Hi! I love your blog!! So feel free to ignore this, but I was wondering if you had any advice for someone who doesn't have the strongest singing voice but wants to try and get into theatre in highschool? Again, feel free to ignore and have a wonderful day!

Embrace singing with strong character choices and lots of emotion. For a LOT of musicals, that will work just as well as being able to sing amazingly. As a director, I’m more interested in a strong actor who can carry a tune sufficiently than a strong singer who can only kind of emote (though, of course, that can vary by director).

I also recommend proving yourself in straight plays (non-musical plays). Prove your acting chops, but also show that you’re great to work with. A good musical director can help you sound better in a song; a director cannot change whether you’re punctual, learn your lines, or take notes well. And an enthusiastic hard worker will ALWAYS go far in a good high school theatre program.
