Meeting People Is Easy (1998) dir. Grant Gee
For the artist questions 32 what is your go to expression (you are so good at expressions) and if someone already asked that then 31 (you are so good at poses). 41 share a time when you couldn't figure something out and how you figured it out, would love to see examples if you feel like sharing. Bless us with your wisdom!
31. what's your go-to pose?
what's more go-to than the classic profile lean-in, i say.
32. what's your go-to expression?
i think this sort of frowning-into-the-kiss expression like so lol
gotta have a little worry with the love
41. share a time when you couldn't figure something out and how you figured it out
ooh unlocking a secret question! but i'm not sure i have a wise answer to it :0 every drawing is made of a hundred moments of figuring something out. if you ever saw me trying to decide on a colour scheme in my art, you'd cry. it's a mess. so i guess the answer is trial and error!
hey much like a rabbit introduced unwanted to the bush, here i am coming lowercased into your asks to be retaliatory: 17. what is YOUR favorite line you've written; 66. when have you felt most confident in your writing?
cheeky AND sneaky! <3
17. what is YOUR favorite line you've written
immediately I can only think of one-word sentences or bits of speech that only work in context. but I do like this girl below from the mars fic for the way it peaks rhythmically as the climactic sentence of the fic. It captures a lot of what I feel about how simple and small Dean's yearnings are. And (speaking to the next question) it just kinda came out the fingers so I appreciate her for that as well haha
The truth was he wanted to touch, he just wanted to touch, he wanted Sam to know him and he wanted to know Sam and what he felt like, his skin in soft places and how hot it was and how he'd breathe to be touched there and he wanted to see how that felt on Sam's face and he wanted Sam to press him down and show him everything he’d learned without Dean and he wanted to believe that that would be enough to fix him, that it would make him someone whole and strong and not the stunted faithless son he was.
66. when have you felt most confident in your writing?
When? I had a lot of confidence in I guess what I'd call the first phase of my (jesus) 'writing career' because I was able to produce, with effort but not struggle, stuff that people responded well to. I felt pretty good about myself during and after the writing process. I lost a lot of that in 2017 or so. but sometimes I can still get to a place where it flows out at a 95% right-word hit rate and that feels good.
1175: then what do you aim for?

Day 12 : Duck McDonald (Callum Keith Rennie) in Wilby Wonderful [2004]
Obsession can take you to some terrible terrible places. That’s not a précis of the film, it’s a description of my years as a CKR fan (hands up who else owns Trapped on DVD, eh?). But it can also take you to very wonderful places, and Wilby is one of them, and Duck is the most wonderful of its inhabitants.
Oh, Duck. While all the madness and heartbreak and despair and dodgy dealing and bad relationships and awkwardness goes on around him (this makes the film sound traumatic, which it’s not, it’s really blackly comic) he’s the still, small, centre of the film; a quiet, steady, zen-like presence, the guardian angel of the town. He’s also waiting for something, for someone, but with infinite patience. And he’s such a damn cutie, especially at the end.
I will admit the first time I watched WW I had a moment of existential breakdown when Duck is in the car with Buddy, because until then I’d never really believed that Due South was over, and then here those two idiots were, and there was no going back. But once that passed I got to enjoy it for the glorious film it is, and for the bloody fabulous character Duck is. And to see CKR in a check shirt and jeans. Hell yeah.
duck deserves his own shoutout! i only have this to add: it’s amazing how ckr’s whole demeanor here is so different from what we get used to in his general screen presence. it’s like his whole face transforms, something deep there relaxed into a quiet, still sort of kindness.
one of my favourite scenes in wilby is carol’s breakdown. sandra oh is stellar in it, but the way ckr plays duck’s reaction, almost completely silent but with this immediate shift into compassion visible in details like the set of his mouth, gets to me.
oh, lol, and if anybody has the commentary track, please point them my way. thank you!
Very well said about CKR's work in Wilby Wonderful and if you (general) are interested in seeing more of him in this mode get yourself to Little Pink House. It's the purest of supporting roles - the movie is Keener's - and he pulls back his usual CKR weirdness and force into a sweet naturalistic domesticity. It's a small and lovely performance in a flawed but respectable indie.
MEMENTO 2000, dir. Christopher Nolan
@ds30below in the consistently ahem filmographies of the central dS trio the few bright spots belong to CKR; high on that list is Memento. The additional presence of Irene Zuko of course cements Memento as a core C6D text. Somehow Nolan achieves what few others in the history of the world achieved which is to make CKR look his actual height and almost beefy; in that respect it's also a key CKR text. Dodd is not what you'd call a "face time" role but he is responsible for the most harmlessly funny moment in the movie, which we cling to because all the other funny moments are terrifically bleak. Thank you Dodd and thank you CKR
"max why do you insist on mutti passata when val verde, leggo's or even generic brands offer dollar savings--" stop. is happiness of no consequence to you? is pleasure to be despised? is the brief consciousness you have been blessed with so common as to be loathsome

for rayk-on-boats appreciator @feroxargentea, who said "Jack Aubrey would be so proud of him not going up through the lubber's hole" and was absolutely right
I’m late to the party! But if you’re still doing them: 🌵 🍬 🌿
I'm so sorry nonny I didn't spot this notification I hope you see this in time! apologies in advance for being a boring person my soul is dogshit as you know
🌵 ⇢ share the link to a playlist you love
I don't use online music services and I can't think of any clever answers oh no. here have a link to what is easily the best track on pj harvey's lastest album it has a great video too. one day i'll figure out something to steal that chorus into.
🍬 ⇢ post an unpopular opinion about a popular fandom character
i honestly...........i mean my opinions are just so inarguably reasonable and uncontroversial.......who is popular.....i could have done without the interminable crowley and rowena show. for all that the actors work hard to bring the juice, it should have stayed in the fridge. but what would have replaced it? something worse probably. swings and roundabouts eh
🌿 ⇢ give some advice on writer's block and low creativity
good to get a sense of why things are low and blocked and what the purpose of writing is during that time is. maybe your instincts are telling you the thing you're trying to do isn't the right thing for your current mojo and skill set, so you can chuck it and take a left turn into a different and/or fun exercise or medium. but maybe you gotta give it and yourself an honest break. lift the cognitive load, get outside, listen to the birds for as many hours or months as you need to until life gives you a break. or maybe you hit a natural plateau in your skill level and wrote out all the words you know how to write. fill yourself up with new words from new sources. and also birdsong.
