Here’s something cute

When lockdown happened in the UK it happened very suddenly. At the law firm I work at, our office building emptied overnight when everyone was told to work from home. No time to clear our desks, no time to bring office plants home.

Fast forward three and a half months - everyone assumes that their plants are dead.

But then! An email goes round! It’s turns out that one of our security guards is a florist, and -

-the security team has moved EVERY SINGLE PLANT from all 12 FLOORS of our office building into the cafeteria. It’s been turned into a temporary greenhouse. Cacti and succulents and spider plants and terrariums and potted ferns

AND! Each plant has been INDIVIDUALLY LABELLED by hand with post-it notes with name and desk location so the plants can go home after lockdown ends

To give some indication of the scale of the endeavour:

If you zoom into the centre right photo you can see one of our security team happily waving

The plants are being taken care of tenderly. They get sun and water and are spending happy times with other plant friends

In the supermarket

You see the same people everyday. You recognize familiar faces, but even strangers start to get familiar after a while. You barely know anything about them, but you know the woman with two purses does the shopping for her sister as well. You know the man with his moustace buys two breads and some fruit every morning - he know even started saying ‘see you tomorrow’, that’s how familiar he got. There’s another man with a moustache and grey hair that covers his ears, who comes by every day to buy thirthy cans of the cheepest beer. There’s a couple who does their shopping together, the man is always wearing a blue pullover whereas his wife wears a checked jacket. You see them almost every day, but the lady doesn’t say a word, not once. She never fully gets her wallet out of her purse and only once she gave you a very little smile, though you wonder why she hasn’t ever spoken a word. You see the same woman with an overloaded shopping cart, who buys at least three bottles of wine every time. And you see the old lady with her two grandchildren, who are always arguing. You remember who collects the stickers and who doesn’t. You recognize the pretty girl with her red lips and the cleaning lady who always passes by to buy her lunch. You notice the same people buy a plastic bag for their groceries every time, while by now they must have got a giganitc collection of those plastic shopping bags. You notice the pretty girl with freckles, who always accompanies her mother when she goes for groceries and that she’s always staring at you, the whole time. There are the people who make it a game to buy as many goods from the brochure with weakly reductions. And there’s a squad of old ladies who sit in the cafetarie the whole day. You’re tranced by the beeps of the scanner while all these people pass, and you slowly get to know them just a little.

You wonder how strange it is that after a whole year, the same familiar faces still come by, although some of them have changed. The man with his moustache doesn’t buy the same goods anymore and he’s hardly familiar anymore. He doesn’t even speak to you anymore, not the way he used to last summer. Though the woman with her two purses still does the shopping for her sister as well. The couple is there again, almost every day. The man still wearing a blue pullover, the woman still not speaking, nor taking her wallet out of her purse, nor smiling while today you saw a tear falling out of the corner of her eye. You kept smiling and wished her a good day, whereas you wonder if she’s actually okay. You should’ve asked her. The pretty girls you haven’t seen yet, but the cleaning lady still comes over for her lunch. People still buy as many reducted products as possible, buy a million of plastic bags and collect stickers. And the ‘old lady squad’ is still sitting in the cafetaria all day, enjoying their coffee and now chatting with you as a friend whenever you walk past them. Other, new faces pass by too and slowly they are starting to get familiar too.

The mystery of the old woman who never speaks: she suffers from dementia
