she thinks she has what it takes. sorry—she knows she has what it takes. it isn’t only the features on her face, but the way she can work with them. while nakyung had never taken a step on the acting path, the girl could probably do a good job at it. she’s good at lying and at getting what she wants. it’s more than only using your words. you can’t win someone over with a straight face unless they are as much of a psychopath as you are.

when to bat your eyes; when to turn your head. was she perfect? not yet, but that’s why they keep offering all of these workshops. as a trainee, nakyung has access to a multitude of options to help her achieve her goals. this isn’t limited to singing and dancing, but posing and smiling too. you can’t make it in the idol world without a sprinkle of charisma. she likes to believe she has more than that.

the van takes her to the pink pool cafe. it’s cute but not too cute. it’s more on a playful, adorable spectrum than pure. one of the best feelings is getting dressed up and beautified like a doll in a flash game. she likes to take care of herself on her own. going to professional beauty salons and buying designer clothes isn’t much of a viable option, but no one needs to know that. nakyung makes good use of what little she has. as long as people can believe what she puts on her face, then so be it.

they call for her next. lee nakyung. with a gentle smile on her face, the girl walks to the center of the set. it’s not as easy to predict what the photographer wants. modeling is more than just talking to someone and making them believe it. words can’t save her in pictures. incorporating props is still her go-to. what some people could say it’s difficult gives her comfort. even if it’s only a sprinkle of something different, the girl thinks it’s enough.

#rkpicnic starter for @rknak !
pj shields his eyes from the sun with one hand while clutching a woven picnic basket in the other, the remnants of a smile slowly fading from his face. he’s still not entirely sure whose idea this was; on one hand, nakyung did mention something about wanting to take aesthetic pictures. but it was pj who had volunteered, despite the fact that he was the furthest thing from a photographer. but, hey, how hard can it be? he tries not to overthink any aspect of it, especially whether or not she only brought up the pictures so that he’d invite her. would she? dude, stop.
“this looks like it might be a good spot,” he begins, motioning to the grass in front of them. “you could probably get some good pictures here, right?” pj hesitates, eyeing the girl for a moment as he tries to get a read on her. he has no idea what he’s talking about, but at least he’s trying his best—he just hopes that his best is good enough. “i mean, it’s up to you. because we could keep looking, i really don’t mind either way.” smooth, pj. he needs to work on trusting his own judgment.

her eyes are focused on only one thing: the glistening screen of her phone. while her left arm crosses her chest, nakyung uses her right hand to scroll through the endless feed of social media. it’s a beautiful day out, but that isn’t something the girl usually appreciates. she might take a photo of the view later if she looks up. if not, the best she’d get out of there with is with pictures of the food they brought or something jisung might take of her.

“uh?” a few of his sentences are lost to silence between them. it’s probably the first time she left her phone alone ever since they got there. her eyes fall down to the grass and then back up to the taller. “yeah, this can be a good spot.” nakyung takes a step back. he’s carrying the basket, so she hopes he’ll set up the picnic too. “the sun should hit us nicely once this cloud goes away.” and she finally looks up, squints, then looks back down. “yes, this is pretty.”

*·— in a bit of a stretch

it was a bit of a mistake for him to decide to choose this class. his intention with joining it was really just to have fun and he didn’t think it’d be hard because he was pretty good with stretching. but that’s the thing about yoga. it wasn’t just about stretching. the moment he realized that, it was already too late for him to drop out of the class because he was already IN it. it did have its perks with the calming effect that followed after, but yeonjun’s not exactly calm when he’s doing almost every movement the teacher taught wrong. if anything, he just feels like a clown.
but he tries not to give up just yet. there’s still some determination in him that he’s not willing to give up. he’s never found the idea of quitting a good idea, so he doesn’t plan on doing that now. not to mention, he’d be an idiot to just give up in front of a pretty idol like eclipse’s jennie. trying his best, he follows her instruction with the next yoga pose. he raises his foot to try and hold it, trying his absolute best to hold his balance, only to feel his foot touch someone and a small groan next to him following after it. uh oh. that wasn’t good.
he immediately stands straight and looks over at the person he hit only to see a girl holding onto her nose, also not holding onto the position (he thinks that’s his fault). not wanting to make a big scene, he bows his head slightly. “sorry,” he whispers, hoping not to interrupt the class if he spoke any louder. “i didn’t mean to hit you! it was an accident, i swear. i’ll try not to do it again.” and the emphasis is on try because he’s not the best with balance.

her fingers not so gently massage her nose. the moment she realizes the boy has decided to suddenly speak to her, nakyung drops her hands and stares at him. “well, maybe you should have tried it the first time, no?” she snaps. “i don’t remember this being part of the position.” while her tone is angry, the girl tries her best to keep it down. whoever was standing around them were probably already disturbed and she wouldn’t like for it to reach the participants standing further away or the instructor in front of the entire class.

she starts to raise her leg again to try and get back on the position they should be keeping. but she stumbles still on her feet. god, this made her angry. “and stop looking at me!” nakyung tries to raise her leg one more time (this time successful) and holds onto her foot. her face is now a shade darker of pink due to her being the one to embarrass herself this time “this is how you do it.”

