Things about the byers (mostly jonathan because hes my hyperfixation) I desperately want to talk about:

Will knowing how to load and fire a shotgun in middleschool,

Jonathan having fought his dad previously, despite only being 16 in s1

Jonathan checking Lonnie's trunk for Will's body

Jonathan knowing how to sterilize a knife and being fully prepared to cut Eleven open to get what was inside her. Without hesitation.

The way Jonathan shrinks under authority and adverts his gaze (his boss, hopper)

Jonathan working to support his family and help Joyce out, only for that effort to be the reason Will goes missing. Hence why Jonathan blamed himself so heavily

Lonnie trying to use Joyce's mourning to worm money out of her

Jonathan stealing the fucking?? Gun?? Just fucking pockets that shit. He didn't even know he was up against supernatural shit, didn't he? He just assumed he needed a gun?? Against who? His dad??? YALL,

Jonathan taking care of Will at such a young age for both of them (Lego in the nose story)

Coffin shopping at 16, the way he goes to identify the corpse and gags and runs away

The way jonathan couldn't stand watching will in pain that he actively tries to stop the exorcism-type scene. Like that could've been DISASTROUS if he had stopped it, but. We never talk about how much agony those byers kids were in that scene. Physically for will and emotionally for Jonathan. Pls watch that scene. The pain in that episode tears through me like nothing ever before BECAUSE THE WAY HE TURNS AND FRANTICALLY HIDES BY HUGGING NANCY...........

the fact that Jonathan is using his SUMMER JOB MONEY to make mortgage payments on their house - he’s not just helping out with grocery money or putting gas in the car or paying for Will’s art supplies they maybe couldn’t afford otherwise he’s literally contributing to keeping the roof over their heads

(how much of a financial strain did destroying their house two years in a row have on the byers?)

The way Jonathan begs his mother to do basic things like eat and sleep like he’s coached her through anxiety episodes before: “mom you can’t get like this”

Jonathan crying alone in his room listening to music after being told his brother is dead while his mother has (from his perspective) a break with reality in the other room

Jonathan’s school-wide reputation for being ‘a creep’ and ‘queer’

Will trying to comfort Jonathan in a moment that is clearly supposed to be about Jonathan comforting him (s4 hug scene)

Will’s feelings about Bob’s death - grief? guilt?

Will’s feelings about leading a dozen soldiers to their death

Just like all of Will’s trauma from s1-2 in general

Joyce’s mental health, past, present, and future

I think the people who say “You don’t need to be critical of every piece of media you consume” fundamentally misunderstand what we mean by “critical”.

When we say “be critical of the media you consume” we don’t mean “be negative” as in, find every flaw and pick it apart CinemaSins style.

We mean “examine it”. Like, look at what you are consuming, and in many cases, enjoying, and ask yourself why you are enjoying it. Ask yourself who made it. Ask yourself if you are the target audience. Ask yourself if you are being represented by the characters you see. Ask yourself if the author has biases or political leanings they are trying to include in the story.

Just, ask yourself questions. The answers don’t have to be negative. That’s not what being critical means.

no offence but i think a lot of us me included don’t actually want romantic love as badly as we think and really are just lonely and crave a closeness and intimacy that feels out of reach in friendships because of society’s emphasis on marriage and the nuclear family so we project that into the never ending search for a perfect love and a soulmate when really we all just want to mean something to someone

like i’m not dissing romantic love i would to be in love rn but i get so frustrated because humans are such social creatures and we need community to survive but we are taught that we need to pair off and so a lot of us spend a great majority of our lives lonely in between romantic encounters or we settle for less and give ourselves away to people because we are in constant fear of ending up completely isolated and alone and it’s so sad

This is called amatonormativity

100% amatonormativity, and this sense of loss or something missing in the definition of relationships is not limited to arospecs. Amatonormativity is baked into society as a whole (it’s way more expensive to live alone, for example) and its casualties have effects on everyone. It’s just that arospecs come into their identity and sense of self by way of examining these assumptions and trying to figure out what fits. You don’t have to be aro to ask those questions and challenge those assumptions!

But this is a legitimate phenomenon, and nobody’s listening to aros because we’re “cringe.” The more people we have across the spectrum of sexuality questioning “the way things are,” the better it’s going to be for all of us.

