Title: i've been waiting for you (i am here)

Fandom: Bleach

Character/Pairing: Hirako Shinji & Kyouraku Shunsui, Coyote Starrk/Kyouraku Shunsui, Hirako Shinji, Kyouraku Shunsui, Coyote Starrk

Rating: T

Word Count: 5,368

Summary: For the first time in living memory, the Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13 takes a leave of absence, date of return unknown.

Sometimes, Shinji really wishes Ukitake hadn’t kicked the bucket, and not just because he’d been a friend. Without him, there’s no one left who can ride herd on Kyouraku, which leads to situations like this for Shinji - on the unfortunate account of being the captain with the next longest tenure - to clean up.

Of course, in this one situation, perhaps even Ukitake wouldn’t have been able to stop Kyouraku. But at least then it also wouldn’t have been Shinji’s problem. Kyouraku owes him a lifetime’s supply of good alcohol for this.

so in the bad future, did ichigo ever learn about the bank account?

Avatar

Lol uhhh he probably found out about it from one of his Shinigami friends mentioning it in passing, nobody goes out of their way to tell him because they all thought someone else had already told him 😂

It's not like he could bring any of it back in time though, or rather the Soul King wouldn't think of 💸 petty mortal things like money 💸

And honestly Ichigo didn't need it in the previous timeline where room and board was all provided for him, and even if he wanted to buy something in particular, someone Kisuke was always on hand to buy it for him. And then in this new timeline he has the Shiba Clan and a proper job, but occasionally he likes to bring it up with Starrk as something of an inside joke, like "damn I'm not even paid for dealing with this shit anymore".

(Of course the other inside joke they like to crack between them is how Starrk's never had to worry about money because Shunsui gave his wife Starrk free access to all his bank accounts basically right from the get-go, so between that and the fact that he'd spent his entire life before that in a place where money would've been worth less than the sand, the concept of money has always been a bit skewed for Starrk lmaooo.)

Do you think you'll ever collect all your Tumblr exclusives on AO3 as well?

I do kind of want to sometimes, it's just that a lot of them are sort of half fic, half stream of consciousness. I think AO3 is okay with that but it's still a bit weird to me and idk if readers would like that anyway. Plus some pieces are really short because they're more succinct replies to asks, but it's still part of the AU, but it's not a full part, so I don't even list those on my masterlist, I only tag them as part of the same AU, but I also sometimes refer to them when I write more parts, so... it would just be difficult to put that on ao3 too lol.

Idk I'll think about it, maybe I'll put the main parts of at least a few AUs and link the corresponding tumblr tag in the notes or something in case some ppl want to read absolutely everything.

Your latest time-travel verse made me rewatch Kyoraku vs Starrk battle over Fake Katakura.

I have to say, over the years, I have forgotten how sad that battle is. The way Starrk mourns even Barragan's death and loses his (already small to begin with) desire to fight after it... The only reason the guy followed Aizen was because Aizen gave him... friends😭 A pack. The only reason he fought was to protect that pack. Doesn't matter if that pack consisted of some shady individuals. It was his. The first and only one he got in all his 1000+ years of existence. He had no desire to strike down his enemies - didn't kill Ukitake, proposed Love and Rose to retreat with their lives... In a way, he and Ichigo are very much alike in that sense.

Starrk was too honorable and naive and paid for that.

And Shunsui killed Lilynette😭 It is so heartrending when Starrk calls out to her with no answer...

Shunsui's philosophy, on the contrary, allows him "to be evil" in order to win. Yes, he does not like war, just like Starrk, but IMHO, "as soon as the war starts both sides are at fault" does not mean Shunsui is saying that both sides are wrong in the war and to not fight till you completely disable / kill your opponent. I think, to paraphrase, it means: "As soon as the war start, to win, both sides *will* have to be evil / There are no good people in a war because winning a war requires one to do evil things, so someone who were maybe a good person will have to become evil to win". This philosophy, basically, is "to unbound his hands" (as we say in our language, meaning when something is used to make a person free to act), a workaround that allows him to be ruthless to his opponents, despite his pacifistic nature.

