As protests start ramping up and violence escalates please remember:

DO NOT PUT MILK IN YOUR EYES FOR PEPPER SPRAY OR TEAR GAS.

It can and will cause infection due to bacteria. Flush with water, distilled if possible, and never EVER wear contact lenses to protests where there may be police retaliation.

Please reblog. It may save someone's sight.

I'm going to either find or make my own post about this but I'm a street medic, I was trained by the Black Rose organization medical branch during Occupy and have since done my own research with papers written for and by the cops and military about treating chemical agent exposure. this is correct, please do not use milk. I'm not sure about distilled water because I haven't seen it used in any papers or ok the ground, but my suspicion is that while it is probably not harmful, the osmotic qualities of distilled water may hurt or cause contact damage to the mucus membranes of the eyes. in addition, riot control chemicals are mostly designed to be water-activated and plain water will make the exposure sites hurt worse with minimal benefit besides flushing out any particles that aren't glued on with the oil medium they use for these agents.

in at least one study, the research on tear gas and pepper spray exposure showed that plain water was so painful that most cops who volunteered to be test subjects for treatment trials refused to use it, opting instead to just wait until they could shower or for the chemicals to degrade on their own. this is a pretty important indicator of both cops being mega pussies, and that plain water isn't very effective at treating riot control chemical injuries.

the substance that tested best in multiple trials was sterile buffered saline solution. in other words, the same stuff that comes in the squirt bottles for cleaning your contact lenses. this is a useful tool to carry into a protest because the squirt bottle makes it easy to direct the flow of water over the surface of the eyeball. trials also showed that putting this solution into your eyes prior to exposure cut down on discomfort quite a bit. in practice, this looks like putting in some clean eye drops from the drug store before you are exposed to riot weapons.

remember, if you are injured in a protest, call "medic!" out loud and street medics will find you. this has been standard protest practice for decades.

onions and milk and vinegar should not go in your eyes. I've seen all three recommended for tear gas treatment and I do not think they are a good idea or that they will work. stick to sterile saline or LAW (liquid antacid + water).

consider carrying an osha-approved eyewash bottle for easier application

also, please wear a helmet and buy a gas mask

Just to reiterate: prevention is ideal. Full-face respirator masks are great. Iโ€™ve literally walked through clouds of tear gas with one on & was able to help people who didnt have masks on (& who were therefore blinded) get to safety.

Another benefit of a full-face mask w/ rubber gasket seal is that it more fully protects your eyes from pepper spray, whereas most safety goggles and any sunglasses have space on the sides where pepper spray gel or liquid can get in.

Ideally you want to get a mask that is also rated for impact resistance. Lots of people lost eyes from 40mm rounds during the 2020 BLM protests.

in my experience, bandanas, kufiyas, surgical masks, and N95 masks offer basically no protection against tear gas or pepper spray.

when i was a kid i had moments of being so fucking diabolical because i realized at some point the best way to leverage power over my family was to do shit that would make everybody late

our house was in the middle of nowhere surrounded by woods so when i decided i didnt want to wear dresses anymore if we were going to some event & my parents insisted i had to wear a dress i would just go hide in the woods. was so committed i almost made us miss a flight once bc my mom packed a dress in my suitcase

i only promised to stop doing this if my parents got me formal boys clothes to wear which eventually they did. i don't feel bad about resorting to violence bc i asked politely and they said no. proud of 10 yr old me for evil annoying lesbian behavior

5th grade was the last time I wore a dress for school pictures. When my parents attempted to force the issue for 6th grade, I climbed onto our roof and pulled the ladder up after me. My dad borrowed the neighbors ladder. As soon as it touched the roof I pulled it up too. By the time I had 3 ladders they were willing to negotiate, and 2 hours late for work.

In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.

I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!

From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!

I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.

The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.

(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)

If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.

The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.

  • insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box
  • add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box
  • delete -> self explanatory
  • on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic

The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.

Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.

โ€œeither take off your cross or put on your underwearโ€ (ukrainian) to say that you canโ€™t have both things at once is my favorite expression to ever exist in any language. i needed to put this out into the world so bad, im finally free.

I'm gonna write some:

"you can't put doors to the countryside" referring to something you cannot control

"to honour which saint?๐Ÿคจ" A response to someone doing such a bizarre thing that you can only assume it's for a very specific god ritual (what my mom says when I'm caught cooking a full meal at 3am)

"my mouth is dryer than Christ's sandals" or nsfw version "dryer than a doll's underwear"

"never say from this water I shan't drink" like never say never.

"to write the dots on the i's" to make a negotiation very clear, point out flaws.