Some aro allyship things:

  • Learn about amatonormativity.
  • Try to be more open-minded about things you don’t understand. (E.g. Queerplatonic relationships can be founded on a kind of attraction you might not experience, you don’t need to 100% understand or experience something to support people who experience this.)
  • Don’t assume ace inclusionists are aro inclusionists too if they haven’t said so. Some people exclude aros but not aces - ask to be sure.
  • No matter how much you’ve read up on aromanticism, aro issues, and aro terminology, don’t police aro identities! Romance is a social construct defined differently by almost everyone (especially alloromantics who like to not define it at all!) so it shouldn’t surprise you that people with vastly different experiences might use the same label.
  • Try not to be casually amatonormative. Saying things like “they’re just friends” or “they’re more than friends” reinforces the hierarchy and border between friendship and romance. They’re equal, romance isn’t a step up, and there is a lot of grey area between the two that shouldn’t be ignored.

Some cute sibling things from personal experience: • bonding over references to obscure cartoons watched obsessively as kids / • going on walks together just to get out of the house / • friendship bracelets / • cooking together / • turning on a Family Favorite Song and everyone just sings it really loudly

All excellent prompts, thank you all for your insights 👏

You know what makes me mad? I used to work at Pizza hut and everyday we would have to throw away perfectly good pizza or potato wedges or garlic bread in the bin because it was the wrong order or the customer had changed their mind. They made us bin the whole thing. We weren’t allowed to put it aside to eat from or take it home (we all earned minimum wage so it’s not like we culd afford pizza that expensive a lot). But what makes me even madder is that they could easily give that to the homeless or poor. Like, if a homeless person came into the store, we could have easily given him one of the 20 or so pizzas that we would be binning every single day anyway. Imagine all the pizza hut stores in the world. Imagine each and every one throwing away on average 20 pizzas a day. Imagine how many people that would feed. Fuck corporations man.

Capitalism is violence.

Grocery stores almost always throw out food when it reaches the expiration date, and most of them destroy it so no one can take it from the dumpster and eat it. Literally, destroying food so no one gets to eat without paying for it. My local Stop & Shop does this.

c a p i t a l i s m    i s    v i o l e n c e

one of the top tricks homeless people learn is to stakeout the bins behind pizza hut and little ceasars- during the high traffic times for ‘wrong’ pizzas at hut, and during low traffic times for ceasars for the hot and readies that dont sell and are getting ‘old’ you probably were feeding people who needed it, but in a more degrading and less sanitary way

CAPITALISM IS VIOLENCE

fun fact my cousins go dumpster diving a lot, and once i went with them and the lengths stores will go to to avoid homeless people using their wasted products is actually insane

i dont remember where we went diving, but it was a clothing store and there were a TON of bags of shoes. pretty decent sneakers, not anything fancy or rich ofc but good sturdy ones. except that they slashed open the soles of every pair. every. single. pair. easily 50 shoes per bag and not a single one could be salvaged. it must have taken hours to destroy each one.

Theres no point in doing it, if a person is looking through the trash for things they need theyre obviously struggling enough that you’re not losing their business if you let them take what you dont sell, youre just being greedy and violent and incredibly wasteful for the hell of it.

eat the rich.

If I were to go into a store and slash shoes, it would be destruction of property.

I work at Taco Bell and can confirm. We take the “wrong” food whenever we can, and if one of my transients happens to be in when it’s made I’ll hand it over, but we must waste hundreds of dollars’ worth of good food for no reason.

Jewish people: Never Again means now Jewish people: When we say Never Again we don’t mean just us Jewish people: This is the same exact way this started for us last time Jewish people: We’re being arrested for trying to do something and they aren’t letting people know what’s happening or how many have died Jewish people: These are concentration camps, start calling them that. Goy, repeatedly: Uhhh, calling them that diminishes the suffering of The Jews, so you shouldn’t make those comparisons!!

Goy can (and should) reblog but don’t comment.

Broke: Disney should make 2D movies again

Woke: Disney should be dissolved and their assets and resources redistributed, partly opening up more room for other artists or groups thereof to have a chance against a near monopolistic studio