Anyway, emotional rant over. I guess I just wanted to share my pain🥲 I just hope Shunsui killing a part of Starrk's soul and the only family he had will somehow be addressed between them in the future in your fic's universe. I think it's just too huge to leave out. And the only way I can see Starrk never saying anything at all to his Shunsui in TYBW timeline - is because he is THAT much of a sucker for pain and/or THAT much desperate for a genuine connection with somebody.

Starrk is just a really tragic character with a really tragic arc, canonically he was never meant to be saved or have a chance at something better.

I don't know if I'd call him particularly honourable, if only because that doesn't seem like the sort of thing he'd really think about and adhere to as a Hollow who'd spent his whole life in a place like Hueco Mundo, not in the same way a Shinigami would. I think it was more that he just didn't want to kill anyone when he'd already killed so many without ever having a choice in the matter, and now that he did, he didn't want to keep doing that if he didn't absolutely have to. He was definitely a bit naive about it because it was war, and he was up against one of the most powerful and ruthless Shinigami in existence. The moment he decided to hold back, he was destined to lose.

For Shunsui, I agree, he believes that to win a war, people have to get their hands dirty, and you can't do that and still remain "good". I also think he thinks that it's disrespectful to not do everything in his power to win, because even if that means throwing away his honour, to do anything less means risking the lives of those he's fighting that war for.

Which ties into why I personally think Starrk doesn't really blame Shunsui for Lilynette's death. I think Starrk is smart enough and similar enough to Shunsui to understand him. And why blame Shunsui when he can blame himself? He's the one who held back from the start, he didn't fight as hard as he could, he even had the chance to kill Shunsui if he'd just gone down to finish the job after shooting him instead of just backing off after disabling him, or he could've even shot him somewhere more leathal like the back of the head instead of the shoulder/chest, because at their level, which Shinigami or Hollow wouldn't survive a simple injury like that? He would've also been able to sense full well that Shunsui's reiatsu signature hadn't disappeared. So that choice is on him, and he paid for it with Lilynette's life.

I also think Starrk didn't have much conviction or resolve, I mean I don't think most of the Espada really believed in Aizen's cause, they just followed him for more power or because Aizen tricked them or forced them, and prob with a side of hypnosis to pave the way. So Starrk didn't even have anything concrete to believe in and fight for aside from a debt he felt he had to repay, and that was quickly wearing away when he saw how Aizen didn't give a shit about them.

So overall, he went into battle against Shunsui without any desire to fight or kill because he thought he didn't really have anything he wanted enough to fight for, right up until he lost Lilynette and realized that yeah he did have something precious to lose after all. In contrast, Shunsui was fighting for Soul Society and to protect his fellow Shinigami, and at the time, he definitely understood that far better than Starrk did.

If Starrk had survived, I think he would've understood that too, plus he just doesn't have the kind of temper that lashes out and casts blame on others due to excess emotion; rather, he has the sort of analytical mind to comprehend the cause and effect of things pretty instantly. That would all play a big part in why he wouldn't blame Shunsui for doing what he had to do to take Starrk out. He and Lilynette were one, Shunsui would've had to kill both of them sooner or later, otherwise he might as well lie down and give up, Starrk wasn't exactly an opponent he could take it easy with.

In the time travel verse here, Idk if I'd make it a particularly huge thing, because for Starrk it's been like 10+ years, I imagine he's laid that ghost to rest a long time ago even if the loss still hurts sometimes, plus it's not TBTP!Shunsui who killed her, and i think he would've hashed out the issue with TYBW!Shunsui already at the beginning. Of course, TBTP!Shunsui is bound to find out about it eventually, which could be interesting to poke at.

But in Take What's Broken (Make It Whole), it'll definitely come up sooner or later. Even if Starrk doesn't bring it up first, Shunsui will, and even if there's no blame, I imagine they would at least have to talk about it going forward.

