If this is really how they deal with real complaints about how the show glorifies suicide and shows multiple scenes of graphic sexual assault/rape (and also shows scenes of how to properly shoot a gun which I think is just as harmful considering the increasing amount of mass shooters in the US), then they really are just in it for money and do not care at all about how to create a show that talks about suicide/sexual assault/other hard topics without glorifying them or showing them in ways that can be harmful to viewers. (Psychologists agree that depicting the scenes the way 13RW does can be very harmful)
Their excuse is that they aren’t “sugar-coating it” and “showing it in a real light”, but that doesn’t mean you have to make them extremely graphic and potentially harmful. There are great shows that do address mental health and sexual assault without the harmful side effects (such as Degrassi and One Day at a Time)
I have also seen the argument that if they pull this show, they will lose a lot of LGBT+ and POC representation, but there are other shows on Netflix (or just in general) that have good representation of those groups, including Sense8, The Fosters, How to Get Away With Murder, Degrassi, The L Word, Scandal, One Day at A Time, Black Mirror (ep: San Junipero), and many others.
