Rex pulled a flashlight out of his pocket and flicked it on. He reached to his side holster and pulled out a large revolver. Lawless may have said it was empty but with the relic missing maybe something changed? He wasn’t willing to let that possibility slide. “Cy check my six I have point on this place you cant fly in there.”  Cy nodded his claws clicking forward into their attack mode and his wings retracted. He hated losing his best advantage but it wasn’t like he was unused to indoor fighting. The mega level demon at his back had his nerves on edge. “This place is an awful tight fit you sure its clear?” Cy asked tilting his head backwards at Lawless.

Beelzemon shrugged, “It was last time.”

He presumed that the temple had been abandoned for so long that the Digimon around it simply did not know what treasure had once been inside. Still, if even Rex was arming himself, Beelzemon thought to keep his Berenjenas within reach.

“Are you going in or what?” He challenged.

“Ya sorry.” Rex replied in a dry tone. Having these two along was gonna make this much more complicated. Rex walked in his flashlight scanning every corner carefully and quickly. His pistol trained and at the ready for any movement. He didn't see anything yet but this place was beautiful. The level of detail on the structure was impressive. Even though it was all digital he was always amazed by what the digital world could make.  Cy chuckled at the other Digimon’s challenge. Rex was ever the planner and the worrier it was kinda fun to have someone else around that was willing to dive in head first. Even if he did constantly have to be ready to tear his throat out. “I wish that prick had left the book it may have still been useful to us.” Cy said as he looked around.

Unfinished Business

Rex took a seat on the couch. This was gonna be tough to explain in any great detail. “Well awhile ago Cy and I served with the U.S special forces. Very special forces. A lot of it is classified but my unit dealt with issues regarding the Digimon I’m sure you coulda guessed. Recently one of my old contacts gave me a heads up a terrorist group may be on the move again. There isn’t enough proof yet that they are active again so the government won’t do anything. But these guys are bad news for the Digimon and humans. And they were my job to eliminate. So thats what I’m going to do but Cy and I don’t have the firepower to take them all down. Cy can only reach the mega level for brief times. We hate to admit it but we cant do it alone.” Rex said with a heavy sigh rubbing his eyes with the heels of his hands. “They are gonna hurt a lot of Digimon.” Cy said with a hiss. “They cheat and don’t see them as alive.”

His last sentence caught the attention of Bumblebee in particular. His pupils grew thin as the demon leaned forward, stifling the urge to curl his lip in disgust and reveal the fangs beneath.   ❝ Interesting, but not the first time we have dealt with something like this, ❞  Violet spoke. A hand came to rest against the shoulder of her demon partner in an attempt to soothe the tempest of emotion he felt.   ❝ – I am more than happy to help you on this, but as you know, I will have to take some kind of payment. I am willing to reduce the fee, however, and forego the otherwise mandatory deposit. Most who enter the office typically have LESSER problems, you see. ❞  Her hazel eyes danced away for a moment as she took a pull from her cigarette. ❝ My recommendation is to first do reconnaissance. Setting up vantage points and collecting information is vital, and what I am best at. We simply cannot go into this situation blindly. ❞

Rex ran a hand through his graying hair. “I would never expect charity that isn't who I am. I assure you I will pay whatever is normal including deposit. Even more if you would like since I'm assuming most of your jobs aren't as dangerous as this one. I came here because as much as it pains us to admit it Cy and I aren't strong enough on our own. Last time I tangled with these monsters I had a squad. Intel provided to me by the best. And the ability to call in backup. Even with all that I still lost men good men and Digimon that I couldn't save. I need someone who cares and understand the Digimon and isn't afraid to do what has to be done. I don't get out all that much and Cy thinks this was the best choice we had available.” He said with a sigh. He was really hoping these guys were down for good last time he fought them. “Im not going to let any of them get away and with Rex being retired we cant just call in the government for assistance if we get pinned down. In the human world its harder on Rex to keep us as Justimon.” Cyberdramon said with a snarl.  “Recon sounds like the best course of action. I agree with you the problem is the intel I got saying they are around again is bare bones. Hence why no official investigation is being pursued. How do you suggest we start. Ill admit me and Cy are better and search and destroy we both kinda lack the skill set for recon.” Rex said rubbing the back of his neck and earning a annoyed huff from Cy.

