Hi! I was wondering, would Ridge and Brolga be Indigenous/Aboriginal? Just asking because Ridge has darker fur to the other Tasmanian Tigers

Yes, in my head, all the thylacines are, but native species is probably a better term to use for them.

If you had the chance, would you make Crinoline Crime Club go multimedia? Like a TV, web or even a video game series?

Avatar

Easy, short answer - Yes, in a flash. :)

For now, it's only comics as I focus on building out the characters world a bit more. Then I'll fall back on my day job skills as an award-winning game developer to... make a game? :D

A new cover illo for the next Crinoline Crime Club comic, "Liberty, Rivalry and Fraternity", which I'm working on at the moment. It's an homage to "The Reluctant Bride" by Auguste Toulmouche.

did you ever expected to end up as a game developer? what was your crowning achievement in that field throught the years in your view?

No back when I was starting out games didn't feel like a thing that was made locally (even though there was Melbourne House). I studied animation back in the late 80s hoping to get to make sci-fi anime. Swerved into comics for a bit but pre-internet the distance of Australia from anything really did make it hard to work from here.

It was in the early 90s that we just decided to pigheadedly give it a go and start up our own company. So I guess that's one. 😊

Here's some more that young me would have found nuts.

  • Had a game published and got to work with my favorite 16-bit devs - Bitmap Bros (they half-owned Renegade who published Flight of the Amazon Queen)
  • EA pushing TY (Before they were a giant they were the cool kids so for nostalgia that was nice)
  • Activision Distributing TY 3 - ALso cool kids once.
  • A career achievement award from the Australian Game Developers conference. Also a few for TY's shorts.
  • Making Blade Kitten and getting it published by Atari (OK not the "real" Atari but it was nice to have the classic name at the start of my game.
  • As I like to say "Buying an Atari" when we took over Melbourne House from them.
  • TY 4 with Microsoft. We really did manage to get our original; IP with some big names.
  • Still own the rights to TY and BK.
  • Making Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Star Wars was a big driving force in my creative life. Also they made figures of my designs - so bonus points there.
  • Getting TY onto the Switch. I love being able to put the Switch logo at the start of TY videos :D

So yeah that's a big crown I guess.

If I had to pick just one, it would be that I even got to do any of this at all.

A few months back I discovered that my Tumblr wasn't showing up in any searches. Which is you know, pretty useless. I mean, you could search for Blade Kitten or TY and none of my posts would show up. I put a ticket in before I had my surgery and three months later I got a response that my blog was erroneously marked as NSFW and that it's now fixed.

It is indeed, now fixed. Thanks.

I recently bought Ty 1, 2, and 4 on switch. (though I already own 1-3 on steam lol) and I've been going back and doing what I didn't as kid, which is do 100% runs on all the games. I just gotta say, the craftyrang is my all time fave. I'm playing 2 right now and I'm having so much fun with how goofy powerful those rangs are haha

Good to hear you're having fun with the Switch ports. I'm really happy that we got the chance to get most of them on there.

In the Art of Ty the Tasmanian Tiger art book, on the page with the Frills you mention their designs are used from an old college project. Any chance you have any pictures from the project? It would be amazing to see them!

Thanks for sharing your works 💕

This is it, from around 1988-1989ish? I was in art college studying animation at the time. The assignment was to design some mascot thing.

Fun fact: This was inked on tracing paper and colored on the back with markers.

Here's a little kit love for you as I recover from my broken heart (I mean that quite literally - I had a triple bypass last month. I'm doing ok now)

Avatar

Who else had major heart surgery on their bingo card for 2023?

Anyway, I made it through that and am looking forward to creating again in the new year. Here's a look back at some of the stuff I did this past year.

Happy New Year!

Okay so apparently there was going to be a mutant Frill x Quinkan (Frillquin) hybrid in TY 3, and like, oh my God, that's so COOL?? Like, who did this, Karlos or the Quinking, or a third party? It would have been pretty scary if there were very few of these guys (unlike the Zombie Frills who are everywhere and controlled by the Quinkan) just hidden away in dark corners, being larger than normal Frills but smaller than Über Frills, and have them flip between running on all fours and walking/attacking on two legs.

Also, uuuhhh, @spacecaptsteve HD TY3 on PS4 when???

They were actually designed AFTER TY 3.

TY3 PS4... Don't ask me, I'm recovering from major heart surgery.

Recovering

So last Monday, the 4th of December I had my triple bypass surgery. They took 5 grafts from my leg and fixed up the clogged arteries in my heart. All went well and I was discharged from the Hospital Friday evening. I've been home for the last week now recovering and while it is slow going I'm making progress every day.

I'm frustrated that I can't really do any drawing as lifting my arms to draw on the Cintiq is a) painful and b) tiring. (My sternum got cracked open for the op and is healing after being wired back together again. It sounds a lot ickier than it is.) I've also got a huge scar down my left leg where they took the artery material from. That's fine, a mix of itchy and num, and my leg looks like I'm in the late stages of zombification. (It's all good my doc checked me over the other day.)

So yeah, basically just sitting around for the most part catching up on TV series and resting (like I'm supposed to be).

Oh yeah, they showed me a diagram of what was done along with blockage percentages - I think I got very lucky that they found this stuff early. I'm pretty sure I'd be majorly screwed in a few years if they hadn't.

So it looks like you're all stuck with my crap for a few more years.
