so many places in greece and close to the capital have been burning for almost a week now. the wildfires set by organised arsons have spread uncontrollably and our firefighters and volunteers are simply not enough to contain these raging fires. many people were forced to evacuate but new fires keep starting constantly. the scenes are honestly apocalyptic and so disheartening. not even going to go into that whole the government is doing nothing talk… just.. you can find information on how to donate here and here or just spread awareness. thank you.

Two more medals today.

Miltos Tentoglou won the second gold medal for Greece this year, in men's long jump. But the most important thing is that he showed up in the presentation for the final like this:

That's how every Greek goes to grab a coffee at Mikel in the morning pandemic style (pink mask in the elbow and all). Like, honestly, I can’t stop laughing, the most YOLO Olympic champion ever

He is also the European champion but he looks like he walked in accidentally but was bored and decided to jump for the kicks and inexplicably got first place. I mean, he literally asked the Greek journalist on air: “Oh will the medal ceremony be in the afternoon? Do you know at what time?”

That move he made in the presentation is apparently a move from a famous anime with which Tentoglou showed his love for the host country (and anime).

Anyway, and then the probably most expected medal for this year, coming from Rio 2016 gold medalist, 3 times world champion and 5 times European champion Lefteris Petrounias in men's rings. This time a bronze, but Lefteris had also undergone a shoulder surgery. Petrounias promised to return for Paris 2024, to reclaim the gold medal and end his career on the high(est) note.

Btw I have heard him in interviews and he sounds like a really good and gentle guy.

IMPORTANT READ

What people inside and outside of Greece may not know / choose to ignore:

As Lefteris Petrounias (Greek Gold Olympian, Rio 2016, Men's Rings) had mentioned in front of the Minister of Sports, there has never been any support towards the athletes participating in National and International Events (such as the Olympics). Athletes mostly rely on their sponsors and/or working regular jobs to make ends meet.

Thodoris Iakovidis, Greek weightlifter (pictures below), burst into tears, as he could not bear the psychological pressure of HAVING to practice and win, while also having to work an over-40-hours-per-week job, and decided to quit weightlifting altogether.

He couldn't bear the pressure of what he had to sacrifice to work and practice, while seeing athletes of other teams getting supported so much by their countries.

Iakovidis quit at the 191 kilos attempt.

He admits that the Greek Olympic Committee tries to help as much as they can, but the financial help (€250 per month) isn't enough.

The Greek government hasn't helped its athletes financially or emotionally.

Pyrros Dimas (Greek ex-weightlifter, 3-time Gold Olympian, Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Bronze in Athens 2004) talked about how the athletes were suddenly cut off financial support years ago as a possible 'act of revenge'. He also noted that no athlete or person can live with only €250 and be expected to compete and win medals.

In reality, it's also an issue of the financial crisis that never let Greece breathe. All the sports facilities that were available to the athletes had to close down. Athletes have to find open spaces or rely on people providing them with gyms in order to be able to exercise and practice somewhere.

Before the 2016 Olympics, Anna Korakaki (Greek Gold Olympian, Rio 2016, 25 m shooting, Bronze Medal in 10 m shooting) had to practice in open fields, because she wasn't provided with a safe place to practice. Only now was she able to practice in a shooting range because of a generous donation.

Two Greek athletes participating in Tokyo 2020 for hammer throw (Michalis Anastasakis, Christos Frantzeskakis) had to practice literally in the middle of nowhere in their birthplace (Island of Crete), pulling ropes and nets around to make a functional practice space.

And that's just a few stories of what Greek athletes (with one or two known exceptions) have to go through to even make it to the Olympics. Many athletes did not manage to go through to the Olympics because they hadn't been able to practice as much as other athletes did.

Meanwhile, the minister of sports was given €20,000 budget just to take pictures and promote the 'journey' to Tokyo.

Scheduling this to reblog on the day before National Coming Out Day (Oct 11th).

Because if your aren’t ready yet, for any reason, that is your right to not come out yet.

If YOU are out but have a friend who is NOT, it is not your right to out them. Respect their wishes, respect their safety, respect their health.

Encouraging your friends by promising to stand with them when they come out: Good.

Bullying your friends by saying they owe it to the LGBTQIA+ community to come out: Bad.

It’s okay if someone isn’t ready yet.

As someone who was outed against my will LONG before it was safe for me to be out to my family, I’m gonna say this as loudly as I can:

You don’t HAVE to come out! To anyone! You don’t owe it to anyone. Nothing is more important than your safety. If it’s better for your situation to stay closeted, please do that!

Coming out should be a personal decision. It should be a choice you make because you feel you will be happier for it. It should be something you do when you believe it will enrich your life.