“Well fighting takes time. And I hate wasting time.” Rex replied simply with a shrug securing his pack to his back and slinging his rifle over his shoulder.  He would never call Cyberdramon weak. In all honestly his raw determination put him above most ultimate level Digimon. That and his instincts, the power Desolation Claw granted and Cy’s many years of combat experience. All these things made the small dragon a force to be reckoned with that allowed him to stand toe to toe with mega level Digimon in the past. But in his present shape every second weakened his armor. Without it he couldn’t move as fast he wouldn’t be able to fly and his blades wouldn’t respond to his commands. Eventually it would be the end of him. That and him trying to protect Rex by not merging into Justimon meant that if a fight took a turn for the worse Rex would be stuck doing little more than wishing his partner the best. He wasn’t willing to let that happen.  “I’m ready lets get a move on and see what this temple has to say for itself.” Without any promoting Cy picked Rex up and flapped his wings getting the duo airborne.

Beelzemon followed suit, spreading black feathered wings as he shifted to Blast Mode and remained a safe distance behind Cy. It would be the easiest thing to shoot the dragon and his partner out of the sky right now and just pursue the rest of the Antiquities on his own, but Beelzemon reminded himself that he would be better off having them on his side in the event of trouble. Cy would at least make a good diversion to draw enemy fire.

The return to the temple was silent, at least between Beelzemon and Cyberdramon. With the departure of Mistymon, weaker Digimon that had been frightened by the sorcerer’s presence gradually started coming out again, filling the land around them with life and sound.

“Up ahead.” Beelzemon stated when he caught a glimpse of the temple, “I found the book through the west entrance, we should check there!”

Rex really hated traveling like this. He felt like Cyberdramon’s luggage and a dead weight. He pretty much always traveled by walking but time was a critical point on this mission so he would have to swallow his pride. It sure was pretty up here though the Digital world shinned a different way from above. He wondered if Cy ever even noticed. “Copy that!” Rex yelled back to Lawless his voice struggling to carry with Cy’s speedy flying.  Cy could feel the demonic Digimon behind him. His visor flashed a warning for him to turn around and it took everything he had not to lash out from force of habit. It was his purpose to eliminate Virus Digimon and while he had learned some Virus Digimon weren’t so bad. Letting one of this power level go unchecked was driving him mad. When Lawless gave the directions his visor marked the location immediately and he flew towards it landing roughly on the ground nearby and setting Rex down. How big was this place? Who the heck even went through all the trouble to build it. Sure the Digital world had some random stuff in it but something like this must have taken someone forever and then some. “Isn’t this a little over doing it for one piece? They couldn’t just store all of them here?”

A fine point for sure, but Beelzemon shrugged the question aside. “Let’s just take a look and get it over with!” He huffed.

The entrance was annoyingly small, at least to Beelzemon, he could crawl through it on his hands and knees, which was irritating but his only other option would be to degenerate to a smaller level and walk through. He was not about to willingly make himself weaker with Cy around, not unless the dragon Digimon did the same.

Beelzemon gestured for Rex and Cy to go first, “I bet you could fit if you don’t mind getting your claws dirty.”

Rex pulled a flashlight out of his pocket and flicked it on. He reached to his side holster and pulled out a large revolver. Cyberdramon hissed at the air where the other Digimon once was. He hated that guy magic was such a weak tool warriors should fight toe to toe. He scanned the air with his visor the Digimon really was gone it wasn’t some cheap illusion.  He was so mad he couldn’t see straight. He wanted to kill that Digimon he wanted to feel his data crack under him. He focused his hands together and blasted a far off tree making it explode.  “Ya lets go Rex will want to know the plan.” Cy said his voice heavy with a rage he was barely containing.

