Childhood Stories #15

I found some of the stories I wrote when I was younger. I had completely forgotten about them, but reading them now I think they’re hilarious(ly bad), so I thought I’d share them! Also, @raindrop-rouge wanted to read them, so here you go! Some of them seem to be assignments related to other stories, so let me know if you recognise any (because I can’t remember)! Some were written in English, some I’ve translated from Norwegian.

The barn that caught fire (age ca. 10, Norwegian)

The whole thing started at about 07:00. A fire was raging from the whole building! Majken, the youngest of the sisters, was inside the barn without anyone knowing about it. Majken was kidnapped by a mentally ill man who was actually their neighbour named Donald Duck. He was very fond of the Happy Meal from McDonald’s. Majken had accidentally fallen asleep in the barn. The fire came closer and closer! She was terrified! Eventually she committed suicide because she knew she was going to die anyway. Everyone was very sad when they found out what had happened. The end.

Saturday 17th January

Mr. Lucas came by today as well. What’s up with that guy? If he’s interested in mum, that’s fine, but he’s married! I was going to go into the kitchen to talk to him today, but guess what happened! Pandora called! But she only wanted to know what the geography homework was… But what if she called me, and no one else, on purpose. She probably likes me. Yeah, I think she does. My dog is looking better, by the way.

Monday 19th January

Guess what! I’m sure Pandora likes me. Today, in geography, she asked me if she could borrow a pen! And not only that! She gave it back! Today I played football in P.E. class. Not exactly my favourite sport. If I even have a favourite sport. Baltus is lying on my bed with me at the moment, he’s much happier now than he was on Thursday. I thought he might have to get put down for biting the vet! But, as the vet said, he had good reason to be scared. Today mum is going to the cinema with Mr. Lucas. By the way, he told me to call him by his first name, Rolf Roger. What a funny name! Seriously, can you think of a worse name? Rolf Roger… Hah.

Wednesday 21st January

Ok, now I’m sure Pandora definitely DOESN’T like me. I saw her today, with Tom. Pfft. Tom. What’s he got that I haven’t? So they were just standing there. Kissing. To be honest, I’m really, freaking jealous. But, seriously! Tom! Even if he is the most popular guy in school, plus, he’s super sporty, smart and all that. He has nothing on me, right? Guess I have to face the facts… Pandora’s taste in guys is horrible! That’s not my fault. I have my Baltus. I bet Mr. Sporty doesn’t even have a pet. He’s probably an animal abuser.

Thursday 22nd January

Ok, so Mr. Sporty apparently has two dogs. In any case, I’m not gonna waste my time on Pandora and him anymore! I’m too good for them. Mum hasn’t seen Rolf Roger (hehe) since they went to the cinema on Monday. I have a feeling it didn’t go so well, ‘cause mum came home laughing, mumbling something weird. I’m not sure, but it sounded like she said something about pouring soda on his head. I wonder what he did!

The Cursed Stones (age I don’t know, New Norwegian)

Once upon a time there was a prince who was sleeping in his soft bed with fifteen mattresses and a tiny pea underneath all of them. He usually dreamt of the most distant mountains and the deepest seas, but one day he dreamt of a beautiful princess, the most beautiful princess he had ever seen. She was sitting on a big stone in the middle of the greenest forest. When the prince woke up, he told his best friend and stepbrother: “I dreamt of the most beautiful princess in the land, she is sitting on a stone in the middle of a forest, and I am going to find her and marry her!” The prince’s stepbrother smiled, and thought to himself that if he married a princess he would finally become a prince himself and rule the kingdom instead of his stepbrother.

The evil stepbrother instantly went to his secret shortcut down some narrow stairways. He then went up a steep, steep hill, and then he was inside a dark forest. On his way to find the princess he met a rabbit who was sitting next to a blackberry bush and nomming away on the berries. “Where is the princess?” the stepbrother exclaimed. “I don’t know,” the rabbit answered, and kept eating its berries. This made the stepbrother so angry he pulled out the entire blackberry bush and threw it as far as he could.

The stepbrother then kept walking down the path, and shortly after met a large bear. The bear was roaring and waving its paws around, and this made the stepbrother so scared he ran away further into the forest. He ran and ran until he suddenly ran straight into a moose. The moose huffed at him and kept walking. The stepbrother ran after and asked: “Where is the princess?” The moose turned around, huffed at him once again and said calmly: “I will tell you where the princess is if you help me find my right antler.” “Hell no, I’m not going to waste my time finding your antler, you big beast!” the stepbrother answered, and went on down the path.

Shortly after, the stepbrother came upon a large tree, and he noticed the moose’s antler, but went straight past it, because behind this tree and that antler, he could see a princess standing between to large stones. The stepbrother smiled, ran over to the princess and said “I found you first! Now we can get married and I will become a prince!” The princess stared at him for a little while before she sat down on the stone to the right. Suddenly the skies became darker, and the wind was becoming fiercer. Thunder and lightning was coming closer and closer to the two of them. Eventually the storm was right above the princess, and at that time she pointed at the stepbrother. Lightning struck, and when the princess opened her eyes again, he was gone.

At the same time, the prince had just left his castle. He was now at the bottom of the steep hill which the stepbrother had begun his journey on earlier. He went up the hill and soon met the rabbit. It was crying so badly the prince asked what was wrong. “A mean, mean man threw away my blackberry bush!” the rabbit wailed. The prince answered: “I will help you find your blackberry bush, follow me!” and the rabbit followed him along the path.

Shortly after, the two of them met a large bear. He was roaring and waving his arms, so the prince asked him what was wrong. “A mean, mean man threw a blackberry bush at me, so now I have a bunch of thorns stuck on me!” the bear cried. “I’ll help you get those thorns out!” the prince said and gave the blackberry bush back to the rabbit. He then removed the bear’s thorns. When he was done, they all smiled at each other and went their own ways.

