As someone who is half white, and white-passing, white people have subjected me to jokes about asians that are always racist. Always. When I speak up, it’s always, “It was just a joke,” or, “You’re asian?”, like their ignorance of my ethnicity excuses their jokes.
My non-white friends jokes about white people have never been racist. Usually, it’s just something pointing out my whiteness. Gringa. White girl. They’re words said without intent to harm. They’re words that don’t perpetuate negative stereotypes with lasting consequences.
In recent years, as a way of turning the tables, I’ve made jokes about white people in front of my white friends and family members.
It makes them uncomfortable, but you know what it doesn’t do? It doesn’t get them beat up or killed for the color of their skin. It doesn’t lose them job opportunities. It doesn’t make their cultural background seem uncouth. Dirty.