“Oh we have a plan now?” Beelzemon hissed, “And here I thought we were just dancing for our little wizard friend!”

He hated saying it, but that was how he felt. The curses placed on the pair were only a means to make them do Mistymon’s bidding and if he wanted them to, the wizard was well within his means of making them dance for him. It was humiliating and infuriating.

Beelzemon stomped quickly back to the camp where they had left Rex, “You do the talking!” He snapped at Cy, “I don’t want to even think about the encounter we just had.”

Rex was about all packed up by the time the two Digimon returned. He watched Lawless walk off in a huff and saw the rage Cy carried. Being with two super powered monsters both in a rage wasn’t a great place to be. Doubly so when you are human with nothing but a high powered rifle to cover you.  “Ill explain.” Cy hissed out and gave a brief recap of all the events the pair went through his rage growing when talking about Mistymon.  “Ok so that guy is a demanding Digimon. But we were already gonna do that anyway so in a way we are smarter than him. He should have told you were the information was right away but he didn’t. We can do this.” Rex said scratching his chin and standing up to his full height slinging his backpack over his shoulder.

Beelzemon and Cy never did find anything to eat, since their foraging had been interrupted. He whistled for his motorcycle and turned to Rex and Cy with a short nod, “I’ll be back, don’t go anywhere.”

The demon sped off, returning in an hour with a box of donuts and some meat which he gave to Cyberdramon with no explanation of where he had gotten it. The details did not matter as long as they were not continuing their journey on empty stomachs.

Cy took the meat with a nod and started greedily ripping hunks off with his teeth. He wasn’t one to turn down free food really ever. Especially when they didn’t even get a satisfying hunt this morning. Being talked down to like that had left Cy frustrated and out of patience.  Rex nodded a thank you to Lawless for thinking of Cy. While they weren’t strangers to going without food it was never wise to be traveling with a starving dragon. “Thank you for getting him something we appreciate it. We should get a move on before something else finds out here. We are to exposed and who knows if the book missing changes anything in the surrounding area.”

Beelzemon shrugged, “What do I care if something else comes along, my curse is based on time, not how much strength I use.”

The problem was that he did not have a lot of time. The crack on Beelzemon’s tail ring was still small, but would grow with every day that passed until either the ring shattered or the curse was lifted.

He stuffed a handful of donuts in his mouth, barely bothering to chew before swallowing and starting again until the box was empty. With no proper garbage disposal to be seen, Beelzemon just dumped the empty box on the ground.

“I’m ready to go whenever you are.” He said.

“Well fighting takes time. And I hate wasting time.” Rex replied simply with a shrug securing his pack to his back and slinging his rifle over his shoulder.  He would never call Cyberdramon weak. Rex walked inside nodding to the Beelzemon in the room. Guess that was her partner how Cy made friends with a demonic Digimon was beyond him but Cy did have a habit of always surprising everyone. He focused back in on Violet at her question. “No go right ahead its no worries.” He said ringing his hands together.  “This place is nicer than where we live.” Cy said walking around the room sniffing everything he could.  “Cyberdramon!” Rex said glaring at his partner for being rude. “I apologize for him he’s immature.” Rex said with a forced laugh.

Violet was quick to dismiss the apology with a wave of her hand. ❝ NO – it is quite alright, ❞  she replied. Her fingers danced over a carton, swiftly fishing out a single cigarette to place between her lips. ❝ We did not always have this office. Our last home used to double as our office as well. But, least to say, we have a new sponsor. ❞    She gestured to the couch. ❝ Please. Sit down, and begin with your case. Bumblebee has been quite eager to know just as I have. ❞

Rex took a seat on the couch. This was gonna be tough to explain in any great detail. “Well awhile ago Cy and I served with the U.S special forces. Very special forces. Beelzemon offered a huff and malicious grin as Cy caught up to him. “Gathering for now, but if I see something worth hunting that will change.”