The prince went down the path once again, and met a moose. The moose huffed at him and turned away from him. The moose looked angry, so the prince asked it what was wrong. “A mean, mean man ran right into me so I lost my right antler, and then he didn’t even want to help me find it again!” the moose shouted. “I’ll help you find your right antler!” the prince said, and together they started looking for it. After a while, they came upon a large tree, and right next to it the moose’s antler lay. The moose thanked the prince for helping him and told him the princess was right behind that tree.

The prince slowly approached the princess while telling her: “I dreamt of you last night. I’ve come to find you as soon as I could, just to tell you that you are the most beautiful princess in the land, and I would like for you to become my bride sometime in the future.” The princess once again stood in between the two stones, and stared at the prince. But this time she suddenly smiled, and said: “I’ve dreamt of you too, of your castle, your family, your father’s riches. But most importantly, I have seen how you have treated the people and creatures around you. I have been cursed by an evil witch to stand between these stones until the right person comes along to marry me. Your stepbrother came too and proposed to me, but he is an evil man and I would never marry him. You have proven yourself a kind and thoughtful person, however, so I will gladly marry you.” The prince was surprised by this statement; his stepbrother had been his best friend his whole life! He realised that this could not be true, however, as his stepbrother had hurried to get to the princess before the prince. When the princess sat down on the left stone, the weather turned finer and more comfortable than ever before, and all the animals in the forest came to see who the lucky guy was to marry their princess. Two wild horses offered to give them a ride home to his castle.

One month later, the happy couple was to get married. All their loved ones, including the rabbit, the bear, and the moose, were invited, and all were offered blackberries. The prince’s stepbrother, however, was captured and put in the dungeon of the castle where he had to spend this joyous day. The rabbit, the bear, and the moose all moved into the castle gardens and grew their blackberries there. And then they all lived happily ever after. Except for the evil stepbrother, of course.

The Blisters! (age ca. 14, Norwegian)

Once upon a time there was a girl named Chiru. She was going on a trip to the mountains at *mountain chain name* with her adoring class. She was really looking forward to it, not knowing how it was going to end up.

The day came, they were going to spend five lovely days on the mountain! The bus drive up took some hours, so Chiru and her friend Helen bothered everyone on the bus by taking pictures of them. They got some really nasty ones too!

The long walk had started. It wasn’t two hours, like Chiru had heard, it was five! It started to rain too (there’s a smiley face next to this for some reason, I’m assuming it was sarcastic :)). When they had walked for about half an hour, she took off her shoes and had a look at them. Both of her feet had already gotten blisters! She knew she had a habit for getting blisters, but this fast?? She put some bandages on and they kept walking.

As the day went on, so did the blisters. More and more kept popping up and at the end of the day, her feet did NOT look good.

*Math teacher* tried to spray some kind of “blister spray” on her feet, that was supposedly so much better than ordinary bandages. Better my butt (another smiley here :)) (the teacher has written a :O next to it, haha). That spray got off quicker than *the teacher for this essay* gets out of the classroom after class! (maybe this was what he wrote the :O for actually). After they had bandaged her whole feet, they started walking. And walking. Aaaaaand walking. Chiru was suffering, and Lauren (another friend I apparently didn’t feel like introducing to the story) heard a lot of complaints. Chiru was so mad at her blisters that when they managed to walk an hour the wrong way, and then turn, and walk an hour back, Chiru had a rage attack at *math teacher* (rage attack, haha). Luckily he wasn’t mad, or else Chiru would have gotten even worse math grades (a smiley face from the teacher here).

The next day, guess what, it was worse. Poor Chiru, she didn’t get much sleep either. Haha, but that was because she was up all night talking. With her friends of course, she’s not one of the many people in this world who talks to themselves.

At the third day they had to stop a lot because of little, helpless Chiru. None of the stuff they tried worked on her cursed feet. Everyone was sick of Chiru and her constant complaining. But she didn’t care. All she wanted was to get to the bus on the fourth day, and take off her shoes FOREVER.

The fourth day was so much worse than the other days, it was really long! They spent ten and a half hours walking that day! “It’s just down here, and then we’ll see the bus! Ten minutes, people!” *math teacher* yelled. Most of the boys started running, and all of the girls walked kinda slowly down the hill.

Half an hour (!) later they were down, every single one of them complaining. But once they got on the bus and got some soda, I think they were the happiest class on earth (another :) here).

The bus stopped at our apartments at *mountain place*. Both of the other classes were already there. Everyone gagged at Chiru’s blisters. And then, they puked. Just kidding: and then they lived happily ever after!

Bonus: teacher comment at the end: Who lived happily ever after, your feet or your class? Brilliant, Chiru!

The Nightmare (age I have no idea, Norwegian)

It was dark. I was sitting in the backseat of a car that was driving up a small mountain. Further down there was water, a large fjord. Inside the car with me there were four others; Jacob and Jonas, my brothers, sat next to me, and mum and dad sat in the front.

We’d been driving for a while and got close to a large, grey brick house. Suddenly I heard a man talk to me, we were outside the car now, and the car was gone. The man told me: “in seven days, you will die.” He looked like a doctor so I believed him. My dad went towards the large house I had just seen from the car. I was terrified for some reason, it looked like one of the haunted houses in horror movies.

When we knocked on the door, a small, pale man with a hunched back opened the door. Even though he looked creepy, I wasn’t afraid of him, quite the opposite, I thought he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. He opened the door with a false smile and let us in after my dad had explained the situation: our car had disappeared, remember? The house was much smaller from the inside, but there were a lot of stairways. “Do you want anything to eat, or maybe something to drink?” the little man asked. He was probably a butler, I thought. At the second he said that, we were sitting at a large table with gross food in front of us. No one said anything, we all probably just thought that we wanted to go home. I was thinking how horrible it was to be in a house with such awful food. We started running towards the door at the same time, but it was locked. I turned around, a huge, ugly, vampire-like creature was running towards us! That’s when I panicked, and apparently, everyone else did too, because we all ran in different directions away from the creature. This… monster… ran after Jacob first. “Guess he likes small kids, tee hee” I laughed. It was obvious the house was doing something to all of us.