*·— no harmony

ah yes, daniel remembers nakyung. she’s just one of many faces on the mgas that hated him, of course! that’s what he always thought, anyway. he received plenty of criticism, namely on his use of guitar, and if he wasn’t so sensitive, maybe he could see it simply as such: criticism. instead, he took it all too personally, guitar and his band often under fire, yet two of the things he loved most in the world.
it’s a little ironic that they meet again here, in an instrument workshop, and one nakyung is helping to teach, at that. daniel thinks so, anyway. he thinks he’ll have the honor of ignoring nakyung, because he gets the feeling she wants nothing to do with him either (he always did.) clearly it’s the perfect arrangment, but then– it’s not. she greets him with a smile that he doesn’t trust, but daniel is nothing if not fake as hell when he has to be, so he smiles back.
“yeah,” he answers, even though he’s sure she didn’t forget him that easily. he hopes not, anyway, a little stubbornly. “what’s your name again?” he asks, even though he knows the answer to that, too. two can play that game, is all, and if he couldn’t beat her on the mgas, maybe he can beat her here, just for a little while.
“i’m pretty much good, it’s just hard for me to…move my hands the way i need to? it feels different, i don’t know.” he’s probably just babbling now; he probably just should’ve said he didn’t need her help and freed them both from this minor nightmare.

her lips flinch if that’s a thing. a crack on her mask, even if only for a second. before this reunion, she would have classified kang daniel as both harmless and an easy target. at least one of those two things she knows it to be true. had she not made a good hit, he wouldn’t have responded with the same jab. if he will continue with this game is what her interest settles in.

“my name is lee nakyung,” she pronounces it slowly for him to understand. “it was said at the beginning of the class. maybe you weren’t paying attention...” her eyes look down at his hands to see what his problem could be. he has many—she’s sure of it—but one thing at a time. let’s only focus on his piano skills this time, nakyung. “...which would explain this, right?” and another smile.

to explain it to him, she positions her hands at the top of the piano he’s using. she wouldn’t to get close to his own on the keys or even get close to suggesting guiding his hands with hers. uck. the simple thought makes her shiver. “when you play the piano is like your fingers are dancing. are you perhaps any good at dance?” she stops, but then quickly continues, not giving him much time for response. “either way, instead of locked movements as if you were playing a computer game,” nakyung moves her hands as a true gamer would move a mouse, “try doing it with less tension. each of your fingers can move on their own, too.”

@danielxrk

of course, when she hopes that the mgas will come back for her she wishes it to be in the form of a swarm of fans expressing their love. instead, of course, she needs to watch freaking kang daniel walk into her classroom. her classroom! the audacity. nakyung’s acting skills are reserved solely for moments like these. she smiles but towards somewhere else. it’s like ignoring the people you went to middle school with when you spot them at the mall. the problem is, of course, she’s supposed to help all these people with their questions.

eye contact is completely avoided during the first part of the class when it’s mostly the instructor going through what they need to. when it’s time for the students to give it a try themselves, nakyung continues to smile when she’s told to help one specific student. son of a bitch. “hello,” she says with her unfaltering smile. “daniel, right?” she knows, but she chuckles. he knows that she knows. “do you need any help?”

@rkhyojeong

oh, she hopes this gets to hyojeong as much as it gets to her. as far as she’s aware, the girl also mainly focuses on dance, and the challenge of the month was to exactly not do that. if that wasn’t enough, the trainees would have to battle it out based only on their vocals capabilities. nakyung is the type to proudly take fewer lines than others (as long as she can stand center whenever possible). however, the girl also has a very big need to win, which she hasn’t really been feeling confident over if it’s going to happen or not.

“hyojeong,” she starts. “should we add arm movements and things like that to the performance?” of course, not to distract the coaches from their singing abilities. of course not. kt entertainment is more well known for their vocals, the same way nova is for their dancing. she can’t help but pray that next month they’ll get to battle it out on the dance floor. “i feel like it may add to it more than it takes out. especially since the song is a bit more upbeat.”

