The Society of Queer Momentum holds a news conference to launch the National Rainbow Week of Action, which is being billed as the largest 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy campaign since the push for marriage equality. Rallies are scheduled to take place across the country as allies urge the federal government to respond to a call of action.

See full details regarding the Week of Action (May 11th-17th, 2024) here: https://www.rainbowequality.ca/

Excerpt from this story from Smithsonian:

For the first time, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) is celebrating the birth of two pygmy slow lorises, an endangered species. Small Mammal House keepers reported for duty the morning of March 21 and observed that 3-year-old mother Naga had given birth overnight and was caring for two infants. She and the babies’ 2-year-old father, Pabu, received a recommendation to breed from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP). These babies are the first offspring for both parents. Keepers have observed Naga carrying, grooming and nursing the babies, which appear to be healthy and strong. Animal care staff will determine the babies’ sexes at their first vet exam, which will take place in a few months. The family is on view at the Small Mammal House, and keepers say the babies are most active in the late morning and early afternoon.

Slow lorises are the only known venomous primates. They produce a venom in their brachial glands in their upper arm. Combined with enzymes in their saliva, these primates can produce a painful bite, allergic reaction and a slow-healing wound. Wild slow lorises do not use it against predators because the venom is not fast-acting. Instead, the venom is used in territorial disputes with other slow lorises. They also groom themselves with the venom to ward off parasites and warn predators to stay away.

Native to Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Vietnam, pygmy slow lorises live in mixed deciduous and evergreen forests. The greatest threats facing this species are deforestation and the illegal pet trade. Much of their habitat has been cleared for the logging industry; they spend the majority of their time from 10 to 40 feet up in the forest canopy. The International Union for Conservation of Nature considers pygmy slow lorises endangered.

It’s extra not fun when literally everything that happens to me is experienced as an autistic person, with an autistic brain and body, so that normal regiments of treatment simply don’t work for me.

And when I try to research “x problem and autism” nothing helpful comes up, if there even IS anything saying “yeah, autistic people who also have x don’t respond to treatment / need a different approach.”

Avatar

Sometimes the autism just activates and you pace around outside your yard in a particular path, in a particular direction, with a particular speed and rhythm, while gripping the tops of your pajama pants, for about thirty, thirty-five minutes. After you have to relax your hands and shoulders, so you do a different pacing activity in a different area, at a different speed and pace, so that’s another while, and you are all the while very stuck in your head and the motions.

A small rant about neurotypical people.

I hate when they tell me my experience is normal.

‘I feel removed and alien in relation to every single human being I’ve met" they say “oh everyone feels like they don’t belong and they don’t fit in”

no you don’t understand, I’ve felt fundamentally different from the very beginning, as a child I felt like an odd thumb, a blob, unable to connect to people” they say “oh every kid feels that way”

no you don’t understand! it’s not about fitting in, it’s about literally feeling alien and being "weird”, and when you’re reprimanded because you’re not like everyone else you hide it, sacrificing authentic connection" they say “oh everyone is different when they’re alone”

They can’t grasp the alienating, lonely and terrifying feeling of not feeling human the same way everyone else is.

Why can’t they listen?

Hello, I haven’t seen anyone share anything about this, there’s a campaign to send letters to MP’s and organize rallies to support 2SLGBTQ+ people, and speak out against the politicians using them as scapegoats. There’s a script of a letter that you can send to your MP right there on their website, and there are several events planned across the country.

Queer and trans people are our friends, family, neighbours and coworkers. Just like everyone in Canada, queer and trans people deserve the freedom to be ourselves, to be safe in our communities, and treated with dignity. Through a National Rainbow Week of Action from May 11th to 17th 2024, we are lifting up our voices to urge governments and elected officials at every level to take action for Rainbow Equality and address rising hate.
Right now, hate is on the rise, powered by far-right groups and opportunistic politicians who are scapegoating 2SLGBTQ+ people for political gain. Instead of addressing the housing crisis, fixing our healthcare system or supporting fair wages, they’re trying to distract and divide by taking cheap shots at a vulnerable community. Underneath their pretty slogans is an insidious agenda - an effort to restrict our freedoms, control our bodies and sow division. But we reject their agenda - we choose unity, love and a better Canada for all our families instead.

So far there are events in:

Alberta: Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Red Deer, St. Albert.

BC: Fernie, Vancouver.

Manitoba: Winnipeg.

New Brunswick: Fredericton, Saint John

Nunavut: Iqaluit.

Ontario: Barrie, Hamilton, Kitchener, London, Orillia, Ottawa, Peterborough, Renfrew, Sarnia, St. Catherines, Toronto, Waterloo.

PEI: Charlottetown.

Saskatchewan: Saskatoon.

Yukon: Whitehorse.

There are now also events in:

Pembina Valley, Manitoba.

Kanata, Ontario.

Kamloops, British Columbia.