" Kisuke's observant as fuck and Ichigo's actually really bad at staying away from this one mad scientist who created him and weaponized him and pointed him at the enemy but also followed right after him [...]. So even a hundred years in the past was never going to prevent Kisuke from gravitating to Ichigo" - I'm sorry, I'm just imagining Kisuke's confusion at the odd Shiba and the mental acrobatics he is doing to understand him. Hiyory just want them to fuck and put her out of her misery

Hiyori is the real MVP, enduring all the bullshit at the Twelfth, especially when Kisuke stops only obsessing over science and starts obsessing over science and the crazy Shiba constantly breaking into their compound and dragging Kisuke out of his labs for a spar or lunch or whatever like it's his right, and Kisuke just lets him. The day her dumbass captain starts skiving off work to stalk the kid is the day Hiyori pulls out the rulebook to check up on the laws for fraternization (thankfully few, subjectively speaking; disturbingly few, objectively speaking) and also the laws on making eyes at a kid from a noble clan (varies depending on the clan, although generally speaking, no officially recorded spouse has ever been from the Rukongai, and they're all the result of one political arrangement or another; the Shiba Clan's the best about it in that their members in the more recent couple hundred years were at least allowed to choose their own match and bring them home for approval, and the clan head and elders were generally agreeable about it so long as there were some benefits involved).

Now Hiyori doesn't know much about her dumbass captain but she's pretty fucking sure he's not only from the Rukongai, but he's also a former assassin and a creepy scientist and has like nothing going for him except a captaincy he doesn't even seem to care about. His social skills are in the dumps, his capacity for honesty and moral integrity is next to nonexistent, he's a workaholic who enjoys dissecting corpses for breakfast and stashing the parts in the freezers next to the ice-cream, his right-hand scientist is a clown with even less morals than him, and he may or may not be holding an unrequited torch for the Shihouin clan head. 0/10 would not marry. Shiba Kaien would have to be mentally deranged to agree to this match.

The thing is though, she's also heard stuff about the newest Shiba, one of them being that Kaien has zero control over him. The guy will do what he wants and damn the consequences, especially when those consequences would probably be things he allegedly doesn't care about like cuts in clan stipend allotment and disownment. Also, Kaien's a soft touch and likes this new cousin a lot and would most likely yield instead of push the point if Shiba Ichigo really insists.

So basically it all comes down to what Shiba Ichigo wants, and Hiyori's pretty damn certain she can take a good guess. She's less certain her dumbass captain can, but she thinks it means something too that for the first time since she met him, Urahara's actually taken interest in something outside of his research.

Beyond that, she doesn't actually care enough to matchmake or whatever. The Shiba kid can get Urahara out of his labs and even into his office to work on his paperwork, if only so he'll have it out of the way when Ichigo swings by, and that's all she cares about. She just wants to make sure this whole thing won't blow up in their faces and possibly get Urahara demoted because she'll be damned if she has to field another new captain, one who might be worse than her dumbass captain, which she would've said was impossible even just two years ago but she has unfortunately met Kurotsuchi now.

Everything is in line with the rules though so that's that. She has no interest in sticking her nose any farther into whatever's going on between those two, even if she does wish they would hurry up and get their shit together because her dumbass captain is kind of gross every time Ichigo is in the vicinity and he gets all sparkly-eyed at him.

she def don't get along with Koyonagi. Honestly he prob low-key wants to kill her just cuz it's offensive to him that she's younger and has a shorter tenure but she's talented enough to be the Kidou department head even tho he's the former Kidou Corps Commander, while she doesn't care and also low-key ridicules the shit out of him cuz like she doesn't know what happened to get him demoted to Academy teacher but she's like "guy struts around like he's better than everyone else just cuz he's a genius with kidou and thinks everyone's scared of him but he can't even commit crime successfully". And now they both have even more reason to hate each other cuz Starrk annoys the shit out of Koyonagi and Shiina doesn't appreciate her favourite student being harassed.