*·— number two

@rkyoona

she’s been in competitions before and this reads as she’s been in the mgas and she did a pretty good job at it. she had made it to the finals, after all, and the third place was the slot her team got. the main difference between that and now (except for the fact it was a high-quality tv production) is that the trainees were simply bound to singing. there are no coats she can throw for effect or a cool looking dance routine to distract the coaches from the fact they had recently lost their best vocalist to another company.

yoona, in nakyung’s eyes, is what they could find to be her replacement. the main difference between them is that, well, sooyoung is a better vocalist, and she had also helped nakyung a lot when it came to previous singing evaluations. but she can’t run to her previous co-trainee to whine and ignore her advice. instead, nakyung wants to win, and that’s the one thing that makes her drop her strong front and approach someone else. “yoona,” she starts, “can you listen to me sing the chorus? i don’t think i’m doing it right.”

*·— in a bit of a stretch

@rkyjun

she can’t do wonders like the splits or putting your foot behind your head, but nakyung can easily reach her toes which some consider impressive. anything that impresses other people she considers a big win on her book. yoga is the hot girl activity she needs to get on. it’s not like she has the time or the money to go to a specialized yoga studio. this comes as the perfect opportunity to start things out. the fact kim jennie herself is teaching it simply solidifies her choice of going. plus, this counts as part of her trainee schedule. big wins all around.

following the instructions isn’t too hard on itself. as expected, they wouldn’t give an intensive class if it wasn’t specified on the title. with these things, they always tell you to maintain a safe space between the people around you. it’s what she kept in mind when she arrived, but not really the dude who got there right after her. she’s sure his foot is not supposed to be this close to her face, but she can’t make a scene in front of jennie eclipse. that’s a whole jennie eclipse and this is just some random dude. it’ll be okay.

it’ll be alright. just breathe in and out like she was told. except it’s a hard thing to do when a foot hits your nose. nakyung automatically lets go of the current yoga pose—which, of course, involved holding onto your foot, which some people can't seem to do! the girl holds onto her nose, but instead of screaming, she tries to only groan very softly. don’t make a scene. don’t make a scene.

he’s not very good at dancing but he makes an effort to be good since he’s part of a company that focuses in dance, and as such has to be good enough to not drag everyone around him down to his black hole level. at this point, he’s willing to do better and work harder in honing the talents that he had very few. he wants to be on the stage, but he’s willing to work harder and prove that he deserves that dream.
his vocals however are on par with some good vocalists and while he doesn’t consider himself the best, he can hold a note in a group. if he had to admit, his performance skills were getting much better since he had been signed. maybe it was because of the training, but he felt really proud of himself for getting to this level. as he’s interrupted his thoughts, he turns to face the door and he grins. “yeah, totally come on in! i’m just getting some dance practice in,” he stated, with a grin.
he steps aside so that she has room too and he grinned at her. “what’s your plan for the practice time?” he asks, lowering the headphones that he’s wearing so that he can chat with her more freely. It’s only a few moments, so some conversation is good.

once he finally replies to her, nakyung gives him another nod and closes the door behind her. the girl doesn’t feel as talkative as she would after a long day of practice, but if he starts a conversation, then it can only feel right to continue it.

“ah... a new song that just got released... i’ll try to learn the choreo for it.” she knows who he is, but she had seen him more on tv than they had interacted in real life. it’s just how it works when you’re bound to be more focused on your own work, and male and female trainees don’t really get to work together as much as with their own gender. befriending him now couldn’t be too bad, though. “it’s called ‘wannabe’. you probably heard of it.”

nakyung takes her phone out of her pocket but doesn’t look at it yet. she takes a seat somewhere on the floor far away enough so that she won’t bother him. “what about you?” she points at him as if it wasn’t obvious who she was talking to. “were you working on something?”

“drinking it is just to keep your throat kind of ready to sing if you have warmed up but its still a little while for you, when you get used to singing i’m sure you can stop drinking it,” she nods slowly, smiling slightly at the younger, even her didn’t like the lukewarm water but she had gotten used to it– after all, there was nothing like a cold glass of water on a warm summers day.
she does wonder how nakyung will do manage with the song– thankfully it isn’t the hardest song to sing for any of them. “you go to karaoke?” she lifts her brows, from her personal experience that was where she went if she needed to not care.
nakyung’s comment makes her open her eyes slightly, “i doubt anyone expects you to be perfect, i don’t think you need to worry about being perfect– if you were, what would there be to learn?” she nods slowly, giving the female an encouraging smile and nudge, “i’m sure you’ll sound just fine when you sing, you need to give yourself more credit.”

she’s thankful for the feedback and nods at the taller. it’s better to know she won’t need to drink warm water every single day at any point in time. but then nakyung wonders if she looked confused, and sooyoung has just tried putting things in simpler words for a noob like her to understand. instead of frowning, she puts back on a neutral expression. “well, i’ll keep this in mind for next time, then.” which should be at any time now consider they had left their usual schedules in exchange for more schedules.