Jacob was gone, probably killed by that vampire creature. I was lying under one of the stairways, hiding and looking for my other family members. After a few minutes, I heard my mum scream. “Mum just got killed too!” I thought. No, there she was, in one piece, dragging herself across the hallway right by the stairs. Actually, she didn’t look completely normal, now that I had a good look. Not only was she dragging herself along, she looked pale, and she was drooling too! Just like the butler… “Vampires, and now… zombies?” I thought, and watched my mother go by the stairs and fade out of sight.

It was completely silent in the house now, I could only hear myself breathing. I walked slowly out from behind the stairs and went upstairs. “No one here either,” I thought and went onwards and ended up in a bathroom. There was a clown standing in the shower, but I didn’t really think about that and just kept moving and went back downstairs. This time there wasn’t a hiding space under the stairs I had been, there was another stairway that went further down. I could see there was a basement down there. I hid under the stairs in that basement for about half an hour or so, but then suddenly my dad appeared. We smiled to each other, but then dad gave me a blowing kiss, and someone came down the stairs.

“BAM BAM BAM,” I heard from above me, when the monster appeared and walked downstairs, and my dad just stood there. I wanted to go out there to him, but I was too scared I’d be seen. They kept eye contact the whole time they were going towards each other, and I was wondering what my dad’s plan was.

Now they were standing in front of each other, and the vampire did not look happy. Suddenly, my dad grabbed him and the vampire did the same. It looked like the vampire was going to bite my dad, like real vampires do. I knew dad wasn’t strong enough to overcome the vampire by himself. His teeth got closer and closer to my dad, and there was nothing I could do. That was when the vampire grabbed my dad even harder and… kissed him? My dad was surprised at first, but then he turned paler and paler and started to drool. I realised I was crying and tried to run up the stairs. The vampire followed me, but in all my panic I forgot that the vampire had locked the door. The butler was in front of the door though, he smiled, and suddenly opened the door for me! I ran towards the exit and when I was going through the door, I ran hard into a door that had suddenly appeared. “Just kidding!” I heard the butler scream in laughter. Everyone in the house appeared before me as I turned around; the vampire, my dad, the butler, my mum, and Jacob. I screamed: “You’re my family, you can’t do this to me!” Suddenly Jonas and the “doctor” from earlier showed up next to my dad, and at the same time they all recited “Seven days have passed, now you will die.”

I woke up, It was just a dream.

Part B (age ca. 14, English)

She was running faster and faster, wasn’t he supposed to be here by now? She had waited for so long, yet he didn’t come… How could he bail on her now? She stopped for a second to check if the others were still after her. The sound of dogs barking and cars driving as fast as they could through the woods was still there, it was like they were chasing Saddam Hussein or something. She hadn’t done anything wrong, had she? Maybe it was better to just stop, and let them catch her. Then she wouldn’t have to run anymore, she was so tired…

Her name was Jenna, she was 22 years old, she had four dogs and two cats, she loved animals. She didn’t exactly smile at the sound of the barking dogs right now though. If they reached her, I don’t think they were going to lick her in the face or something, no, quite the opposite, bite her in the face maybe? Or leg, so she couldn’t run from the dogs’ owners. That’s why she kept running, while she was looking for her only friend in this place.

When Jenna was told by her boss that she was transferred to a distant island together with her best friend and co-worker, Mark, she was smiling like never before. She was told it was a beautiful place, with sun every day and beaches like the ones she had only seen in movies. But she didn’t get to know the name of the island, the town or even the street she was going to live on before she arrived there. “So you won’t leak information”, she was told. It was actually quite normal in the profession she was in. She had run off and told Mark, he wasn’t even half as excited as Jenna, because he was just getting back in touch with a woman he had been in love with since high school. He was thinking of asking his boss to stay and have them send someone else, but felt like he had to protect Jenna, as this journey could get dangerous.

There was still no sign of Mark. “Maybe he’s dead, just like I’m going to be in a few seconds…” she thought to herself. She suddenly stopped, she gave up. She sat down on a big rock and listened for the others coming closer. But wait. What? It was quiet. Awfully quiet! Maybe they gave up too! Oh, it was so good to be alive! Maybe Mark is around here somewhere too. Jenna started looking for him again, but she didn’t move from the rock she was sitting on, she was too tired. She started shaking, no, actually, the rock started shaking. She jumped off and thought she had accidentally sat on a bear or something. The large thing stood up and turned slowly around while stretching its arms high up in the sky. She couldn’t see its face because of all the dirt all over this enormous creature. “Jenna, is that you? I see you’ve lost some weight, girl!” the thing said. She suddenly realised it was Mark! Mark had disguised himself as a… rock… Yeah, well, he was big. “Oh my God, I thought I’d lost you! Oh, Jenna, Jenna, Jenna!” he shouted, while hugging Jenna like… Well, like they hadn’t seen each other for a very long time, which they hadn’t.

The others had been chasing Mark too, but just far enough to make him stay out for a while, so that they could finish their work without interruptions. But then a girl had come, from the same group as Mark, and destroyed their whole machine. The others hadn’t known who was trying to disrupt their work, but the initials of the group were “S.T.F”. The machine they had spent years building fell apart, and so did the building it was in. The survivors got their orders fast: “Follow and kill that girl!” That’s why Jenna had all those people after her. Poor Mark, he didn’t find his way back to the factory to protect Jenna, and while he was looking for it, some guys with guns and rifles came, so he had disguised himself as a rock. Of course, he then managed to fall asleep, and about two hours later, Jenna was there, sitting on him. What a coincidence!

