Years ago my sister told me abt how she used to play online survival games like Rust or something etc. w her friends and she'd go in VC this over-the-top 'girly' voice like "ummm hey I don't play videogames much and I reeeaaallly don't know what's going on teehee, can anyone pleaaase come help me I'm so confused" and then when some guy showed up all of her friends would swarm and kill

Okay so like

My friend and I like the same guy

But I’m not jealous?

Like, usually I get hella jealous of anyone my brain perceives to be a “threat” if I like someone (“threat” being the best word I can think of for a not great instinct)

But like, rn I’m just

Not??

Even tho they’d likely have a better chance than me

Either this is character development or this guy is special

Even tho I have absolutely no idea whether he feels the same way lmao

Me, trying to joke around with my maybe-crush: don’t worry, you may have teased my accent, but at least you haven’t made me cry like I did yesterday haha

My crush, as well as the other people in the vc: …you okay? What happened? Who made you cry? Who do I have to beat up?

Me: …ah shit, didn’t anticipate that.

It's so hard to come to that conclusion though, like at this point unalive is a part of gen Z culture. It's just using a word, they're not even thinking about talking on TikTok or YouTube anymore, they're just talking. It's a lot like people getting mad over AAVE because it's not grammatically correct and yes it's not, but AAVE is a cultural usage of English, a dialect if you will. They use it because their friends and family use it, everyone talks that way. Nobody thinks about grammar when speaking AAVE. It's actually kind of offensive if you try to correct someone. It's like that with unalive too. It's a clashing of culture, we don't understand it because we see it as it was formed, a response to a shitty half ass language filter, not as it is used, which is just another word for kill, death, or died. I really think this one is just not a big deal enough to fight. I think that teacher in the first part, while I agree with the sentiment and find the story funny, it's also in my opinion not about maturity but just a culture thing.

From working with children, the way kids who use unalive react when they hear someone say kill or suicide, it's not just slang or comparable to minoritised dialects, it's self-censorship, active and deliberate with fear of consequences built into it.

sometimes you need to give up committing to the bit when someone genuinely can’t tell if it’s a bit or not and is getting distressed about it :/ sorry

sometimes all u need to do is take one second to say "(yeah this is a bit)" if someone is genuinely asking because they genuinely can't tell, and then you can continue with the bit. i just feel like refusing to acknowledge someone saying "i cant tell if youre joking or not" and you just continue, or even say, "im not joking" then you're not being very funny, you're just being kind of mean, i think.

obviously there is nuance to this and if you know someone really well sometimes going in harder on the bit will make them get that it's a bit and that's fine if you know them. but just be mindful, yknow? not everyone can pick up on stuff like that, and pushing harder on a bit by saying "im serious" when someone asks if you're joking or not can be harmful in some situations.