“of course i go to karaoke.” what does she look like? 50 or 5? she’s a teenager and fangirl. karaoke is part of her vocabulary and would continue to be for a long time—or as long as time allows it. sometimes you just end up too tired from practicing singing all day long to have fun singing later on.

and it’s sooyoung’s final comment that finally digs into nakyung. it felt like the other had been playing a videogame in which you had to collect friendship points to unlock certain scenes. after choosing all the correct options, nakyung smiles. she had to stop being so cranky. it’s not sooyoung’s fault that she doesn’t sound the best, after all. she’s only trying to help. “thank you. but i can’t just let you get all the praise all the time...” she smirks playfully. “the great vocalist trainee of nova... you need a challenge. if it needs to be me, then it’ll be it!”

she hands her the coffee milk before taking one herself. the week leading up to the end of the month always meant lots of convenience store coffee as she adjusts to long nights and early mornings where she has to remind herself that it’ll all be worth it in the end. plus she’s so anxious about it all that she wouldn’t be able to sleep even if she wanted to. jinsoul puts the rest of the milks to the side for the others when they come, wondering if she should go buy more now that they already took both of the coffee ones.
“it’s not cute?” she thinks about it, and she supposes the other girl is right. although the lyrics are sweet, the movements and the feeling of the line itself isn’t as cute as one would expect, making a sort of juxtaposition in the song that creates interest. or at least, she thinks it does, and from what she’s learned in her classes, songs need things like to sound unique and memorable. “a coy look…” she pauses, trying to think of what that would be like. she’s never been a coy or mysterious person, and she’s never even tried flirting with anyone. so she doesn’t know how she would pull that off.
jinsoul looks in the mirror, trying the line as she does the movements while sitting on the ground. “how’s this?” she tries to make a flirty expressions while she sings, but ends up bursting into laughter at how awkward it feels. “okay, maybe not. i’ll keep working on it! i don’t think i’m good at flirting, you know?”

the coffee milk gives that type of refreshing that isn’t really refreshing, per see. more like revitalizing in some way. it’s what shall give her the strength to keep pushing through today, or at least until its power runs out. although she already knows the choreography, that doesn’t always play too well. having to work on the same thing all month long gets tiring. since they’re already towards the end of it, you can guess how tired of it she is. not the song itself—that’s timeless—but having to work on perfecting it with the other girls. it’s easy to get you frustrated.

she watches the other try it out and gives her another smile. “mm!” she nods and puts a hand flat on the floor behind her. it helps not keep her back on hunched forward. “well, the concept is a little bit cute. but it’s like... it’s all a cover, you know?” nakyung nods her head but pouts, trying to think this through. “you know when there’s a guy you like so you act cute around him. but like, actually, you’re just flirting but trying to make it look natural?” she nods again, hoping this time it makes more sense. “a bit like that.”

her hand shakes the coffee milk in her hand (careful not to spill anything) and drops her head to one side. “well you did just call me pretty and buy me coffee, right? wasn’t that good practice?’

if she could choose her ideal evaluation, this one wouldn’t be it. as much as she does kind of like dancing, she feels like singing comes more easily to her, that it shows her strengths a little better. and now that she’s only dancing, she feels like there’s so much more to focus on, so much more to get right. she had chosen this part to challenge herself, thought that if she threw herself headfirst into these cute but sexy solo parts, that maybe she would get better at it, but the more she does it the more she feels like maybe she should have chosen something else. but even though she has her doubts about herself, everyone else is the group is cute and pretty, and wouldn’t they all do well? especially if she just works a little harder, does a little bit more, pushes herself a tiny bit.
nakyung is especially pretty, and she seems like she fits the concept. “nakyung!” she calls out softly, sitting down next to the other girl in front of the mirror. “do you want coffee milk? i got an extra one.” she takes it out of the bag, offering it to her. “or i have a strawberry one too, if you would rather have that.”
jinsoul takes a sip of her own coffee milk, pausing for a second as she tries to think of what she wants to say. “your facial expressions are good.” how do you say this to someone who’s pretty? how does she ask her what the secret is when she knows that the answer is just to be born like that? nakyung looks like a fairy on stage, and even with their ugly phone practice videos you can tell that she’s a pretty girl who would be attention grabbing. on the other hand, jinsoul feels like she blends in, that she doesn’t capture the hearts of the viewers the way some people do, that whatever positive attention she gets is probably just luck. “i’m still working on mine…i wanted to do the chocolate ice cream part well…” she marks the movements, then looks at the other girl. “how do you do it?”