S.T.F. stands for “Stop Turkey Frying”. Jenna and Mark had a job that was mainly to destroy all turkey frying machines in the world. It wasn’t easy, but the job had to be done. The island they were on was Hawaii, and on this island, the Hawaiians had several large turkey farms, and even more turkey frying machines. This had to be stopped! The machine Jenna had blown up was the third of around twelve machines on the island. Their mission wasn’t over yet, but they would make it, like the vegetarians they were, Jenna and Mark were determined to destroy all the turkey frying machines in the world.

Free at last (age ca. 14, Norwegian)

Once upon a time, there was a boy. The boy’s name was Fomfil. Fomfil lived with his mother next to Fairywood and Fairysea. It was a beautiful, calm place. A bit lonely for them at times, perhaps. His father, Fomfal (who Fomfil was named after), was out at sea and was only home during the coldest winters.

One day when Fomfil was going into Fairywood to find some berries and firewood, something strange happened:

Fomfil was humming his usual, pleasant song. He had made it up all by himself, and was quite proud of it. He saw some good-looking berry bushes and walked towards them. He noticed he wasn’t the only one there, and wanted to say hi. “Hi there! Not often I meet...” but the stranger ran off and disappeared as quickly as he had arrived. Fomfil started chasing him, he was quite a curious fellow, you see, though it might not have been such a good idea. Fomfil was lost! “Oh no, oh no, oh no! This can’t be good!” he mumbled as he walked further on. The creature was completely gone.

After he had walked for another two stone-throws or so, he came upon some deer. They were incredibly stunning. “Hi, do you know where I am?” Fomfil smiled. “Walk that way and mid-half up that hill,” one of the deer said. “Uh, OK, but what hill?” Fomfil quietly asked, as the deer looked a bit angry. “Walk that way and mid-half up that hill,” another deer replied. “Where do I end up then?” Fomfil asked, feeling a bit annoyed. “WALK THAT WAY, and mid-half UP THAT HILL!” the third deer shouted. Fomfil became frightened, and thought their eyes looked sinister somehow. He walked the way they told him to, feeling confused.

After he had walked past a  Foms who gave him a flask with some sort of gooey liquid in it, and a centaur playing taxi, Fomfil saw the stranger again! He chased him once more as his curiosity got the best of him. He walked slower and slower, he had lost him again. He heard a lot of rustling behind him, but he figured it was just the annoying centaur again. Suddenly a “Rakabimro” showed up, a very rare and unique little thing that Fomfil had always thought was only a myth. “Hellåååå, so, why are you here, eh?” the Rakabimro said excitedly. “I’ve gotten myself lost chasing some weird creature and… hey, was it you I saw?” Fomfil asked. “Iiiiiiiiii’m Rakas, and Iiiiiiiiiiiiii’m NOT who you saw!” the creature said. “Ok, so I guess I’ll just move along then….?” Fomfil said, as Rakas looked at him strangely. “So, what are ya? A gnome?” he asked. “No! I’m half human!” Fomfil answered. “And half gnome?” Rakas asked. “No! Half human and half dwarf!” Fomfil answered. “Oooooh, is that why you’re so hairy?” Rakas asked.

That’s right, Fomfil really was. His father was a dwarf, and his mother was a human, and he was quite hairy. Fomfil started walking, he was a bit offended, but Rakas wouldn’t stop following him. “By the way, I think the stranger you saw earlier was a Grompirak…” Rakas said carefully. A Grompirak was one of the most frightful things in all of Fairywood. Everyone from Fomses to Trolls were scared of them. They were small, but deadly! Fomfil liked to watch TV, and ninjas reminded him of Grompiraks.

Their conversation was interrupted by rustling noises. This was definitely not the taxi-centaur. There were many surrounding them, he could tell, but he couldn’t see anyone. Fomfil was about to run, but Rakas held him back. Suddenly, a net and some kind of liquid came over them, and everything went black.

Fomfil woke from Rakas shaking him. “Where are we? Are you friends with these people? Why did you stop me from running?” Fomfil spoke fast and loudly, he was extremely annoyed. Rakas told him it was useless to run from them. It was the Grompiraks!

Fomfil and Rakas were in a cage high up in a tree, they were stuck there for days. They found out that the Grompiraks had some trouble with someone in Fairywood. They couldn’t hear with who or what kind of trouble it was. The Grompiraks were actually kind of nice. And they were so tiny! Rakas had begun teasing one of them for its size, called it a dwarf. Fomfil didn’t like that. One day Fomfil and Rakas were literally dragged into a hut by many Grompiraks. Fomfil assumed the Grompirak in front of them was the leader, because he had just said he was the leader. His name was Gromp. “Well, we’ve just heard from one of our spies that the Daars are planning an attack against us. We highly recommend you two to not get involved in this, so we will let you go. You will have to go south-west right away, so you don’t run into the Daars,” Gromp said. “But… the Daars? The DEER? The DEER are attacking you? Haha, I don’t believe it!” Fomfil laughed.

But the deer were planning exactly that. Fomfil suddenly remembered the look in the eyes of the deer he had met the other day. Something sinister. The deer were actually trying to lure Fomfil into their camp to take him as prisoner the day they had given him directions. One of the Grompiraks had tried (and succeeded) in getting Fomfil’s attention so he wouldn’t go that way. Why they captured him, you ask? There wasn’t much use in trying to get him to believe that the cute, pretty deer were actually evil. But that they were, and Fomfil just had to believe them! But for now, they had to leave!

“Free at last!” Rakas shouted, once they had left the Grompirak camp. “Free at last…” Fomfil thought, “Free? What about the Grompiraks, they’re not going to be free after this battle!” “Rakas, we have to help them!” Fomfil exclaimed. Fomfil explained to Rakas what he thought was going to happen, and dragged him back to the Grompirak camp.

