vivid colors they dreamt of seeing. Until Bucky, the best friend enters the subject. The moment he and her lock gazes, chromatic colors appear before them. They welcome the beauty of the blues, reds, purples, and greens. Overwhelming it was, enough to give them a headache. Similar to the circumstance.
