Hi, I saw your posts about hijab wearing women in fiction not taking of their hijabs for a boy and I was wondering if you could please give me some tips about writing hijab wearing characters? It's for a book I'm trying to write. Also, please could you tell me some good sources for more information? Thanks.

when writing a Hijabi, just write them as you would any other character. Muslim women who wear hijab are human, they come with the same emotions, anxieties, struggles, hobbies, quirks, pet peeves and interests that any woman would. the thing that differentiates them is that they cover their hair and body for God. And sometimes the visibility of their faith can lead to prejudices in Islamophobic countries such as France and India. The character does not have to be perfect as no human being is perfect, we all sin and we all struggle with elements of our faith. But the reason why removing hijab for a boy is controversial bc it weaponizes the idea of a Muslim women and fuels wars in the Middle East as well as South Asia. By showing hijab as oppressive, it takes away a Muslim woman’s agency and choice. The concept of hijab is no different than a nun’s habit. Both Muslim women and Christian women are encouraged to cover for God just as Mary, peace be upon her, had exemplified. Another point that needs to be stressed is hijab exists for men too, a man must cover from his navel to his knees and is required to lower his gaze when a female is present irrespective of her attire. Thanks for the ask! Sources - X, X, X . If you have any additional questions don’t hesitate to reach out.

Hi, I've heard that it would be rude to write a muslim character with magic, but would it be alright to write one in a world with magic, but who doesn't have magic herself?

That is a great question and one I’m struggling with myself as my latest wip involves a magic system. In Islam, magic is very much a real concept but all magic is evil, there is no such good thing as “good“ magic. We believe magic to be rooted in evil, and a form of manipulation from Satan. Reliance on magic over Allah (God) is considered a major sin Hence, Muslims are reprimanded for engaging in any such practices, industries or career (witch craft, palm reading, zodiac signs, medium, voodoo dolls). Muslims do enjoy Harry Potter tho as it’s just entertainment. But in the Muslim world, magic is very much real and is referred to as “Black Magic” and it is to be avoided at all costs. if you have a Muslim character, I think your character can be knowledgeable of the magical realm and the spiritual elements as Muslims are aware of such things. To protect from black magic and other such forms of magic we recite verses from the Quran similarly to how Christian’s recite from the Bible. but to answer your question, if you want to avoid any conflict from fans and audience, your best option is to make the Muslim character not a practicer of magic.

thanks for asking! As for some resources here are a few videos I think might help, reach out if you need any explanation. (X , X)

Songs of Alerïa Location: (NORTH) T A R R A G O N

Silene stares into Eira’s eyes, “have you ever seen a mother wolf? f you go after one of her cubs, she comes at you, with all her fury, leaving nothing of the enemy behind. Not even his bones.”
“Is that a threat?” Eira’s voice shakes.
A smirk forms itself across Silene’s face, “it is a promise.”

In the icy peaks bordering Aleria to the North lies Independent Tarragon, home to wolves, glaciers and the Avestian people. For centuries, The Avestian worshipped the stars, and believed that they too were once stars who fell onto the Earth for a purpose. A purpose that was lost when the Alerian’s conquered Tarragon and burned their texts for total domination. Aleria ruled Tarragon for over 100 years, enslaving its people and crushing the many rebellions that ensued. But for over a decade now, Northern Tarragon became the first in history to break away from Aleria and declare independence. Following their victory, the Avestians tore down all the monuments and statues of the Empire. They burned the books and laws that once governed them, and from the ashes wrote a new government. No more kings and no more queens, all power belongs to the people. Tarragon has quickly established itself as a key political and economic player by forming ties with Kogon, exporting weapons made from a rare mineral, and advancing the navy. Although Tarragon has lived out crude winters, the Avestians refuse to give up the fight for its brother, Occupied Tarragon.

hi! i saw your post about muslim woman wearng hijab in fiction and i was actually struggling with this at the moment - would it be offensive if a non-muslim couple brought a muslim a hijab? the situation is basically a 'secret santa' thing where they get eachother presents for the holidays and the man in the couple gets asked to buy something for the muslim. i dont know if it would be offensive or just a cute symbol of their friendship though. sorry if this came across as rude at all! thanks!

hey thank you so much for the ask and you were not rude at all. i think that is completely okay and honestly such a cute idea. good luck with your writing, i’d love to read it.

if you are writing a muslim female character who wears hijab please please please do not have your character strip off her hijab for a man/boy. honestly, this is not representation, its humiliating. it is further feeding into misconceptions that hijab is oppressive and reinforces the narrative that islam is a threat to womanhood - which is NOT true. please be true to your character’s heritage and allow her to blossom with hijab. that is all we ask. your character can wear hijab and do great things.

So I made a thing and I really wanted to share it with writeblr. I think for the most part, this is how I see my characters. Except Roy, she has ash white hair and tan skin. And Ayden wears glasses but he’s definitely awkward and clumsy. Eira and Sarai are pretty much on point, just Sarai has light medium skin.

