Our fandom forbearers did NOT suffer through Anne Rice, strikethrough, and other bullshit for fucking ACOTAR and Harry Potter fans to fucking ruin it for all of us by selling fanfiction. I am not losing novel length yaoi epics because some of you don't know how to act in fannish spaces and yes I do blame the booktokification of fanfic but I also blame those of you that treat fandom like content to consume and not a community to engage with.

Seriously people, learn fandom etiquette. It exists, it exists for extremely good reasons, and it's been decades in the making.

INUYASHA FANFICTIONS.  THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW.

Okay, as much as I love Inuyasha. AS MUCH AS I LOVE IT. A majority of those who are writing the fanfictions really need to do your research. As a writer and an Asian Pacific Studies minor…you all really have to do your research when you are writing. Take into account the era which you are writing in. Yes it is a modern day girl time traveling but she is traveling to a specific time period. So here are some thing to help you.  1. Undergarments are NOT CALLED Bras and Panties. The only time that you should be using these specific terms is when you are addressing Kagome’s clothing. Japanese traditional clothing is very specific. For example, the KIMONO. Yes you have an actual garment called a Kimono but this is just the beginning. There are Numerous different types of Kimono’s based on your status, your age, whether or not you are married, funeral/mourning kimonos, wedding kimonos, there is the nine layer. There are 10 different types of Kimonos for women alone. The Furisode, aka the swinging sleeves. “It is the most formal clothes for unmarried women to wear in special occasions including coming of age ceremony, voting, wedding ceremony (unmarried female relative from the bride’s family) and tea ceremony.” Even the undergarments belonging to a kimono are very specific garments. Men basically…wore a loincloth thong. I will leave ya’ll to have that image of Sesshoumaru in that. You’re welcome.

2. Please for the love of God stop putting Rin with Sesshoumaru! Rin is Sesshoumaru’s ward. Yes, it is okay for the Lord to marry his ward, IF she is only one to three years bellow marriage age. However, in this case, Sesshoumaru raised Rin from the age of about 6ish. This is not okay. Due to the fact that this would mean, if you are putting Rin with Sesshoumaru once he has rasied her. Sesshoumaru is a Inu Youkai, Rin is of his pack. He is the alpha and she is his pup. The alpha is supposed to be the strongest out of the pack. Rin being a human will never be seen at that level. She is fragile in his eyes. If she had any magical abilities they would have already have shown themselves. He is not a human lord he is a demon lord. But even more than that he is a Dai Youkai or a demon of God level standing.

3. Most of you, and I have been guilty of this fact too. So there fore WE, who are Westerners look at courtship differently than those in the Eastern Asian countries. This is part of the research aspect. Even if it is a fanfiction and not an original story you have to put in research. You need to understand what it is you are writing. But not even writing, the more you research it helps you understand what you are reading and watching. For example: You can do what I do and make a timeline with your research to help you. Timelines always help. Inuyasha in the earlier years before Inuyasha was actually born, takes place around the Onin War which was in 1467 before guns ever appeared in Japan. Then by doing math and figuring out the possible ages of the characters you can add and subtract numbers. Based on my research, Onigumo was possibly born around 1473 and died in 1493 creating Naraku. Also in 1493 Kikiyo seals Inuyasha to the tree and then dies. 50 years later in 1543 Kagome shows up and the entire series begins.

4. Please understand the language and terms you are using. Now I am not asking you to learn Japanese just to write a fanfiction. What you need to do is understand specific terms and HOW to use them properly. I have been corrected numerous times by my “ASIAN” friends on this subject. Both of Japanese and Korean words. For example: The proper way to use sibling titles is to just use the word for sibling like “Otouto” NOT “Otouto-Kun.” The usage of Kun you can use when addressing a friends sibling not your own. When you put the suffix on like this you are saying they are not your sibling. This is denouncing your relationship with that sibling. However, it is different when it is the elder sibling for it is a form of respect. Such as when Kohaku addresses Sango as “Onee-San” because she is older than him. In East Asian countries RESPECT IS LOVE. I mean you would not address your Senpai as Senpai-San, or sensei-san. They are just titles and by calling them their titles it is respect. Otherwise you get hit…not fun. OR as they say in Mexico. CHANCLA.

5. Kagome’s bathing habits. In the Feudal era, and most women in historical times did not bathe that often. And if they did they normally would bathe in perfumes or oils. Sango is a working class woman she would not be bathing that often. Before the Edo period bathing habits were different. In the Edo period they introduced bath houses to the commoners. Kaede’s VILLIAGE is very very small farming village. They would not be bathing as often as someone of the more wealthy elite classes. Miroku is a Monk, they are more or less a beggar. They gave up worldly goods to find internal peace. How does Sango react to Kagome everytime they are in spring up to their shoulders together? So 20 years after Kagome arrives the Samurai make bathing a thing. (According to my timeline research).

