I’ve been interested in SGRho for a while now and while doing my research on Greek life I’ve been flooded with denouncing videos talking about hazing and religious qualms. I’ve also seen TikTok’s saying the opposite that there’s no hazing and that there’s weird religious stuff going on. As a Christian the algorithm has me conflicted about whether on not I should pursue. So my questions are what are y’all’s opinions on the claims I mentioned? Also is if I even get selected for a line is there any sort of informed consent as to what takes place in the induction?

Thank you for your time!

You should talk to Christian members of Sigma Gamma Rho for their thoughts.  I’d recommend personally waiting to have this conversation until you have an invitation in hand, though.  It may be easier to find a member to discuss that sort of thing with if the chapter already establishes that they want you.

Is it a red flag if the president of a grad chapter doesn’t seem to like you that much?

Yes, but a red flag is not a black ball.

do you think a freshman in college is too young to join aka? i feel that i’m ready but most of the women in my campus chapter pledged as sophomores

Apply at your earliest qualified opportunity.  If the school and sorority rules allow Freshmen, go for it. If you KNOW that you know what you want, there is no harm in being a second semester freshman crossing. (Besides getting burned out before you graduate) Something else came up for me.... joining early gives you more time to seek leadership positions like National Undergraduate Member-at-Large or International Second Vice President.   If you are about the WORK of the organization, this could be an interesting talking point among members that you trust.

Hi, I am currently interested in pledging DST in the fall and while reading and doing research I have kept haring about a "rush" event. And I was wondering what that is and how I would know that these events are taking place.

Delta defines what rush is on their national website.

In undergrad I submitted an application for one org. I was denied and ended up graduating that same year. After continuing to do my research, I found myself aligning with another org. (This org was not on campus when I was in undergrad)

I know that it may come up in conversation and potentially on an application.. but I wanted to ask.. would me applying to one org in undergrad prevent me from potentially joining another org in grad chapter?

Also, why is it considered Greek hopping when people may genuinely find themselves aligning with something else? Why is there such a negative connotation with thinking you wanted one thing and realizing it wasn’t for you to begin with?

Thank you in advance for your answers and honesty! I really appreciate it😭💘

It usually does come up on an application, but it depends on the org whether or not it was a deal-breaker.  The most important thing is to be honest.

It’s considered Greek hopping because it is Greek hopping, no shade.  If you hopped from one org to another after a denial, there is no way for that to look good.  That is not simply changing your mind.  That’s changing your mind after your options became more limited.

That doesn’t make you a bad person.  That makes you a person with a story.

I, too, changed my mind.  Uncle Rashid might have been a Que somewhere out in the multiverse.  There’s even a letter of interest somewhere out there from when I was 18.

By 23, I was an Alpha.  I changed my mind.  I have a story.  So do you.

Hello! I am a recent college graduate who is now pursuing my masters degree. I am looking to pursue DST. During my undergraduate I was a transfer student. My overall GPA for both school was a 2.64 but my GPA from the school that I received my degree in was a 2.97. Will they look at my overall GPA from both school or my cumulative GPA from the school I received my degree from?

Ask a member that you trust.  We can’t answer specific questions like this.

Hello! I'm an undergrad student looking to improve my chances to get into my dream sorority, and to do so, I know community service is a requirement to add to my resume. I read the stub relating to what counts as community service, but I realized this wasn't exactly touched upon specifically, so I was wondering if volunteering at an animal shelter/rescue count as service hours? Thank you so much for your time, and I apologize if this is a silly question :]

It probably counts, but might not!  You should ask a member of the organization. We answered a question like this many years ago, but I’ll summarize: At my undergrad, I joined Alpha Phi Omega, a community service fraternity.  We had a service project called Puppy Love where we’d go play with animals to socialize them prior to adoption. Not the school telling us service to animals wasn’t service!  Not the school not letting us use university vans to transport our members to the project! So we had to use funds from our own endowment to pay for transportation to our own service project.  Terrible! I have never heard of an NPHC organization not counting service to animal shelters, but also, you may have noticed no NPHC org has animal-related service projects, either. So that’s why I say you should ask a member that you trust. --Uncle Rashid

Need advice

I have applied for an org in 2017 when i was in undergrad but didn’t get in. Fast forward to now 2023, I am interested in joining another organization as a graduate member. Trust and believe I done my research and gone to events to know this org was meant for me. I expressed interest to one of the members in that graduate chapter. Mind you,me and that member have become really close and formed a friendship. The member of that chapter explained to her that there is a question on the application asking if you applied to a diff org. The question is do I say no on the app or do I say yes.

Always tell the truth.

For the individual who requested the “So You Want to Be a Delta?” Essay. It can be found here https://nueta.tripod.com/PROSPECT.HTM

Someone was kind enough to adapt it from Bee Jae’s website prior to her passing.

Hello,

My sponsor reached out to me about the organization(alpha kappa alpha) having a Line this fall. My gpa in undergrad is below the requirement, however my gpa in grad meets the requirements. Should i tell my sponsor or go through with the process? Do you know which gpa the organization will look at it?

Show your sponsor your transcripts and let her decide how to proceed.

I am trying to become a member of DST (grad chapter) and I texted the chapter president asking if there were any upcoming events. She stated some of the members will be at their sorority house watching a football game in a couple of weeks (one that is big in my city) but it will not be publicized to everyone. Was this an invite? I don’t want to just show up and it wasn’t LOL.

I would have just asked "Do you recommend that I attend?" --Uncle Rashid

Hello! I was initiated in a grad chapter, and unfortunately my chapter hasn’t really taught us much. They are big on anti-hazing, and I understand. However, I was bit disappointed that they haven’t taught some important basic things such as holding the sign correctly, doing the call, dos and donts. Has anyone experience this before that may have suggestions for a grad chapter neo?

You need to communicate your needs to your chapter president and/or intake coordinator. Explain that you want to be sure that you are representing them appropriately at all times, officially as well as casually/socially.

The grad org I want to pursue is donating towards a great cause. I want to donate but not sure if I should donate towards one of the members I “held small convo” who also holds a high position in the org. Or create my own fundraising page within the organization, and people could donate through me. Which in your opinion would be a better option?

Choose a member to donate through.

Hi! I recently started my online bachelors degree, and really want to be a Sigma Gamma Rho. How would I go about it? I don’t have any relatives who are Greek, I would be the first to start the tradition. Thank you!

If there is no chapter associated with the institution, I would contact either a regional director or the national office and ask if there are any undergraduate membership pathways for people attending your school. --Uncle Rashid

I recently attended a statewide virtual informational for a fraternity I've been interested in for the past 14 years. At the end of the meeting, they asked for our emails but I've heard nothing back from them. I stalked their social media and there's no recent updates beyond the informational flyer. Should I reach out to someone?

Yes.

Hello! I appreciate this page and the information given. I'm sure every organization is different, but about how much do you pay in dues?

I don't really feel comfortable answering this kind of question publicly.

Greetings! I hope the admin have had a great year thus far. I wanted to reach out regarding introducing yourself to interests who are pursuing the same org you are pursuing. Is it wise to make connections with people who see at events who aren’t members?

I think it's always wise to make friends of strangers.
