Few bands can claim a place in five different musical histories - hip hop, new wave, house music, funk & punk. ESG, here captured at Tier 3, NYC in 1980, definitely hold such a unique place.

“When Mrs Scroggins bought her teenage daughters – Renee, Valerie, Deborah and Marie – musical instruments in the mid-’70s, all she was doing was trying to keep them off the streets of the South Bronx. She had no idea she’d just created one of the most exciting and influential bands to come out of the music scene of ’80s New York. ESG -short for Emerald, Sapphire and Gold- distilled the black and Hispanic sounds of the city into a tight, stripped-down new genre that some people called ‘punk-funk’.”

The sisters, after the addition of their friend Tito on percussion, the band started taking part in talent shows in 1978, supported The Clash & Grandmaster Flash, played at NYC’s hottest venues, like Danceteria or Paradise Garage and ended up in Manchester, where they played the opening night of the fabled Hacienda after signing with Tony Wilson’s Factory Records, who caught them performing at Hurrah in the Upper West Side of Manhattan in 1981.

Their debut EP under the same name was recorded 3 days after they flew over from NY, produced by the legendary Mancunian producer Martin Hannett (whose portfolio included Joy Division, the Durutti Column, Magazine, John Cooper Clarke, New Order, OMD & Happy Mondays). Hannett had three minutes left on the master tape, so he had the band record “UFO”, which eventually became one of the most sampled songs in hip-hop history, since it has been sampled over 500 times by just about every hip hop producer going.

Parveen Shaikh, the principal of Somaiya School in Mumbai, has been fired for liking a pro-Palestine post on social media.
The management on Tuesday expelled Ms. Shaikh, after OpIndia, a Hindutva website, infamous for spreading misinformation and hate, published a report vilifying her for political views on Social media.
A report claiming to expose Shaikh’s “disturbing social media behaviour” was brought out by OpIndia on April 24. Based on tweets she had “liked,” it described her as a “Hamas sympathiser,” “anti-Hindu,” and a supporter of “Islamist Umar Khalid.”
Since then, the journal and its editor have been urging Shaikh’s removal on a frequent basis on the internet, claiming that her political beliefs are harmful to the “thousands of unsuspecting children” that she is responsible for caring for as an educator. On Twitter, this has also triggered a hate campaign against Ms. Shaikh.
Following the campaign, Shaikh was asked by the school management to resign on April 26, but then she had no intention to do so. Emphasising her freedom of speech in a democracy, Shaikh refused to resign, citing her true commitment to the school’s development in the past. The management then sought a written explanation from Shaikh on May 4.
In a statement issued Tuesday evening, Somaiya Vidyavihar, which runs the school, stated, “Recently, it has come to our attention that the personal social media activities of Ms Parveen Shaikh, who holds a leadership position at The Somaiya School, have been starkly misaligned with the values we cherish… We strongly support the right to freedom of expression, yet we recognize that it is not absolute and must be exercised with responsibility and respect for others… Given the gravity of concerns, and after careful consideration, the management has discontinued Ms. Parveen Shaikh’s association with Somaiya Vidyavihar to ensure that our ethos of unity and inclusivity is not compromised…”

I don't know how is it possible for an online website, a fucking online site with no credibility to have a woman sacked. A principal at that, which means this woman had a entire life during which she taught. The censure of Muslim citizens in India by rabid editors like these, can only happen because it is allowed by every single structure there is. Somiya Vidyavihar, the university (?) which runs the school thought to uphold Hindutva and so just because of a campaign, they sacked her.

as an Indian who moved to the U.S. as an adult for the first time 2 yrs ago and has lived in connecticut for all that time I WILL be a patriot idgaf I simply do not understand the connecticut bashing....I don't even understand the new jersey bashing I am sorry to say....very convenient to reduce connecticut to rich white new york day time commuters who have estates in Lyme when this is a diverse working class state that is struggling with some of the worst wealth and income inequalites and underfunded public systems out there....!!! buses were free during covid and ct organizers made it so that free buses extended through winter and my first semester here I was just hopping on free ct buses, which are always warm when it's so cold outside .... ppl are friendly and even when they're not they will help you out if they see you in trouble.... the tree cover is fantastic... fuck CT bashers.