6. Now this is just something I want someone to address in fanfiction that is not covered all that much. Kagome is 15 years old. What ususally happens to 15 year old girls ONCE A MONTH?…….A PERIOD. The curse the devil the red sea. Why has no one taken this into account? I mean look at her most of the time. She is erratic. Bratty (anime Kagome specifically). Spiteful. UNHINGED. And had God-like strength. Lol. If this is not a woman on her period I don’t know what is. And I should know what its like having a period. If she is in the “Feudal” era. Where are the bag of used products? Why has no demon come after her? Why would Shippo not be freaking out? Inuyasha not so much he grew up with a single mom. Is this why she goes home so often? And not just because of her studies? Mostly just curious. Has anyone else thought of this aspect.

7. Where does all the trash go….? The food trash…the med kit trash…where does it all go? Gonna leave it at that.

Okay so let me just state this. I am not flaming anyone here. This is all merely to help those who love Inuyasha just as I do. Because I believe in all of you who write these fanfictions. I want you to be able to become amazing writers and write good fanfictions. I do hope that this does help people. Also, please be safe. Wear a mask.

Voting for Democrats is the "leaving the house, getting some exercise, and drinking more water is good for your mental health" of societal change. Everyone keeps telling you to do it, worst of all your mom keeps telling you to do it, and it's not a magical cure-all, but it actually works and rotting in your room shitposting does not help in either scenario.

Also like mental health, voting doesn't solve the whole problem! But if you aren't doing this bare minimum thing, the other tools you have aren't going to work as well as they should either. If you get medicine and continue rotting in your room shitposting, you will probably still be miserable. If you get a union at work but don't vote for politicians who support unions, the union won't be able to advocate for its members as effectively and work will still be miserable.

Voting is maintenance. It's like doing the dishes or cleaning the leaves out of the gutters. You're never going to get to a point where you are Done and Never Have To Do It Again (alas,) because time will continue to pass and you will continue to eat meals and the trees will continue to drop leaves into your gutters and right wingers will continue to submit bad bills to every session of congress.

You'll never be done with maintenance. But if you don't do that maintenance, your situation can and definitely will get Worse

oh my god i figured it out

okay so it took an accident of me not checking on it, but I FINALLY figured out why I wasn't getting enough loft on my bread:

I was NOT giving enough time for yeast/bacteria production.

So if I do my other bread recipe's 4 hour levain development, then follow the pullman's recipe and do about an hour and a half initial rise (with stretch and folds) with a one hour final rest and rise, I get something like this:

okay that rose in the oven but like. not a whole lot, yknow?

tried again, a little longer on the levain, but this time I tried to do the final rest/rise in the fridge overnight like when you have an overnight ferment on a classic sourdough

oh that's a lot better! but the recipe is for a PULLMAN'S loaf, it should be square as possible, am I using enough ingredients?

NO I WAS. I JUST WASNT GIVING ALL THE TIMES ENOUGH TIME

this time I let the levain (40-50g starter, 35g whole wheat flour, 35g AP flour, 70 mL water) develop for like six and a half hours in a proofer or a slightly warmed oven.

pour levain into a stand mixer if you've got one, bowl if you dont. Mix in sugar (35g) and warm water (400mL). Let that sit for the usual half hour in proofer.

add flour (600ish grams total, i often do about a third whole wheat to two thirds AP), 5g salt, 80-90g fat of choice (butter, margarine, etc). I put it in the stand mixer for around 10 minutes on low. (this is a REALLY old stand mixer so it CAN go real slow- do 7-8 min on lowest setting on a modern mixer, 15 min if you wanna do a hand knead)

cover and put in proofer. As usual I did 4 stretch and folds at half hour intervals, but on the final interval I forgot about the timer- it was left in the bowl for around a full hour after the last fold rather than the planned half hour.

by the time I checked on it, it rose WAY more than i was expecting it to. Decided to roll with it (lol), greased the pullman's pan (butter if no one's allergic, margarine otherwise), flattened, rolled up the dough, plopped it in and slid on the lid.

Did the final rest for two full hours in proofing temps, then baked at 350-60ish for a half hour with the lid slid on, 15 min with the lid off.

so, all in all: the ideal loaf of pullman's sourdough starts when you wake up and comes out around dark lunch.

not practical but hey! an interesting study to be sure

OH ALSO

what probably also helped was the the previous night I gave my sourdough a feeding (40g rye, 40g AP, 80 mL water) and made sure that it digested this meal outside of the fridge to max out yeast production.

ALSO it's been unusually warm these last two days so that might have also helped.

anyways have a photo of the crumb (my bread knife is kinda dogshit and the insides are oh-so soft)

and my slicey slice with butter and orange marmalade

please bear in mind that there are FAR simpler sourdough recipes- I am simply on the warpath for the PERFECT sourdough grilled sandwich and that means perfecting the bread first

everyone keeps telling me to watch that show what the fuck happens on the bear

Good news, fellow artists! Nightshade has finally been released by the UChicago team! If you aren't aware of what Nightshade is, it's a tool that helps poison AI datasets so that the model "sees" something different from what an image actually depicts. It's the same team that released Glaze, which helps protect art against style mimicry (aka those finetuned models that try to rip off a specific artist). As they show in their paper, even a hundred poisoned concepts make a huge difference.

