Hey, I think the new Power Girl and Wonder Woman variant covers might be AI
look, I’m no artist, but I think I’m pretty decent at spotting AI “art” when I come across it. There’s usually just this weird look about it that causes me to raise a metaphorical eyebrow, and if I look closer, I can find the inconsistencies in it a real artist wouldn’t make.
Both of these variants were made by Daxiong, I’m not familiar with their artwork and tried looking them up and their usual style is very different than what they had this time around.
Let’s start with the Power Girl cover:
At first glance it looks fine, but if you look closer you can spot the inconsistencies
There are these weird ribbons? or hair? just popping up from her head and belt that kind of connect but are just confusing to look at
The belt itself is very inconsistent
The hair ends differently in places compared to the rest of it
There are lines in weird places
And for the Wonder Woman cover, I admit, I don’t think I spotted as many, but there are still areas where it looks weird
The lines on her “W” belt are inconsistent
The lines on her armband/gauntlet thing are all over the place with no coherence
And the symbols on her shield don’t really look like anything and they just fade away
Like I said, I’m no artist, but this looks like the work of AI to me.
I hope I’m wrong, I don’t want to see people using AI “art” at all, let alone professionals in the comics industry. But if this is actually AI, I don’t think people should buy these covers if the “artist” didn’t even think it was worth their time to actually put effort in and make them.
I wasn't really familiar with any of these, so I decided to look them up and here's the information I was able to find.
- John Byrne and Jim Shooter - "John Byrne was so pissed off at Jim Shooter (former editor in Chief at Marvel during most of the 80's) to the point where at a party, John Byrne made a giant pinata where he put a photograph of Jim Shooter's face on it and he BURNED IT WITH FIRE, pretending that it was Jim Shooter. . This story has been verified by several people, one of them being writer Peter David." I could not find anything with Peter David verifying this myself. But I did discover that Byrne has apparently been involved in a few swipes at Shooter in the comics. See here and here.
- Grant Morrison and Mark Millar - This came up in a Rolling Stones interview. Morrison had previously been a mentor to Millar, but when Millar started to become successful on his own, he cut ties to Morrison. There's a lot of speculation that Millar stole the idea for the ending for Superman: Red Sun from Morrison, but Morrison just says in this article: "...he was in denial that I’d been there, because I saw a lot of his work had been plotted or devised, even dialogue suggestions were done by me right up until the point of The Ultimates." But here's the good part: "He still lives in Glasgow, is there a chance of bumping into him? There’s a very good chance of running into him, and I hope I’m going 100 miles an hour when it happens."
- Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane - Mentioned in this Hollywood Reporter article. Apparently there was a lawsuit that went on for almost 10 years, though it was resolved in 2012. Like the original description says, it was basically over who owns certain characters that Gaiman had created for McFarlane's Spawn comic.
- Rick Remender and Hobo Piss - There's a r/HobbyDrama write about the situation here. Basically, Remender wrote a controversial X-Men scene where Havok says that he thinks the term "mutant" is offensive, referring to it as the "m-word" and requesting to be called by his name, instead. This scene received a lot of backlash that apparently led to Remender having a meltdown on Twitter. Thus the now deleted hobo piss tweet, with bonus shiny red dick tweet!
- Frank Miller & Tom King - I found a video of an interview with Tom King and Frank Miller, but I'm not sure if this is the right reference? Frank definitely does have a very annoyed expression whenever Tom King is talking and he shoots him down a few times as well. I'm hoping this is the video, as I feel like I've lost brain cells by watching it, and I would hate to waste those for nothing. I can't even really enjoy Frank low key roasting Tom, as they're both terrible people. Frank Miller might be worse as he wrote the horribly racist Holy Terror, but I guess it really depends on whether or not Tom King committed any war crimes while working as a counterterrorism CIA Officer.
- John Byrne & Gay Female OCs - I assume this is something he said in an interview, but I couldn't find it? If anyone has a link, please let me know. The weird thing is that technically this isn't true! John Byrne created Maggie Sawyer, a recurring side character in the Superman Comics who was a lesbian police officer. Most of the results for John Byrne and "lesbian/lesbianism" are talking about Maggie, though a few also talk about Northstar, who is generally considered the first gay superhero of any prominence. I did find plenty of articles talking about how he's transphobic, though!
In conclusion, ACWAB (All Comics Writers Are Bad). But at least sometimes they're funny about it.