having only to dance, and getting to cover ‘fancilicious’ for it? this felt like a big win situation to her. long gone were the singing evals she struggled through and pretended everything was fine. now she gets to perform a dance she had already mastered and get points for it. like ‘wow, nakyung, you learn so fast!’ and, of course, she’ll just agree to it. no one needs to know she knew this song before. if they ask her, she might as well just say she never even heard it before. although, not many would believe that if they know her.

she hears her name being called and looks at the girl sitting beside her. she gives her a smile. nakyung’s lucky that she got paired to a bunch of other pretty and talented girls. even if being with uglier, less talented girls would make her look better. it’s still good having that positive energy around. “yeah?” the girl listens to the other’s request while nodding. “of course! i’ll take... coffee milk!”

coffee is a lifesaver, and having to wake up early for their schedules was a struggle, no matter how long you’ve been around. her eyes widen to jinsoul’s next comment, but nakyung takes the time to sip her new coffee while the other continues with her train of thought. she knows she’s pretty so that on itself doesn’t come as a surprise. it’s the suddenness of the comment that hits her. right after a coffee offer, too. “well, thank you!” nakyung gives her a smile. “well, the part isn’t cute, although it sounds like it. instead of looking cute, i try to go for a more... coy look? not really flirty—or maybe a little bit.” she chuckles.

yognsun knows that drinking lukewarm water isn’t ideal when the younger asked her about if she does her routines every day she chuckles, because “no, i don’t.” she wonders how much of it she should share with the other, how much is she really interested to know.
“i usually just do simple warmups,” she nods, “but when i have to sing an intensive song– i make sure to prepare my throat.”
for this song in particular yongsun didn’t feel the need to prepare herself, it wasn’t hard on her throat– at most she would warm up her throat before starting but she was sure even without that she would be able to manage and hit the right pitches– it was one of the perks of having practiced intensively for three months, “i’m used to singing ballads though, so for this song i just warm up my throat once.”

she nods to the other’s words. okay, no lukewarm water ever again, then. unlike sooyoung, nakyung would probably need to do these things more often than not. what’s challenging for her isn’t anymore for sooyoung. she stares down at the water bottle she was given and flattens her lips. crap. she hates it here.

“i see,” she comments. nakyung is worried about it now, but, certainly, she won’t care about this later on. it just makes her think that maybe she shouldn’t have asked at all. it’s better not to know about these things than to know and not do them later.

so she looks back at sooyoung and gives her a bored smile. “i usually just sing the latest releases, you know? even if it’s from nara, but that doesn’t mean i’ll sound like her.” nakyung chuckles. “i won’t do the perfect job, i know it, but i think i can manage sounding good for you.”

Sungyeol had to admit. There were many places that he found himself weak in and his dancing was one area that he often struggled in. He had grown tired of the coaches essentially ripping him apart for his skills in dancing, so he had decided to spend extra time to brush on his dancing, since after all he was in dancing company and he had to be good at his dancing. He couldn’t very well be a horrible dancer.
He had spent the afternoon practicing his dancing and he was in such a zone of total concentration that it was ridiculous to even understand. He hadn’t even heard the door of the practice room open and he only turned in shock when he heard a voice. “Oh, hello!” he grinned, stopping for a few moments.

if there is one thing she is good at, it’s dancing. she knows that, and nakyung is okay with it. each group that debuts these days grows bigger and bigger, and having fewer lines isn’t an idea that bothers her. as long as she doesn’t make a fool out of herself by not being in sync with the other members, only getting one or two lines is the least of her problems. she wants to shine on stage, no matter what they give her.

and it’s not like she’s a terrible singer. the girl can take care of what they give her. that’s why when they have free time, nakyung doesn’t waste most of hers with things that aren’t at the top of her priority list. instead, she finds herself a dance practice room for her to use. while she prefers those that aren’t crowded, there’s nothing wrong with sharing it with some people as long as they don’t bother her.

she can hear the sound of someone inside, and when she walks in the girl is glad to see that there’s only one more person there. “hello.” she greets him with a nod, not wanting to be completely disrespectful. just barging in like that is probably enough. he doesn’t seem to hear her or see her, so nakyung stands still by the door, wondering what she should do next. it takes a minute, but when he looks at her she gives him a smile. “hello,” she repeats herself. “can i use the room, too?”
