It’s solar and wind and tidal and geothermal and hydropower.

It’s plant-based diets and regenerative livestock farming and insect protein and lab-grown meat.

It’s electric cars and reliable public transit and decreasing how far and how often we travel.

It’s growing your own vegetables and community gardens and vertical farms and supporting local producers.

It’s rewilding the countryside and greening cities.

It’s getting people active and improving disabled access.

It’s making your own clothes and buying or swapping sustainable stuff with your neighbours.

It’s the right to repair and reducing consumption in the first place.

It’s greater land rights for the commons and indigenous peoples and creating protected areas.

It’s radical, drastic change and community consensus.

It’s labour rights and less work.

It’s science and arts.

It’s theoretical academic thought and concrete practical action.

It’s signing petitions and campaigning and protesting and civil disobedience.

It’s sailboats and zeppelins.

It’s the speculative and the possible.

It’s raising living standards and curbing consumerism.

It’s global and local.

It’s me and you.

Climate solutions look different for everyone, and we all have something to offer.

I’m not on Twitter anymore, but I see John Rogers is still there bringing the fire. As I think I mentioned here a while back, I’m not in the WGA yet -- applied, after writing the script for the Fifth Season film, but obviously everything’s on hold given this. (The script was being revised, but since the strike’s been called it’s “pencils down.”)

And the stakes are exactly as high as what John lays out here. I’ve already seen any number of absolute garbage takes on this -- dismissing screenwriters as rich hacks who just want to get richer, stupidly suggesting that only some workers should matter (as if that won’t get weaponized against all of us), and worse. But whether y’all want to believe it or not, creative workers are workers, and the WGA is fighting for all of us right now.

Since 2000, tuberculosis has killed around 40 MILLION PEOPLE–more than AIDS, malaria, Covid, or any other infectious disease. This year, it will kill over 1.7 million people.

The global TB pandemic is getting worse. Rates of infection, disability, and death are going up. Next year, tuberculosis will probably pass Covid and again be the leading cause of infectious disease death on Earth.

Where is the outrage? Where are the hundreds of billions of dollars we need to expand access to treatment and to improve the quality of available treatments? We found this money for Covid. We found it for HIV. Why won’t we find it for TB? Why does the rich world ignore this disease?

Please consider reading up on the Fairphone friends. I generally don’t mean to simp for a brands but their modular design is much more user-friendly for repairability and they seem to be making a genuine effort to preserve human rights and minimize use of conflict-minerals. It’s by no means a 100% ethical phone, nor will it be capable of pushing the market away from these problems as a whole- But-! The more success it finds and the more we speak up about it the closer we may come to some meaningful legislation with regards to these products. Here’s a handy scoreboard for different phone brands from The Good Shopping Guide.

Of course the most ethical phone is still the one that doesn’t need to be produced at all so if you think you can tolerate a hand-me-down or your old chugging device for a while longer then god speed

CW: antisemitism, pale of settlement, pogroms, genocide, cultural erasure

I don't think goyim can really conceive of how much Jews actually hold back in our criticism of antisemitism in media, and when you hear us it is often because we see a dangerous message that you don't... Yet.

I have a complicated relationship with Tim Burton's rendition of The Corpse Bride. I love it as a beautiful piece of stop motion art, but it isn't what it should have been, he took a Jewish story from the Pale and with intention stripped it of its Jewish origins. This alone is incredibly antisemitic. The criticism you will hear has probably been "this is a Jewish story, it should have retained its Jewish elements" but have you heard why we feel strongly about this story?

Image

The story of the corpse bride is incredibly important to me and was born from Jewish trauma and Christian violence. Mobs would routinely attack Jewish weddings, they would murder brides and they would bury them in unmarked graves by the roadside still in their wedding clothes, they reasoned that without Jewish wives there are no Jewish mother's. Jews are intrinsic to the story.

It is antisemitism to take our story, about our pain, at the hands of non-jews and strip it for "useful" parts, in fact it is heartbreaking every time.

We are often forced to pick our battles and fighting a battle over a movie that has already been released by a director with a cult following is not worth it, you only hear us speak up in numbers when the antisemitism may lead to another century of violence, because raising our voice means picking a fight, because so many of you already see our pain as inconvenient and it is exhausting to never be heard.

“While many people think fanfiction is about inserting sex into texts (like Tolkien’s) where it doesn’t belong, Brancher sees it differently: “I was desperate to read about sex that included great friendship; I was repurposing Tolkien’s text in order to do that. It wasn’t that friendship needed to be sexualized, it was that erotica needed to be … friendship-ized.” Many fanfiction writers write about sex in conjunction with beloved texts and characters not because they think those texts are incomplete, but because they’re looking for stories where sex is profound and meaningful. This is part of what makes fan fiction different from pornography: unlike pornography, fanfic features characters we already care deeply about, and who tend to already have long-standing and complex relationships with each other. It’s a genre of sexual subjectification: the very opposite of objectification. It’s benefits with friendship.”

— Francesca Coppa, “Introduction to The Dwarf’s Tale,” The Fanfiction Reader (via francescacoppa)

Someone put it into words. I gotta sit down

(Why does this belong on my decidedly not-fan-fiction-related blog, you ask? Because this quote illustrates very well how assuming that anything where people put sex in it is debasing it, objectifying it, or simply ‘sexualizing’ it, etc. often misses a lot of the real picture of why people do that thing.)

i put “All I Want for Christmas is You” through a MIDI converter, and then back through an mp3 converter

the result is this garbage

I’m driving myself up the wall because I swear I can hear the vocal line but I don’t know how that could be if it was truly converted to MIDI. Unless you can replicate speech sounds entirely with modulated MIDI notes, in which case I’m actually impressed with this tire fire of an MP3.

My adaptation of the God of Arepo short story, which was originally up at ShortBox Comics Fair for charity. You can get a copy of the DRM-free ebook here for free - and I'd encourage you to donate to Mighty Writers or The Ministry of Stories in exchange.

Again it's an honour to be drawing one of my favourite short stories ever. Thank you so much for the original authors for creating this story; and for everyone who bought a copy and donated to the above non-profits.