There they were: the deer! By pure reflex, Fomfil started throwing rocks at them. Not a good idea, they came after him and Rakas instead of the Grompiraks! Rakas said he would divert their attention to him so Fomfil could run to the Grompiraks and warn them, and Fomfil ran! Fomfil ran and he ran, but he seemed to never get any closer to the camp. He tripped on a rock, and hurt himself a bit. He was all right, and noticed he was sitting right next to a bush. A berry bush! He was back to where he had first seen one of the Grompiraks! From there, Fomfil could easily find his way, except he didn’t. He decided to take a break, and go home and tell his mother the whole story.

He arrived home. His mother was there, and he started to tell his tale. His mother almost didn’t believe him, even though she had always said everything was possible in Fairywood. What she didn’t believe was the fact that the deer were evil. No wonder. Once they started looking for the Grompiraks again, they found no traces of them.

A few weeks later, Fomfil had left the whole ordeal behind him, he almost thought the whole thing was a dream, but every time he went back to the berry bush to gather berries, he thought: “I wonder what’s happening in there right now...” That’s when he saw a tiny little guy run past him, stop, wink at him, and run off.

My Story (age ca. 13, English)

“Then it’s settled, we take them there tomorrow.” I can’t believe it! They are taking us to an island far away from here. Tomorrow! “Us” means me and the other convicts. I was drunk and tried to break into the castle… Not the brightest idea. I got caught, obviously. So now I’m stuck here. Well, I’ll have to pack now.

The next day on the ship was awful, it still is. We have to do everything! I don’t know why they even have a crew. Finally the day arrived. I got off the ship, and breathed in the air of freedom! Or not… They made me work even harder than on the ship! I realised it would be this way forever.

One day, a friend of mine came to me and asked if I wanted to try to escape. I did indeed want to escape. We started planning for it every food break. After a couple of weeks we were ready. I was going to get the attention of the guards, and then Mike (my friend) would knock them down and then we were going to take the ship home! Best idea ever. But then the guards took me to a place I had never been before. It was a huge cave. Then they left me there with some other guards. I don’t know what happened to Mike and the others, but I guess they made it out, because I heard a guard saying “He must stay here, we can’t let anyone else escape!” So I was here. For a long time.

Much later, when I was out for a walk with one of the guards I asked if we could go up on the hill nearby. We did. And I saw… a ship! The ship Mike stole! I noticed the guard wasn’t looking in that direction so we went quickly down again, and after a while I heard someone screaming and some shooting. Mike came to rescue me! We ran down the mountain where the work camp was at, and to the ship. They saved many others too. We even managed to control the ship. But on the way home, a storm came. Many died. Mike said I had to get as far up as I could. It wasn’t easy with all the wind. “Look for an island or something!” Mike shouted. There was none. Suddenly I slipped, and fell, after a few seconds I passed out.

“Wake up! Wake up!” someone said. I opened my eyes. It was sunny. Mike and some others were standing around me. “Finally!” said Mike, “we’re here!” We were home! I ran to my sister’s home as fast as I could. She opened the door and I hugged her.

I live here for now. Even though my sister has a husband and many, many children. It’s good to be back though, I guess.

My pet (age I don’t know, must have been young, English)

My dog’s name is Luna. She’s named after the moon. She’s ten months old now. She is an English Setter.

One day when I was at school, it happened something awful (something awful happened). I called my mum after school to ask her something and then she told me… Luna was overdrived (had been run over by a car, haha)! I started crying and mum picked me up. When I saw Luna I was so releaved (relieved). I pictured her with bandages and stuff, but she didn’t have any. Her right sholder (shoulder) was very injured though. But now she is all right again. Just crazy. As usual.

At the vet’s (age ca. 13, English)

At the vet’s Tinker was uncomfortable. He had been drugged, so he was calm. But when the drugs didn’t work anymore, Tinker barked, so much that he slipped. The vet came and called for more help, but Tinker growled. She asked some of the others there to help, and they did. And then they fixed Tinker. He was as good as new! They called the owners and the owners came to get him. Later, when Tinker was home, he was very nice. He didn’t growl, he was happy all the time. I wonder what they did to him :)

My Holiday in Scotland (age ca. 13, English)

It all started with my friend Maria inviting me to Scotland with her for five days. Of course, I said yes, and about a month later we were on the plane. “I hope we’ll see Nessie!” Maria said. She looked really excited. “I don’t want to ruin it for you, but I don’t think we will…” I answered. “Yeah, you’re right…” she answered. Now I really had ruined it all for her.

Some days later, after we had been in Glasgow and Edinburgh, we were on our way to Loch Ness. Maria looked sad. I tried to cheer her up, but she didn’t seem to care. The bus trip there was really boring and long. Finally, we arrived at the lake. We got out of the bus, and started walking towards some ruins we saw. Maria stopped by one of the ruin walls and asked “Can we just sit here for a bit?” I said that was okay, and jumped up on the wall.

We just sat there. No one talked. Then suddenly I thought I saw something in the water. I thought “That can’t be…” The thing disappeared. There it was again! It was nighttime now, so I took the flashlight out of my bag and ran towards the water. Maria ran after me screaming “What are you doing?!” I have no idea what I was thinking, but I actually jumped into the water. I ended up underwater for a while, and suddenly I ran out of air. I think I fainted.

The next thing I remember was lying on something. A rock. I opened my eyes, and saw Maria, and… Nessie? “Nessie here saved you from drowning!” Maria said happily. “Uh, thanks..?” I said, wondering if I was dreaming. I wasn’t, apparently. Nessie turned around and went back into the lake. “Why did she leave so quickly?” I wondered. “Quickly? You were knocked out for two hours!” Maria answered. “Let’s go home and get dry.” We did. And the next day we went home. What a trip.

The Guilt (age ca. 14, English)

“Where am I? Oh my God, maybe this is like in that movie… Scary Movie 4! I’ve been kidnapped by aliens who invaded earth, and now I have to cut off my legs to get out! Aaaa… I don’t really wanna do that.”

“Who the hell are you talking to?” shouted a stranger to me from across the room.