There was a stream nearby that would have been the perfect place to catch fresh fish, had Beelzemon not been repulsed by the idea of eating them. The rest of the forest was quiet, probably too early for any prey that would be worth the hunt. Fruit was acceptable, even if it was not Beelzemon’s favorite.

“You do me a favor and give a shout if you happen to see something more interesting than fruit to eat. Personally I prefer donuts, but I don’t see a shop around here.”

It was unusually quiet, and Beelzemon was starting to get tense. This type of silence was normally the first sign of danger, he kept talking to ease the tension that was steadily rising around him, but kept all three of his eyes attentive for an enemy.

“I hear that. I aint much of a fruit eater either.” Cy said in agreement as he flew onwards. Cy sniffed the air for anything out of the ordinary but couldn’t pick anything out. His visor wasn’t giving him any extra special details either. Which was weird cause this place was decently populated when he and Rex first rolled through.  He looked back over his shoulder he could hear Rex cleaning up camp so all was calm on that front but his instincts were screaming in his head so loud he could grind his teeth. “I usually prefer wild game to donuts but I wouldn’t turn one down right about now.” The dragon said landing on the ground next to Lawless.

For a moment, Beelzemon could believe that it was all his imagination, except that Cy had landed nearby and also seemed tense. Something was going on. Beelzemon reached for his Berenjenas, ready to fight or die.

Lights. Movement.

Beelzemon turned to face whatever it was that he had seen from the corner of his eyes and flinched at the bright light that was rapidly approaching.

“Damn!” He hissed, covering his eyes, which had begun to water from the intense brightness.

The light subsided to reveal Mystimon.

“You have recovered the Book.” The sorcerer Digimon said plainly.

“No shit.” Beelzemon replied, still covering his eyes, “Cy if you want to rip this scumbag to shreds, be my guest.”

Cy’s blades popped forward and his head swiveled constantly. Something was wrong big time Especially if Lawless was reaching for his weapons to.  The light was to much for even his visor to filter out it couldn’t hold back the burning that filled his eyes and he looked away. Hissing lowly waiting for his visor to catch up and darker so he could see.  Cy would have looked at Mystimon with a look of upmost hate if his eyes were visible. “Tried that once just got me put on this stupid treasure hunt like a pirate.” Cyberdramon said to Lawless growling angrily at the new Digimon.

“You both are so dramatic,” Mistymon continued with his monotone, “You need not be, you are now one step closer to lifting the curses I have placed on you both. Let me see the Book.”

Beelzemon growled, but with little choice, he handed over the treasure with a spiteful glare. “Don’t you need a key or something for it?”

Mistymon turned the book over in his hands, “Yes, I suppose I do. I’ve heard rumors that the location of the Key is carved into the stone walls of the temple.”

Beelzemon rolled his eyes, shooting Cy a look that said ‘can you believe this guy?’

““Yes, yes. The temple is the first place you should look.” Mistymon said dryly, his attention mostly focused on the book. “There are inscriptions on this cover, I believe they tell the location of the Eyeglass, but I must translate them.”

With that, Mistymon placed the Book into his robes, “Go forth, find the Key for me and I shall lighten the curses I have placed on you both.”

Beelzemon was getting really sick of that monotone voice.

“Why didn’t you tell me and Rex the cave walls were important before you sent us out?” Cy growled in mild annoyance.  Cy looked over at Lawless his teeth clenched together. He really couldn’t believe this guy. The high and mighty monotone voice was old. He was used to mega level Digimon looking down on him but usually they learned the hard way not to. But this Digimon and his curse was different he was completely at his mercy, and he hated it.  “What do you mean by lighten?” Cy asked in a hiss of a voice.

Mistymon heaved a sigh, “You shall seen if you succeed.”