"you have to feed him separately" as in 'this person is a handful'

"it's like throwing daisies to the pigs" wasteful, or useless, unappreciated act

"no one gave you a candle in this burial" you don't have permission to talk/give your opinion

"it's like going to pee and not letting even a drop" pointless, absurd, waste of time

"when the devil is bored he kills flies with his tail" when someone you hate is suspiciously idle and seems innocent (and you KNOW!!! they'll do something)

"my saint went back to the sky" meaning you were so distracted/zoned out that you didn't even notice a saint had descended to help you until it left lmao

"I'm more tied up than a Roman's leg" (refering to Roman knee high sandals) it means you're very busy

Welsh has a couple that absolutely slap, but the best one is:

"There's no use lifting your petticoats after you've pissed" - essentially 'don't cry over spilt milk', what's done is done so you just have to deal with it

I WISH english had an equivalent for "leglo kao budali ลกamar"

Which is basically "it landed/fit/belonged like a slap on an idiot's face" all at once. Like, tfw a meal was so good and satisfying you'd compare it to the satisfaction of slapping an idiot.

Adding some German ones

"er hat ein Backpfeifengesicht" = he has a face made for slapping

"Wenn's dem Esel zu gut geht, geht er auf's Eis tanzen" = If the donkey / idiot is feeling too well, he goes out on the ice to dance

"das psst wie die Faust auf's Auge" = that fits like a fist to the eye - sounds similar to the one @stupidusernamepolicy shared

"Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof" = I only understand train station - I am in a land where I don't understand the language or in a circle of people who speak about stuff I don't understand.

Just saw a TikTok complaining about โ€˜kittenโ€™ as a pet name in fanfiction and while I do agree with their discomfort on that one the comments were FULL of people mentioning all the other common pet names ?? Like honey babe baby sweetheart etc ?? Is your partner just supposed to call you by your name the whole time ????????

God SORRY to drag this out bc Iโ€™m not doing this to like screenshot and expose people for having opinions I donโ€™t like BUT I rounded up the wildest ones I found and blurred the names so no one can be mean to them for it I hope thatโ€™s okay ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Yeah a very common and go-to pet name is actually just one big joke. Everyone was tricking you the whole time!! Pranked <3

I canโ€™t imagine the horrors that this would entailโ€ฆ I donโ€™t wanna hear my name unless youโ€™re reading off a legal document

โ€œTW: British Peopleโ€

Lettuce gives me such a big ick in salad I swear ๐Ÿ˜ญ

WHAT DO U WANT TO BE CALLED ๐Ÿ˜ญ PLEASE YOU HAVE TO GIVE US SOME OPTIONS ๐Ÿ˜ญ

I went through a phase when I was younger, when I found pet names absolutely icky and upsetting, because my only experience with pet names was in the form of adults condescending me.

I preferred my real name, up until college when I had a friends group that assigned everyone a silly nickname as part of a game, which somehow ended up being the only name we called each other. It was then I realized - oh - little nicknames can be loving and affectionate, after all.

After that, I took a leaflet out of Gomez Addams' book, and started calling my partners all manners of ridiculous pet names until some of them stick.

Nowadays it feels strange and weird to call my wife by their name. Icky, even. Their 'real' name is for Serious Topics, or introducing them to strangers. Beyond that, it's 100% darling/dear/babe/honey/lover/waifu/dearest/sunAndstars/My Light/My Love/ etc. etc. etc.

The fact that Microsoft Word has to be a subscription is upsetting. I already paid for it why do I have to pay again

Yes please be mad about it, genuinely- You used to be able to purchase a single disk to install it and use it forever after that initial purchase of one key. It sickens me to see all this stuff which used to be a one time purchase be shunted under a subscription now.

"Why is pirating going back up?!"

This. This is why. People don't mind paying a high price for software if it's only the once, or every 4-5 years.

But having to pay a high price regularly? Especially in the cases where you lose access to your own work if you don't?

That's why people are pirating software.

Itโ€™s possible to buy a non-subscription version of Word; Microsoft just intentionally makes it very difficult to find (and also expensive).

However, I know a guy who knows a guyย website: MS Office Pro for $50. If the link starts going to a Page Not Found, just search the site; they usually have some form of this sale available.ย

Worth noting: while $50 is still more money than $yo-ho-ho, that money is a great way to make VERY clear to Microsoft that we DO want one-time-purchase products, not subscriptions.

My laptop just died. If it can't be fixed and I need to replace it, this post is gonna be a real life saver, because my family has been sharing an old version of Word that came with a limited number of lifetime licenses, and we're fresh out.

Get LibreOffice. It's fully compatible with MS Office, but it's free and open source. You're welcome. :-)

narratively I am a fan of romances that donโ€™t ever actually become romances

I donโ€™t mean in an aromantic life partner way, I mean romantic tension that is never resolved or acted upon for whatever reason but by the end itโ€™s clear that both characters experienced the love of their lives without ever acknowledging it as such. but they know. they know.

this is the post that Iโ€™ve had like five people accuse me of romanticizing fucked up and traumatizing relationships in fiction about btw