He looked like he was around 30-35 years old, and had a lot of facial hair. I guess he had been here a long time. “Can’t you hear? Who are you? Who are you talking to? Are you here to save me?” shouted the stranger desperately. “No need to yell, man, I’m deaf. Could you use your lips more when you talk, so I can read them? Please, explain to me what’s happening here” I answered.

He told me that when the third world war came to Wisconsin, he and his wife were hiding in a hut in the woods. But It seems like the Russian soldiers found them, because when he looked out the window one day, he suddenly blacked out, and woke up here with a headache.

He had a note on his leg, with the words: “To get out, you’ll have to reach the button over there! Muahahahaha!” Not easy, it was far away from us… But then, a hatch in the ceiling opened, and a man fell down it. It was actually the guy from the Coca Cola Light commercial. You know, the one where he just can’t resist pushing the button?

The two men stood quietly for a while, and hushed me when I tried to speak. I think they were listening to something. Crap, it’s not cool being deaf. All I could feel was the dark bass from the sound.

After a while, they both smiled and the Coca Cola guy walked across the floor, to push the button. The hairy guy explained that a voice had said “Dammit, we’re out of chains! Don’t you dare push that button, kid! We’ll make you pay!” Suddenly, as the guy pushed the button, he fell down a hole in the floor that had opened.

Our chains opened too, we were free! Yeah, you go, coke guy! Then the stranger told me he had heard a scream. “I think he’s dead,” I saw the stranger say sadly. “Also, I can’t join you on the way out… Just press the anarchy star on the toilet over there, then you’ll get out. I saw a mean guy do it a long time ago, but he wouldn’t help me. After a few weeks, I just cut my legs off, to get the chains off. But now I can’t walk, so... I think I’ll stay…” he added.

Even though I’m deaf, for a second, even I could hear the deathly silence. Then I pressed the star, and got sucked out of the room in some kind of tube, and ended up on the outside of a farm. I walked for a while, then, suddenly, I felt like the mean guy who wouldn’t help Mr. Hairy.

I fell to the ground. I couldn’t bear the guilt. I just kept lying there, on the grass. I died on that grass.

Where are we? (age ca. 14, English)

Today’s Midsummer Night. I don’t really care. I’m going to visit Sarah tonight, for a sleepover. I’m much more looking forward to that.

Well, I’m here now. There’s just one problem. Sarah’s family is going to some kind of party to celebrate Midsummer Night, and they said we have to come too! “Because of all the drunk people roaming about,” her mum said. We had no choice.

Now we’re out in the boat. I like this boat. It’s so quiet and calm. You see, I’m not so keen on the water under, next to and all around the boat. So I like to lay on my back, watching the stars. Well, right now there are no stars, only fog. I wish I’d just gone home.

“We’re here!” Sarah’s dad shouted, so all of us could see that we were in fact here. I barely got off the boat, but I made it on to the island! We all went up to watch the bonfire. Actually, it was kind of nice, looking at the only light in this thick fog. Sarah started walking away from the bonfire. I followed. “Where are we going?” I asked. “Away from the adults, of course,” Sarah answered. A sound came from the bushes. “Oh my God, what was that?” I was terrified. It wasn’t Sarah, so who could it be out here watching us, maybe even following us? Sarah looked like she was scared too, but I think she was trying to hide it.

It was getting really dark now. I wanted to go back to the bonfire and the adults, but Sarah “wasn’t scared.” After a while I had forgotten about the sounds, and was now concentrating on following Sarah. She sat down for a while and said “Let’s sit here.” I don’t know why she wanted to sit exactly there. “Oh, I forgot. My cell phone has a flashlight!” she said, and turned the little flashlight on. It helped. “Why are we here, Sarah?” I wondered. “Haven’t you heard? They say there’s a ghost on this side of the island. Walking around. He drowned himself, you know?” Sarah said spookily. Then, I could hear the sounds from earlier again! Sarah was screaming, running around in a circle. I just sat there, looking for the source of the sounds. A boy came out of the bushes. He said he had followed us for a while. We said we were looking for a ghost. The boy didn’t answer, and started talking about the weather. “Do you think he’s scared?” Sarah whispered. “I don’t know, why?” I whispered back. Sarah wanted to scare him, for some reason. I didn’t. So I started discussing the weather with him. His name was Edward. He seemed very keen on discussing the weather.

We didn’t notice for a while, that Sarah was gone! I thought she was hiding to jump out and scare us, but after a while, we started looking for her. I was getting worried. We couldn’t find her anywhere. “Edward, let’s go… this way?” I said, but Edward wasn’t there anymore. I looked everywhere. Well, I think I did, it was dark, but they were just… gone! Suddenly, I saw a bright light! I thought it was Sarah’s cell phone, but it was the adults who were looking for us.

I told them what had happened. They started looking for Sarah, but no one had heard of any Edward. They told me to go wait on the boat.

It wasn’t exactly pleasant, just waiting. Not just because I had to be on a boat, but knowing that Sarah was missing. The adults would find her, I was sure. Five minutes seemed like an eternity. I waited for ten minutes, so after the two eternities, the adults came back, and told me they had found her. With a flesh wound on her arm, and she was in shock.

Some days later I visited her at the hospital. She told me that after meeting Edward, I turned to look up to the sky, ‘cause we were talking about the weather, and Edward had pointed at Sarah, and suddenly she was in another place. She was captured in a sort of bush, she said, she tried to get out, but the bush was cutting into her skin every time she moved. She heard voices, and started screaming for help. Next thing she knew, she was with her parents. She had been in shock, because she had seen something. Something horrible. She never told me what.

A Day in Frankie’s Life (age ca. 14, English)

He woke up on the floor. You probably think he fell down from his bed during the night. No. He didn’t have a bed, you see. His family was poor. Really poor. But their dad worked hard every day, often even on Sundays, so they could have a little food on the table. Frankie was supposed to go to school. But he couldn’t afford to. The family owed the state so much money that they kicked their children out of school, and they also gave their dad a crap job.