Wonder Woman #5 Cover Art (Cardstock Variant by Leirix)
Was convinced this was AI art until I saw that it's an official variant cover by an actual artist. But what the fuck is up with Donna's thumb? And Diana's hand is not much better. And also the body of the horse is at a weird angle? If it's not AI art, it at least shares the tendency of AI art to look nice at first and then be increasingly more baffling the more you look at it.
Media can be improved by makign the protagonist a girl
psych is such a good take on a modern detective bc most detectives r like grrrr 😡 I’m an uptight grumpy goose who the world has worn down 😡 I’ve seen more terrible things than u can even imagine 😡 don’t insult my intelligence with your blathering. and shawn spencer, a bisexual adhd whirlwind w daddy issues, is like ‘ew a dead body. gross! let me put on a silly disguise and flirt with the suspects. maybe do a dance. by the way it was the nanny I knew that like ten hours ago but needed to dramatize the moment for the bit’
Do you think the kents are good liars
What if they gave Jaime Reyes' Blue Beetle a pair of antennae
Deranged about them❤️🔥
Congratulations to My Adventures With Superman (2023) on having the most accurate and unhinged depiction of a livestream chat on tv.
never ask comic book fans to recommend you stuff to read for their favorite character because they’ll say shit like “oh yea read these specific issues from more than three decades ago yes they’re no longer canon but it legitimately lends a better understanding to this character than what they have now. also read this critically acclaimed event only because it’s a key part of their character journey but don’t internalize it because it sucks”
sometimes i realize not everyone lives so deep in the comic book rabbithole as i do. they dont even know about superman and lex luthors biological son-clone thing. they dont even know there's more than one robin in batman. they dont even know the third one is canon bisexual and dating some guy named bernard. they dont know about batmans kids.
you guys dont even know about the hero with top surgery scars shown on page. they dont even know about batmans penis!!!!!!!!!!!!
image description: an edited version of xkcd's comic "average familiarity." two stick figures are having a discussion. the one on the left says "comics is so second nature to us comic autists so it's easy to forget that the average person only knows about superman's son with lex luthor and one or two of batman's children." the stick figure on the right adds "and his penis of course." and the one on the left replies "of course." it is captioned, "even when they're trying to compensate for it, experts in anything wildly overestimate the average person's familiarity with their field." end description.
Okay, so my own particular take on the most recent “liar vs. liar” thing in My Adventures with Superman:
I do rather think it has to do with the quality of lie that both Lois and Clark are willing to put up with.
For Lois, long-standing lies are the issue. She doesn’t like to be kept in the dark about things, because of just how much trauma that holds for her. Lies that seemingly hold no purpose except some form of “protection” from the truth—protection which she should have some right to decide if she needs in any case. The truth needs to be heard, on as grand a scale as possible, because that’s what people deserve. And short-term lies to help break a greater truth, ones which will be resolved anyway once the bigger lie is gone? That’s an acceptable sacrifice. So it’s fine to lie to some new (and decidedly inexperienced) colleagues if it means getting to the bottom of stolen tech that could endanger the city or the country or the world. Not so much for someone who she feels like she’s known forever (despite it only being a few weeks) to keep from her a secret that’s incredibly important to her.
For Clark, dangerous lies are the problem. And, to a certain extent, selfish ones. Some secrets need to be kept—sometimes for the sanity or even safety of those who might know them. How would it have benefitted a ten-year-old boy to learn he wasn’t human? How could his parents, or Jimmy, or Lois be (even a little) safe if his mere existence put a target on their backs? But hiding things for vainglory, for greed, for a chance to get ahead—no. That’s not fair. That’s an abuse of something he’s had to do, his whole life. An abuse of the secrets that need to be kept. So keeping his secrets from one more person, no matter how much he cares about her? It’s not great—he even tried to tell her the truth—but it would only hurt everyone he loved if it got out, which is what she repeatedly said that she wanted to happen. (The it getting out bit, not the hurting loved ones bit.) It’s worse when it’s a lie to two new coworkers, potentially costing them their jobs, to get something that will only really benefit yourself.
…the thing is, I don’t think it’s that hard to explain this to either of them. Once cooler heads prevail, and they both realize they’ve hurt the other. Because fundamentally, they’re both capable of…well, maybe not breaking the rules they live by, but allowing for exceptions. Respecting private matters and having a little faith. Because they’re both fundamentally good people. And they care about each other.
So here’s to My Adventures with Superman, telling us a balanced story about two people who hate liars but who sometimes have to lie, and to a (please, please, let these lovebirds get back on track) successful resolution next episode.
…now, what poor old Jimmy is going to make of this whole debacle is just a teensy bit harder to gauge.