He vanished then, simply twirled in his cloak and vanished. It was not quite as showy as the sorcerer Digimon’s blindingly bright entrance, but still a fascinating feat. Too bad Beelzemon was not in the mood to be impressed.

“Damn it!” He yelled, quickly drawing his Berenjena and firing in a random direction to vent his frustration.

After a few shots Beelzemon turned to ravaging the trees around them with his claws. Angrily snapping branches and trunks with no regard for the destruction he was causing until finally stopping for breath.

“I suppose we should go fetch your human and get to the ruin.” He said, forcing his voice back into a calm tone.

Cyberdramon hissed at the air where the other Digimon once was. He hated that guy magic was such a weak tool warriors should fight toe to toe.

“Why didn't you tell me and Rex the cave walls were important before you sent us out?” Cy growled in mild annoyance.  Cy looked over at Lawless his teeth clenched together. He really couldn't believe this guy. The high and mighty monotone voice was old. He was used to mega level Digimon looking down on him but usually they learned the hard way not to. But this Digimon and his curse was different he was completely at his mercy, and he hated it.  “What do you mean by lighten?” Cy asked in a hiss of a voice.

The light was to much for even his visor to filter out it couldn't hold back the burning that filled his eyes and he looked away.

Unfinished Business

Rex patted down his coat trying to look more professional. He cursed himself for not wearing his old uniform but that would have been to formal he felt. But what do you wear asking someone you barely know for help with something that is a demon from your past? Especially when all you have to go off of is a dragons recommendation that his friend could help easy. Honestly he thought Cy was just setting him up for humiliation. Before he was ready the door opened. “Uh hello I’m Rex its a pleasure to meet you.” He said offering his hand to shake. Cy sniffed the air when the door opened. He could definitely smell Bee in there so it was the right place. He had never seen the demons human before. Looked strong not as strong as Rex but probably better at social stuff since she had a business while Rex tried to hide from society. His human had to be superior though Cy was sure Rex was the best.

Bumblebee watched the Cyberdramon’s actions with peculiar interest. He seemed to be surveying the office space the two of them shared with a critical eye, although the demon couldn’t fathom what EXACTLY he was critiquing. It didn’t take long for him to dismiss the search altogether, choosing instead to lay his eerie eyes upon Cy’s human.     ❝ And you as well, ❞ Violet dipped her head in respect. She gestured inside, a brow raised as she waited.  ❝  Do you mind if I smoke? I presume this may be quite long, and filled with the need to take many notes. ❞

“I apologize for him he's immature.” Rex said with a forced laugh.

Beelzemon chuckle lightly, “It wasn’t exactly a higher form, but I’ll bite.”

Cy’s words did confuse him a little. “I thought you two were partners? So how come Rex isn’t into the chaos and destruction shtick too?”

Beelzemon never understood the Tamer dynamic of some Digimon and humans, but what little he had observed had so far painted a very different picture than what he saw between Cy and Rex.

Cy thought for a moment his clawed fingers drawing circles on his hands. “To be honest I’m not entirely sure myself. We aren’t like most partners Rex is older than most people with Digimon I’ve met and we met under different circumstances than most I’ve heard. To be honest something strange happened a long time ago Digimon bled through to the human world all wrong something in them broken. I was attacked when I was still in my Rookie form got yanked through to the human world by and angry Devidramon. Rex’s squad tried to deal with it but their weapons were not up to par. They all died. All of them but Rex. He tried to save me bastard would have cut me in half if Rex didn’t get his attention. Then he hit Rex. I thought he was dead and I dunno I got mad real mad. I went to Strikedramon and finished the bastard off. Medics came for Rex and he told them not to shoot me. So I came along for the ride served with him till that crisis stopped mysteriously. He got a Digivice at some point in that fight not sure when but. We make each other stronger even if we don’t see eye to eye all the time. He respects what I want and I try to respect what he wants. He retired from the official human military awhile ago and now he honestly just wants to help save people that need it.” Cy finished his little speech with a huff. “I dunno if that makes any sense.”

