What are some Choices books that you feel if they came out today, they’d probably be single LI books? Because I've given it some thought and I'd say some of them might have been:

I also wonder if they’d have made Open Heart a single LI book (they practically did anyway) but the thing about OH is that it’s not mandatorily a romance book, so for that they’d have had to make the romance a main part of the story.

But at the same time! Are there any recent(ish) Choices books that you feel would have been multiple LI books in the past? Because I’ve got thoughts about that, too, but the only thing I've got so far is:

And then sometimes I've wondered if TCH (b1 at least, if they hadn't planned it as a series) would have let you choose whether you ended up with Kieran or a Sun Court LI (potentially Radiance if they weren't a traitor and dead—moreso because of the dead part because even as a traitor they could've had the same b2 arc they gave Aerin in Blades 2, since Radiance is already a copy of b1 Aerin), but idk, probably not, since the series hinges so much on Kieran being in love with MC and them having that Beauty and the Beast thing going on.

How do I know this? Because an “almost touch” almost destroyed me.

Drake Walker and I have been circling around each other for years. The furtive glances, the flirty double entendre’s, the way his eyes follow me everywhere.

What If Choices' Race-customizable LIs Had Surnames Reflective Of Their Ethnicity?: An Experiment Just For FUn (Part 1/3)

As we're probably all aware, Choices has been going ham on their formula of "one LI whose appearance is choosable" for the past few years (ever since they started drawing criticism for narratively favoring white male LIs, i.e., when the Ramsey bubble finally burst; draw your own conclusions), and these LIs almost always have canon names or default names associated with white Anglo Americans. This is one of several reasons these LIs are described by players as "white-coded", or written as if they are white men with any changes reduced to a one-line afterthought, which kind of nullifies the point of romancing an LI of color.

Getaway Girls impressed me with branching that gave two of the six Jordan appearance options (the ones described in the asset files as "Indian") the surname Paudwal, as opposed to the other options that had the surname Parker. And then they NEVER DID IT AGAIN (ingnoring Kiss of Death cause it was a weird case I don't know how to categorize)!!

So here's me assigning surnames to race-custom LIs of other books because it's fun for me:

Joaquin Route Endings.

Hi, everyone! As promised, I wanted to share two Joaquin route endings I wrote for, Laws of Attraction. Both endings are based on the continuation of the romance route PB wrote for Joaquin. Each has minor sexual content but contains mostly fluff. 

I used she/her pronouns and the default name suggested at the beginning of the series for MC, Quinn Michaels. In these versions, Quinn is platonic with Gabe and Aislinn.

It’s been a long time since I sat and wrote anything outside of college psychology papers. Lol. I truly hope everyone enjoys it!

Ending 1- Finding Our Match: Quinn stays at the Brass Monkey after Joaquin leaves. He visits her office on Monday after his first day at Ricci & Associates. (2,343 words)

Ending 2- A Bright Future Ahead: Quinn goes after Joaquin when he leaves the Brass Monkey. They decide to spend the rest of the evening together. (2,935 words)

Series - TRR's Alternative LIs: The "Romances" that Didn't Happen

TW: Mentions of OH2's handling of Rafael (though not in detail), racism.

To be clear, this introductory essay isn't directly related to the rest of this series. TRR operated very differently to the other Choices series' when it came to alternative LIs, so a lot of what I'll discuss here won't actually apply to its specific romance mechanics.

Still, it is important to explore what it means to give an LI an alternative romance in PB, and for that we need to look at what the approach to such romances were. Both in the past, and after TRR became popular. Looking into this gives us a general idea of which specific LIs got an alternative romance, why just them and not others, and what such developments said about the way the writing team viewed a particular character.

Oh my God Raphael! He was my chosen LI in open heart. I mean he is exactly my type and every single possible way. The moment I saw him step out of that ambulance I was like please God let him be a love interest. And then he was and I was happy. And then suddenly he ghosted me for another woman? It was such a shock and a gut punch when I opened the next book and couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. It wasn't the same for me after that and I didn't go back to him because I felt betrayed by him. I was pretty bad about the writing at the time. I ended up with Bryce but I always meant to go back and replay with Raphael. But to be honest what they did with him kind of took the enjoyment of the entire game out of it for me.

I'm not even going to get into the whole cluster fuck of turning him from a paramedic into a physical therapist.... Those are not the same educational backgrounds like they made it out to be. Probably a minor point that doesn't matter to most people but that kind of complete lack of even the most rudimentary research drives me bananas.

But after reading this now I kind of want to go back and replay it with Raph. Poor guy never got a fair shake.

@angelasscribbles I agree! In a lot of the cases of LIs deemed "unpopular", they're never given a fair deal from the start, and then that "lack of popularity" is what is used to excuse either blatant negligence or rotten treatment. What they intended to do to Raf definitely was that horrible mindset taken to very damaging extremes. And yes definitely with regards to his new job in OH3, it felt like they cobbled together something last minute instead of actually thinking about it, for obvious reasons ☹️

It makes sense when you realize they never intended for him to even be in book three.

ride or die, the mirror, and the narrative foil trope: the essay

written for the final day of @rodappreciationweek 2021. here i’ll be discussing ride or die’s use of the image of the mirror and the use of the narrative foil trope, specifically with mc versus five characters: logan, colt, mona, jason, and ingrid.

ride or die arguably is one of the best choices stories which make use of the narrative foil trope. others that come to mind are blades of light and shadow and surprisingly, foreign affairs (which i’ve touched a bit on here, but it’s executed far more weakly than blades or rod, mostly due to the storyline being a standalone when it was obviously planned to not be).
