u dropped this travis 👑

never forget that it was travis dermott, a player making league min on a one year contract w one of the worst teams in league history, not a star, not a face of the league, not a generational talent. it was travis dermott who did what needed to be done, stood up for what he believed in, and showed for the world to see how weak of a league the nhl is. he saw that something was wrong and he put a stop to it at great risk to his own future.

never fucking forget.

appreciate beloved former minnesota wild leadership and current arizona coyotes player matt dumba for refusing to let the league off the hook about this. he absolutely read them for filth, and he’s long been an outspoken voice in the conversation around the way the league fails and harms anyone who isn’t a rich cishet white boy. co-founder of the hockey diversity alliance and prominent player of colour, he’s got a lot to say about the ways the nhl never meant for hockey to be for everyone.

anyways. i was proud to have him on the wild and i hope arizona knows what a gem they have in him. we need more guys to stand up like this, and to keep pushing back even though the tape ban was reversed.

On the one hand I would prefer a functional government, but on the other, the sheer comedy and Schadenfreude of the House Republicans descending into petty, humiliating chaos while the Dem folks are showing up with literal popcorn and chanting for their own Speaker nominee like this is a high school sports game is filling me with manic glee.

This is the current state of American politics

My gf and I are going to Texas next week and honestly, I’m scared. We’re fairly visibly queer and she’s a trans woman, and with the misinformation about the uvalde shooter and Texas being Texas, I’m really nervous.

We’re going for an armored combat tournament, and I know the people we’ll be fighting with/spending most of our time with will be safe people, but everywhere else?

Getting to that point in my relationship where I’m trying to brainstorm how I can commission a proposal sword from my girlfriend without her realizing I’m the one commissioning, while also getting her input on the sword 😅

There is a distinct technique used by capitalists to bypass the legal and contractual rights of workers which to my knowledge has no name currently - so I’m giving it one - Lunch Grinding.

Lunch Grinding is a manipulative erosion of worker rights both in and out of the workplace. It bypasses legal and contractual standards through informal social pressures which the bosses cannot be held directly accountable for.

Lunch Grinding is named after one of the most common examples. It begins by asking a few employees to skip lunch in order to finish a project. Workers who are already insecure about their position due to economic anxiety will see this as an opportunity to prove they are a good employee. Those who refuse to do so may receive blame for failing to finish the project on time.

The issue becomes compounded when the bosses begin to purposefully schedule less time to complete the same projects. A distinct class begins to appear ignoring their contractual right to a lunch break - who become hostile to those who refuse to work during lunch for being “lazy” or “the reason we didn’t finish on time.”

At this point the management no longer needs to influence anyone directly to work through lunch break, simply by keeping up the sense of constantly being a little late for the project they have ensured the lunch-grinders will apply pressure to their peers who aren’t working through breaks.

As workplace hostility increases towards the “unproductive” members who are expressing their formal right to a break - they will be replaced with new individuals who may not even realize they have the right to a lunch break because working through the hour has become normalized by their peers.

Thus formal written standards from contracts and legal code become functionally non-existent. After which a new standard will be identified by management for erosion some examples include:

+Accepting uncertain hours. +Working off-the-clock. +Staying “On-Call” at all times. +Finishing projects / responding to emails at home. +Never using time off or sick leave.

All of which are socially conditioned in the same format - starting with “The Good Worker” who does a little favor for their boss - and ending as a peer enforced pressure and a perpetual hostility from management claiming productivity isn’t as high as expected.

This old post of mine feels increasingly relevant with the popular protest of worker’s mistreatment happening in the USA of late.

I am in TOTAL support of the film, television, and theatrical stage crew going on strike, and you should be, too. No form of art is worth unsafe and unfair working conditions. Crew deserve all the respect in the world. I don't want to hear one fucking word from anyone complaining about delayed productions or interruptions to your comfort shows and films. Your entertainment is not worth someone's life or livelihood! Support your unions, your crew, and the people who work hard to make the shows and films and plays you create all your Tumblr content for. Your faves would be nothing without the crew!

I believe the disruption will be worth it. For these people, this is a very vital strike. I am hoping that a few days or hours after the strike starts that the networks will crumple and make the necessary deal. Three days at best.

also it's important to note that strike authorization doesn't mean a strike will happen - it's an extra card in the hand of union negotiators. if the strike authorization passes, then they can declare a strike, but they don't have to. it just increases the intensity of the threat that they will, and puts additional pressure on management to capitulate.

Also highly recommend looking at the ia_stories page on Instagram. There are hundreds of testimonials from workers in film that make it very clear why they need as much support as possible.

Just realized that to get the vaccine I’m gonna need to show my ID AND proof I work in food service from my employer, but like, none of my work documents use my legal name... and I don’t have a permanent manager rn to write me an attestation letter, and I don’t want the temp manager to know my legal name if I can avoid it 😑😑😑

My brilliant gf told me my paystubs will have my legal name on them and like, I don’t get actual pay stubs, but i found a digital pay record with it so 💃💃 gonna get that vaccine this weekend 💃💃