Frankie was on the playground. He was babysitting his brothers again. He was thinking of the time when he got a bag of fruit from the Italian guy down the street. Suddenly, he saw the Italian guy’s head through the playground fence. Frankie wondered how he was going to get his head out again. He called Frankie. “Hey! Frankie!” How did he know his name? “I’ve got a suggestion to make! How about you babysit my daughter some days a week. You’ll get paid. Please?” Of course, Frankie said yes, finally he could help his family!

Now, you might think this is going to end badly, but the Italian guy was rich, so Frankie actually got 100 dollars a day. Frankie was so happy. So was the family. Now they could have food on the table every day!

A Bad Day (age ca. 14, English)

One day, Charlotte was going on a trip with her class. It was a rainy day, and she’d love to stay home instead. But she couldn’t, so she didn’t. When she arrived at school, her friends totally ignored her. She said hi and asked them why, but they said it was nothing. On the bus she sat alone. Everyone totally ignored her all the time. She was really confused, because she didn’t think she had done anything wrong. She walked alone the entire day. Finally, the trip was over, she could go home! When she did, she wrote a song. She felt really depressed, so she figured writing a song would help.

The next day, everything was back to normal again. Charlotte asked one of her friends about the day before. She mumbled something weird. “What?” Charlotte asked. “We heard some rumours about you… You don’t want to know, believe me…” her friend answered. “But we all know they’re not true now!” she smiled. She was right, Charlotte didn’t want to know.

That day she had a friend at her house. Her friend read the song text Charlotte had written. “Charlotte, this is wonderful! Do you have a melody?” she asked, really excited. Charlotte did have a melody. They sent it in to a record company, just for fun.

Some weeks later, they watched MTV. “Oh my God, that’s your song!” her friend screamed. They had mixed the song a bit, not much. So just for your information, it wasn’t Daniel Powter who wrote “Bad Day” :P (yes, I included smileys in my essays back then, I had a “I’m so random!” phase).

How well do you know your best friend?

I was tagged by @raindrop-rouge, and will be answering about her! <3 Thanks for your answers, you’re pretty much spot on! :D Both our answers will be thoroughly discussed when I’ve posted this, of course! 1. What is your best friend’s dream job, and why? I’m pretty sure her dream job is to be an actress, she’s also said she really wants a job that pays enough for her to have a huge, modern apartment (on the top floor?) ;D Her current job should lead to that eventually!

2. What is their biggest pet peeve, and why do you think that is?

People walking slowly! Probably because she’s always rushin’ and being super productive!

3. What is their favourite TV series (live action)?

Live action... I’m not sure! She’s been watching Dancing with the Stars a lot lately! I literally can’t think of anything. Penny Dreadful? Once Upon a Time, hahaha.

4. What is their favourite TV series (animated)?

I’m gonna say Shingeki no Kyojin! Though she’s also talked a lot about Yuri on Ice, Free, and uhhh, some volleyball anime, I think? But I’m preeeeetty sure #1 is Shingeki no Kyojin!

5. What does your best friend value most in life, and why? (Do you think they value most what they say they do, or something else?)

She really values her brother, more than anyone I’ve ever known cares about their siblings, which is super cute :D She wants for just enough to be comfortable in life (which goes against her wish to have a huge apartment, I know, that’s more like a dream if she does get enough money for it, I think, not something she would value higher than her friends and family). Basically she wants to be independent.

6. How would you describe their style, and how would they describe it?

She has a dark, sort of gothic style. But she mixes it with cute stuff like colourful bows! I think she’d agree with me on that description. I hope :P

7. If you were to decorate a room for your best friend, what would it look like, and why?

It would be fuuuuuull of blankets and pillows and comfy things! A desk and some shelves for writing and reading. The walls would be decorated with pictures and other memories of her friends and her travels. And there would be tons of candles! Also plenty of mugs for tea and mugcakes ;D (did I just describe your apartment, I did, didn’t I)

8. What do you think their best quality is?

She’s by far the most hard-working person I’ve ever met, it’s amazing! She’s also extremely open-minded, which is always a great quality to have these days. She’s very loyal to her friends, and always has time for them. I also obviously love her sense of humour, otherwise no one would laugh at my lame jokes! I can’t pick, why did I even include this question, haha -.-

9. What does your best friend think their best quality is? Would they agree with you?

Hmm... She’d probably agree with me that she’s hard-working. I think she also knows she’s open-minded. She would probably also agree that she’s loyal and makes time for her friends. She’s always said she’s not funny though, even though I think she’s hilarious, so she might not agree with me on that one. All in all, I think (or hope) she agrees with me :D

10. What is your best friend’s favourite book (or book series)?

I want to say Captive Prince, she went crazy about that series! I really want to read it because of how she described it. She’s also always said she loves the book... I can’t remember the title, was it “A Lady in Captivity”? I bought it online to read it, but I think I got the wrong book (I’ve forgotten to ask you about that, @raindrop-rouge, haha).

11. What do you have in common with your best friend?

We’re both very loyal to our friends. We also value fairness, like, we always shared responsibilities when we lived together, and we always want to make sure either one doesn’t pay more than the other for things. I think we have the same sense of humour, though she might say mine is more dry, haha (she laughs though sooooooo). We both love chilling together, watching movies or shows, or singing, and she even plays video games with me! We do stupid tests (like this one) together, basically, we love doing NOTHING AT ALL together! We both loooove travelling. We both love reading (and also writing, though she writes like 323503040 times more than I do). We both love cats (and my dogs ;D).

Unlike you, @raindrop-rouge, I think we actually have a lot in common, haha :D Though I understand why your answer was shorter, if we’re talking interests, then, honestly, we’re quite different! You’re super into some anime and manga that I only really know through you (though I do like them), and I’m super into movies, TV series and games that you probably only know (or like) through me!

Also, omg, WE BOTH LOVE JAPAN, how did we not immediately think of that.