History of Alerïa: The Battle for Reyla

The Island of Reyla was discovered by Reyla of the Bukhar Desert for the Crown. She, along with her crew of ex criminals, stumbled upon this territory inhabited by a people known as the Eikko. They reported their discovery to the then Queen Lasair who allowed a group of Alerïans to travel abroad and settle in hopes of starting their lives anew. Crown Princess Leia was one of the many firsts to travel across the Eidar Ocean and begin a new family on the Island of Reyla, after giving up her right to be Queen. Although the Settlers were greeted with warmth and compassion as the winds winter approached the alliance between the Eikko and the Alerïans too turned sour. A war ensued between the two groups resulting in the Eikko being displaced from their land and seeking refuge at the cold peaks West of the Twin Rivers. A treaty was drawn by the two groups promising a future of peace. In this treaty, the Eikko agreed to not bear arms, to not cross East of the Twin Rivers and to not conspire against the Alerïan Colony. At this moment, the Eikko are suffering tremendously as they are experiencing sickness, anxiety, depression, starvation and extinction.

Songs of Aleria Location: CITY OF LASAIR

We have slayed the Giants and held against the Bear of the South. We have conquered the Mighty Moors and the Valiants of Valha. Even when the enemy was in our own cities, we prevailed. We are the Alerïans. We will protect the golden city till our final breath.”

City of Lasair is the heart of Alerïa named after its founder, Lasair the Enlightened. It stands at the Northern tip touching the Andean Sea which becomes the Eidar Ocean further West. City of Lasair‘s buildings reach the sky and it’s walls are shrouded in gold. Statues of marble stand 12 ft tall and the ceilings are painted depicted famous kings and queens of Alerïa’s past. The capital is home to poets, artists, musicians, astronomers, lovers and dreamers. It’s a city of great promise, unless you defy the laws. All must obey or they too will become an example.

Hi! I guess i’ll take this opportunity to fangirl over Kogon.

Kogon is the oldest government surpassing the height of the Giants who were defeated by Alerïa. Unlike the Giants, the Kogon continued to prosper and to this day, have remained unconquered.

Geography

Kogon is located between three seas: the Navoi Sea, the Kogon Sea and the Astrapian Sea. The Astrapian Mountains block Kogon from the rest of the region and has been a protective factor since no one has ever been able to cross the Mountains. a few Alerïan kings/queens have tried to conquer Kogon at the seas, but the sea serpents/dragons harbor there protecting the land. There is an opening by the Kogon Sea but the desert makes it difficult for those who seek to cross into Kogon.

Religion

The Kogon believe that water is the source of life. And that through her humans emerged. She is the Mother, who nourishes and provides sustenance. Hence, when a child is born, he is placed in the water for a few seconds and is baptized. When a person dies, the body is casted away into the ocean to return to the Mother. At the Summer Solstice, the Kogon celebrate their New Year and make offerings to the Mother. They throw their offerings into the sea for her to collect and save for their afterlife.

The Kogon believe the world will end in water. That the ice will melt and land will drown. During that time, The Kogon Warriors and Emperors who are frozen at the Cave of Takai will rise again and become the army of the Mother. The warriors will ride the Sea Dragons and protect the Mother. And the bodies of the Kogonenese that were buried in the water will be awakened by the Mother to serve her.

Politics

The Emperor (male or female) rules the land. He/she has a court of advisors including a guard. It is the duty of the court to offer counsel. When an emperor dies, the crown is passed onto the his/her first born son. Unless their is a claim made by another. In this case, the ‘usurper’ can fight for the throne. fighting means one must die and whoever lives takes the throne.

Kogon is strict about who it lets in and who it lets out. They have isolated themselves and their resources to protect from outside influence and threats.

Kogon Warriors are a class of warriors that defend the emperor and their home at all cost often sacrificing their own life. They are fierce, resilient and untamed.

Culture

Kogon culture is highly influenced by its religion. Mothers are the most respected in society and are seen as the wisest. Kogonese eat a lot of seafood, rice and noodles. The land is rich and excellent for harvesting and domesticating. Many of the poor are farmers. Green tea is a staple in every household and is often served to guests. Volcanic eruptions are considered a punishment sent by the Mother. Most children dream of becoming Kogon Warriors to defend the Mother, to wield a sword and to ride a sea dragon of their own. Kogon celebrations are a great joy. They usually include lanterns, fireworks, drums and dragon costumes.

Fashion

Men and women wear the Hanfu. Women wear it in light shades such as pastel pinks, baby blue or mint/pistachio. Wealthy usually carry an umbrella. The poor wear straw hats. The women usually leave their hair down but married women keep their hair in an updo. The men keep their hair long, sleek and matties men tie it back into a bun. kogon Warriors wear steel armor and carry a katana with a sea dragon insignia. The color scheme is Oxford blue, white and silver which are the colors of the Kogon flag and the Imperial Palace.

thanks for the ask! also tagging @inky-duchess (i think thats the rule?)

Songs of Aleria Locations: K O G O N

For the serpent of the sea, water is the source of life. If you remove the serpent from water, it will suffocate before dying. The Kogon, like the serpent, needs to be removed from its source of life. Only then will we have our victory.

Known for its traditional arts, tea ceremonies and dragons, KOGON is situated between three seas: the Astrapia Sea to the West, the Navoi Sea to the East and the Kogon Sea to the South. Historically, Kogon has used its strategic location to wade off foreign influence. With the help of the Sea Dragons and the Mother, the Kogonese have been unconquerable. The Kogonese remain rooted in their heritage as they strive for prosperity and balance. The fertile land of the region is bountiful for harvesting and its seas are excellent for fishing. The legacy of the Kogon Warriors continues to uphold the laws of the Kogon Empire allowing Kogon to to be an everlasting empire. To this day, Kogon has been undefeated practicing isolation to prevent outside influence from penetrating the Empire.