(Reminder that glazing your art is more important than nighshading it, as they mention in their tweets above, so when you're uploading your art, try to glaze it at the very least.)

Everyone reblog! Spread the word so more and more artists learn that in addition to Glaze that coats art against ai scraping mimicry there's also an offensive tool now, able to skew and poison data pools.

Now poisoning will need many artists to nightshade their art and it's most important to get this ou to those the most at risk of being scraped. Reblog!

This is my tribe. Many of us in our home countries live off selling handmade goods, especially the mochilas. Weaving is an important Wayuú tradition. Every pattern and assortment of colors tells a unique story, and it's important to our cultural identity. And right now with the crises in Venezuela and Colombia, a lot of us are struggling financially. Please always purchase directly from indigenous communities!

2024’s public domain is a banger

They stole something from you. For decades, they stole it. That thing they stole? Your entire culture. For all of human history, works created in living memory entered the public domain every year. 40 years ago, that stopped.

First in 1976, and then again in 1998, Congress retroactively extended copyright's duration by 20 years, for all works, including works whose authors were unknown and long dead, whose proper successors could not be located. Many of these authors were permanently erased from history as every known copy of their works disappeared before they could be brought back into our culture through reproduction, adaptation and re-use (copyright is "strict liability," meaning that even if you pay to clear the rights to a work from someone who has good reason to believe they control those rights, if they're wrong, you are on the hook as an infringer, and the statutory damages run to six figures).

Works that are still in our cultural currents 50 or 70 or 90 years after their creation are an infinitesimal fraction of all the works we create as a species. But these works are – by definition – extraordinarily important to our culture. The creators who made these works were able to plunder a rich public domain of still-current works as inputs to their own enduring creations. The slow-motion arson attack on the public domain meant that two generations of creators were denied the public domain that every other creator in the history of the human race had enjoyed.

As 2019 drew nearer, the copyright resistance who had fought over this grew nervous, then…elated. Was Congress actually going to heed the evidence of a decades-long failed experiment and decline to extend copyright again?

I had pitched email debates with comrades over this. Michael S Hart, visionary founder of the Project Gutenberg, was certain it wouldn't happen (he didn't live to see it). But then, miraculously, astoundingly, 2019 rolled around and we got new works in the public domain!

For decades, Jennifer Jenkins from the Duke Center for the Study of the Public Domain published an annual lament for the public domain works we weren't getting that year. Jenkins painstakingly cataloged the materials that the public would be denied, though their creators had been only too happy to release them with the belief that the copyright would be 40 years shorter than it turned out.

Starting in 2019, those laments turned into celebrations, starter pistols for a generation of creators discovering a living public domain for the first time since the Carter administration. The 1923 works that entered the public domain in 2019 were mostly curiosities, but with each successive year, the public domain's new arrivals get ever more vibrant.

The public domain shipment that arrived on January 1, 2023 was a banger: we got some Virginia Woolf, some Hemingway, some Kafka, some Faulkner, some Agatha Christie and Edith Wharton, as well as Proust and Hesse:

All of Sherlock Holmes came home to the public domain last year. We also got "Ol' Man River," "Puttin' On the Ritz" and "Mississippi Mud."

What we didn't get 2023? Sound recordings. The Music Modernization Act froze all sound recordings in copyright until 2024 – that is, until 11 days hence.

So apparently some people new to Tumblr think a repost and a reblog are the same thing, so when they see creators asking for people to not repost, they're thinking the creators are saying to not reblog 😭

Y'all, a repost is when you copy/download the work and create a new post using the work making it seem as if it's yours. A reblog is you using a site provided feature to share the creator's post directly from the creator so that it's still credited to them and they still get all of the traction/notes from the work.

Please, reblog fics/art/etc. that you enjoy! Reblogging is not reposting! Creatives need support too, and reblogging is a way to do that!

In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.

I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!

From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!

I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.

The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.

(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)

If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.

The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.

  • insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box
  • add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box
  • delete -> self explanatory
  • on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic

The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.

Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.

hate what people did to the dead dove tag

mothers and fuckers of the jury. "Dead dove: do not eat" is a label on a bag in the fridge. It means "the content of this bag is exactly what is labeled". It does not mean "trigger warning uhhh something". In fact, it means the exact opposite of "trigger warning uhhh something", because tou use it with other tags. You write a fucked up fic with extreme violence and gore, you tag it as "extreme violence", "gore" and you tag it with "dead dove: do not eat". You write a fic with emotional abuse, gaslighting and manipulation, you tag it with "emotional abuse", "gaslighting" and "dead dove: do not eat". You write a fic with your extremely niche kink that appeals to like 3 other people and may skeeve out the rest of the fandom, you tag that with your kink and "dead dove: do not eat". It's so people know you're really mean the content warnings.

It's NOT a catch-all term for "uhhh this may be fucked idk". TAG YOUR SHIT GENEROUSLY.