12. How did you meet, and what was your first impression of your best friend?

As @raindrop-rouge said, we met the first day of uni in England, I had a yellow piece of paper that she wanted to know where I got, and she was munching on an apple. I asked if she wanted to sit together (which is very unlike me, I’m never that “brave”, LUCKY FOR US I DECIDED TO BE BRAVE THAT DAY). I remember always saving a seat for her in Japanese class :D Oh, and my first impression was that she was very nice for coming up and talking to me and sitting with me, she was just very open and kind and nonthreatening, it was like I could tell that she wasn’t being fake or anything.

13. What does your best friend spend their free time doing, and why do you think they choose to do what they do?

She reads and writes fan fiction, which I think she does because she really loves the world and characters of her favourite manga/anime, and wants to “spend more time in it”. She watches anime and TV shows, not that many movies (unless I force her to watch my faves haha), because she loves Japan as well as the themes in the shows obviously, and I’m guessing there’s a bit of escapism there as well ;D She also hangs out with or chats with friends quite a lot, that social butterfly!

14. Who is their favourite fictional character, and why?

I’m gonna have to say Levi from Shingeki no Kyojin. I’m not even sure why, I think she likes his personality and how he treats others (probably especially Eren)? I’m such a bad friend I haven’t watched more than about 4 episodes of that :(

15. What’s the first thing you tell other people when you talk about your best friend?

Tbh, I probably start with saying “my best friend is French, and she did Japanese Studies with me, combining it with Law!” I think I usually mention her when someone talks about France, the US, England, Law, or Japanese, haha (which is quite often). Most of the time I quote something she’s said about a topic she knows a lot about, which is often law or France. Any time the future is mentioned, I say I’m gonna live with her as soon as we have the chance.

16. What’s your favourite story about them?

This summer’s trip to France and Spain was by far one of my favourite trips ever! I also loved it when I visited her in Japan, or when she came to visit me. Any time we’ve travelled together, it’s been awesome, she’s the best travel buddy. I also love it when she tells the story of when SHE realised we were close friends. We were cooking and doing the dishes in the kitchen, and I slapped her butt with a dish towel, and that’s when she realised for some reason :D I had apparently realised before that, seeing as I was slapping her butt with a dish towel... Our Norway nights were also amazing, I remember we were doing stuff together all night, even though there were like 10 other people there that we didn’t see like 24/7 like we used to.

17. What’s your least favourite story about them?

Ugh, it was when we went out for Halloween one year, and I’m pretty sure someone spiked her drink (as you can probably tell, it isn’t my least favourite story because of something she did, just something that happened to her). She got really “drunk” (she neeever gets even close to that drunk) and I was so worried every time I took my eyes off her. I ended up staying by her side as much as I could (so like 99% of the night, haha) and we got home safely, I remember being so relieved when we entered our flat!

18. Why do you think you two ended up becoming best friends?

I think it’s because we were both obviously and genuinely just being nice to each other from the very beginning, there was no drama, and no reason to not like each other. For me at least, it was easy to be open and honest with her, and I always enjoyed hanging out with her. After we moved in together we quickly hung out more and more and just had tons of fun, while at the same time sharing responsibilities etc. like I mentioned earlier. Also we have SOOO MANY inside jokes, it’s insane!!! Sometimes we can just look at each other and burst out laughing ‘cause we know exactly what each other is thinking.

19. Would you be honest with your best friend if they were happy doing something, but you think it might end up harming them in the end?

Haha, yes, I’m pretty sure I’ve already done that.

20. Does your best friend play any instruments? Why do you think they chose that instrument?

She used to play the piano, and I think she still remembers some songs? I’m not sure why she chose the piano, either because she loves piano songs, or because her parents signed her up for classes, I’m guessing? Or maybe she knows her fingers are long and slender and perfect for playing the piano!

21. Do you and your best friend have a dream for the future, if so, what is it?

WE ARE GOING TO MOVE IN TOGETHER AGAIN. And we have a lot of places we want to travel to, like Iceland! And we both want a cat, so we might as well get one together when we do move in together. Basically, we want to be happy, and that involves us being together and having pets ;D

22. What is one thing you have always wanted to tell your best friend, but never have?

Hmmm... I know you always say I don’t talk about my feelings, but I’ve never opened up to anyone as I have to you. I tell you to your face that I love you (once every blue moon at least ;P), I have never told anyone else that, especially not more than once! So... I feel like at some point during our relationship I’ve probably told you all you should know, but those times might be far apart, so you should know that I will always love you no matter what, and.... actions speak louder than words? At least, I hope the way I act shows you better how I feel than what I say. (torturing myself by including this question and making me talk about feels)

23. What do you think your best friend’s life will be like 10 years from now?

She will probably be queen of the world or something with how hard she’s working! But seriously, she is going to have exactly the life she wants, because she’s worked hard for that to be possible, and because she’s smart and strong enough to make that happen. Hopefully for me that life will include us living together like our dream for the future.

24. What song makes you think of your best friend?

She’s gonna hate me for this, but “Love Hurts” by Nazareth, hahaha (I used to either play that or sing it just to annoy her). As well as all of our standard karaoke songs, and Just Dance songs. “A Whole New World”, ooo, and also “Poor Unfortunate Souls”, ‘cause you own that song!

25. Just to end on a mean note, what’s your best friend’s worst personality trait? (Be honest now, guys, none of that “they’re just too kind” bullshit)

WHY DID I INCLUDE THESE QUESTIONS KNOWING I WOULD HAVE TO ANSWER THEM MYSELF?! OK, I think I’ve told her this before, and I KNOW I’ve made fun of her for it, but I think it might have to be the way she kind of acts arrogant sometimes, haha. It’s not even bad (she doesn’t have bad traits!!!), but sometimes she acts or talks like she doesn’t have time for whatever some other person talks about or does. I’m pretty sure 99% of the time she’s joking, but once in a while she sounds a bit like a diva, haha, I’m sorry!!!
