The houses role in Astrology 2✨
& a breakdown of the modalities, elements, 4 sections of the chart, & the MC, ASC, DC, & IC.
This post is Part 2 of my “The Houses role in Astrology” posts. Part 1 explains the house wheel & breaks down each of the 12 houses. In this post I will be breaking down the different divisions of the house wheel by going through the quadrants, the elements, & the modalities briefly. Part 1 here.
Quadrants - What are they? There are twelve houses & four quadrants. This means that 3 houses make up 1 Quadrant. The quadrants are basically four sections of the house wheel that can tell you a lot about the direction in which your life is focused. If you have a lot of planetary energy in one or two quadrants, then that can tell you a lot about the focus of your energy. If you have planets all over the place, that can also tell you’re a bit scattered in direction or that you’re balanced in all areas of life.
✨Quadrant 1 (Awareness of Self): 1-3
The first Quadrant refers to houses 1-3 which are primarily self focused houses. Having a lot of energy focused in this Quadrant can indicate that in this lifetime, your purpose is to really hone in on your personality & yourself. Info on Quadrant 1 here.
✨Quadrant 2 (Integration w/ Environmnt): 4-6
The Second Quadrant refers to houses 4-6 which are primarily environment related houses. Having a lot of energy within this Quadrant can indicate there’s a lot of focus on your foundation, home life, routine, creativity & self expression, & your relationships with your mother, family, & children. In this life it’s heavily emphasized that you really develop through your relationships with those closest to you and you really work on building a foundation that’s comfortable for you. Routine, the arts, & comfort are a big theme within this Quadrant as well. Info on Quadrant 2 here.
✨Quadrant 3 (Awareness of Others): 7-9
The Third Quadrant refers to houses 7-9 which are primarily relationship & people oriented houses. Having a lot of energy within this Quadrant can indicate that there’s a really big focus in this life to learn through your relationships with others. You most often feel like yourself when you’re around others & the more you meet new people or spend your time with others, the more you learn about yourself and the environment around you. A really big part of this life is to learn about partnership and working with others. Info on Quadrant 3 here.
✨Quadrant 4 (Integrarion w/ Society): 10-12
The Fourth Quadrant refers to houses 10 - 12 which are primarily humanitarian & society oriented houses. In this lifetime there’s a lot of focus to really learn and expand through friendship, society, & healing. These people are very goal oriented & they have a lot of focus on their career, goals, & things that are highly important to society or “the bigger picture.” Info on Quadrant 4 here.
What are the modalities? There are 3 different modalities (cardinal, Fixed, & Mutable). The modalities within the wheel chart are called “Angular” which corresponds with cardinal energy, “Succedent” which corresponds with Fixed energy, & “Cadent” which corresponds with Mutable energy. If you are not familiar with cardinal, Fixed, & Mutable energy than look here for reference. My post on the modalities is here.
✨Angular Houses: 1, 4, 7, & 10
The Angular Houses corresponds with the Cardinal signs - Aries (1), Cancer (4), Libra (7), & Capricorn (10). These houses are more so about the “action” in life & they showcase a lot about you and your relationship with others. The first house is the house of self, the 4th house is the house of your upbringing, the 7th house is the house of interpersonal relationships, & the 10th house is the house of your goals and dreams. More info on the Angular Houses here.
✨Succedent Houses: 2, 5, 8, & 11
The Succedent Houses correspond with the Fixed signs - Taurus (2), Leo (5), Scorpio (8), & Aquarius (11). These houses are mainly about possessions & resources which ultimately goes to this idea of “security.” More info on the Succedent Houses here.
✨Cadent Houses: 3, 6, 9, & 12
The Cadent Houses correspond with the Mutable signs - Gemini (3), Virgo (6), Sagittarius (9), & Pisces (12). The Cadent Houses are all about our though process and why we do the things we do. The 3rd house is all about communication and lower education, the 6th house is about service and routine, the 9th house is about philosophy, religion, & higher education, and the 12th house is about our dreams, subconscious, & fears. More info on the Cadent Houses here.
What are the Elements? There are four different elements within Astrology (fire, Earth, Water, & Air). Each element has corresponding qualities & those different elemental qualities will reflect in the houses. Info on the elements here for reference.
The fire houses - Aries (1), Leo (5), & Sagittarius (9) - are houses that involve action, energy, & the experience of being/feeling “alive” which all in turn leads to this idea of Idenity. 1st house is the house of self, 5th house is the house of self expression, creativity, & “fun,” & the 9th house is the house of religion, philosophy, travel, & our beliefs. More info here.
✨Earth Houses: 2, 6, & 10
The Earth Houses - Taurus (2), Virgo (6), & Capricorn (10) - are houses that involve routine, comfort, & this idea of money & stability. The 2nd house is about finances, possessions, & values, the 6th house is about service & routine, the 10th house is career, our goals, & our dreams. More info here.
The Air Houses - Gemini (3), Libra (7), & Aquarius (11) - are houses that involve our connection with others. The third house is the house of communication, the 7th house is the house of interpersonal relationships (romantic & business), & the 11th house is the house of friendships. More info here.
✨Water Houses: 4, 8, & 12
The water houses - Cancer (4), Scorpio (8), & Pisces (12) - are all houses that involve death? Rebirth, the subconscious, & overall this spiritual/“psychic” essence. The 4th house is our roots (involving death/resting place), the 8th house is rebirth, death, & destruction, and the 12th house is illusion, the subconscious, & dreams. More info here.
Please be mindful that these are the most brief & basic of interpretations in order to get you started on the idea of these divisions. I have some helpful links to help & there are also other ways to divide the chart - these are just the three basic beginner ones that I found were the easiest to learn.