A Devidramon? Beezlemon briefly pondered the possibility that the Digimon from Cyberdramon’s story could have been him at a lower level. Honestly, attacking and kidnapping a rookie into the real world seemed like something he would do and then forget about, but then Cy finished the tale with the destruction of the Devidramon.

Clearly, that had not been him.

“Nope, none of it makes sense.” Beelzemon said, “But I don’t understand Digimon who partner up with humans even without the convoluted backstory.”

“Thats fair I don’t understand it a lot of the time either. Honestly as long as I have something to attack I’m content and Rex doesn’t stop me. And thanks to him I can grow more powerful. Power is worth it and its the whole reason we are on this quest I cant lose my armor its to important.” Cy said his visor going to his arms. He could swear even after just repairing it he could see some cracks coming back. They needed to solve this stupid mystery. They better get a good lead tomorrow sure Rex is smart but there had to be a reason that they were being sent instead of the jerk getting it himself. “Did you get attacked in the temple?” He asked the demon Digimon. “What happened in there?”

“Ha!” Beelzemon faked a laugh, “I wish something had happened in there!”

He had explained earlier ‘I found the Book I stopped caring and got the Hell out’ and had not been exaggerating. The temple had been, as far as Beelzemon knew, empty. Not even a trap or puzzle to make the trip worthwhile. Just the book.

Well, that was a bit of a lie, there had been traps, but they had already been sprung. Obviously Beelzemon had not been the first to go into the temple searching for the Book, just the very fortunate last.

“Look, we’ll worry about the temple tomorrow.” He growled, “We already agreed to go back and investigate more, so let’s just shut up and sleep.”

The demon laid back against the tree, content to let the conversation end there so that he could rest.

“Whatever you say.” Cy said stretching his wings out and settling in. He wasn’t going to sleep he didn’t need much of it anyway. His cybernetic parts never tired after all. Cy pulled out a small hunk of wood and started carving into it with his claws silently to pass the time.  Rex rose early before the sun the next morning as per his usual ritual first thing came food. He made a chicken MRE to at least have something in his stomach it wasn’t hard to get food that tasted better especially with Cy and his rifle but they were going to be in a hurry this morning and he didn’t want to hold up his new friend. And Cy’s future being on the line time was not something he was willing to waste on something as foolish as his human needs. He really wished they weren’t in this situation but wishing it away was just wasted energy. Cy started taking his small camp down for him as he ate and he silently thanked his partner with a nod.

Beelzemon woke to the smell of food. Not exactly the best quality food, but food nonetheless.

“Breakfast?” He mumbled, rolling on his side and away from the tree.

Sleeping against it had been a bad idea, Beelzemon’s back was sore and his shoulders ached. He stretched multiple times, trying to make the pain ebb away gently. Eventually it did, but Beelzemon’s limbs remained irritatingly stiff.

Whatever Rex was eating, Beelzemon could tell he wanted no part of it, but the demon Digimon agreed that Rex had the right idea. A bite to eat before they left would definitely lift his mood. He was used to foraging for his own food and did happen to already know where there were trees burdened with ripe fruit.

Not his favorite meal, but still better than nothing.

“I’ll be back,” Beelzemon said bluntly as he disappeared into the trees.

Rex was about to offer the demon Digimon some of his rations but he took off. He looked down at his meal and shrugged. “Guess if you aren't used to it its not very appetizing huh Cy?” Rex said taking another bite.  “Im gonna go see what he went to go eat.” Cy said flying off after Lawless.  “Oh come on they aren't that bad Cyberdramon I've seen you scarf down ten of these!” Rex yelled as his partner flew off.  Once he caught up to the larger Digimon Cy hovered over him. “Hunting or gathering?” He asked looking down at Lawless the sun reflecting off his visor.