She's so precious, I love her haha. I also really love how you can just create these wonderfully diverse OCs at the drop of a hat. I hope to see more Shiina in the future!

Lol thank you I'm glad you like her! She practically wrote herself, and her personality came out really strong and straightforward. I was a little worried at the beginning because she ended up also being a Kidou-focused character like Koyonagi, but then she started talking and I was like okay never mind they'd prob kill each other for a corn chip 😂😂

thinking about the kyouraku/fujiwara ppl looking at starrk and going "wow, can we trade out asuka for him instead? It's not fair she's the one actually blood-related" lol

Lmaooo that’s so mean 😂😂 but honestly yeah they probably would secretly think that. Although if they really disowned her, Asuka would probably celebrate after she got over the shock. Like she grew up in a society where being nobility is The Thing to be, and being disowned is Bad, so even if she doesn’t like her family much, it’s still her clan, and without that support, she’d have nothing. She’d prob be pretty devastated if it happened before she made friends with Ichigo and the others. Now she has other people she can depend on so she wouldn’t be all alone and left to fend for herself.

With Ichigo training her though, I imagine her clan would be a little less disapproving. Like they still don’t really care about her but she’d at least be less of a disappointment. Right up until they realize she doesn’t want anything to do with them anymore, which means she won’t bring them any benefits lol.

The way I characterize Asuka is that she honestly isn’t that talented, probably just a bit above average, and her lack of confidence only made everything worse. But she works really hard, and she desperately wants to be more than just the illegitimate child nobody in her clan except Shunsui cares about, wants more for her life than having some marriage dictated for her, and drive like that can be pretty powerful. She just needed someone in her corner to give her a kind word and a hand up, and in this timeline at least, Ichigo came along at just the right time.

i feel like aizen would point out the similarity by commenting on how pets and owners can come to resemble each other...

Honestly there were probably a lot of snide comments in the early days about Starrk, who wasn't even "brought in" by Ichigo so he'd be viewed with more suspicion. Except then there's Shunsui inexplicably getting into figurative fistfights with anybody stupid enough to spout off within his hearing range (shadows are so efficient at scaring the crap out of ppl, they're everywhere; meanwhile Starrk's like "maybe don't be so heavy-handed Soutaichou, I don't care anyway and aren't you supposed to be a thousand years old, act your age" while Shunsui's just "this is my age, I'm a spry thousand-year-old" 😂 he can probably tell Starrk's equal parts confused and pleased about it even if he's also sensible, and that only encourages him lol). Let's just say ppl learned pretty quickly to shut up, and honestly there were bigger problems to worry about than Shunsui's love life. The few who pushed just a bit too far - like Aizen - only pushed that far once. Shunsui made sure of that.

Anonymous asked:

now I'm just picturing starrk just going to hueco mundo and digging himself six feet underground to take a nap in the sand whenever things get too much lol

Starrk would totally go for it, 10/10 sounds super peaceful 😂

Shunsui on the other hand prob wouldn't be too chill about that lmao. Starrk's Hierro should still work though. But Shunsui doesn't know about that.

Anonymous asked:

is lilynette in starrk's zanpakutou as a spirit??? 👀

No.

😂

Not... exactly. Lilynette as she was in canon is gone. Sorry not bringing her back. I personally think her death would be a major part of Starrk's growth (not just in terms of power lol) if he were to survive the Winter War, something like "not being strong might mean being able to gain people you can grow close to and love, but being weak might mean you can't even protect the loved ones you already had".

I've implied that Shunsui's taught Starrk a lot, not even on purpose most of the time, just from their interactions and from Starrk watching him. Not all of those lessons were during the Quincy War. And Starrk certainly learned very well what happens when you half-ass a battle just because you don't like to fight. And some of the points from his "essay" definitely stemmed from that.

Anyway, I haven't actually hammered out all the details of his Zanpakutou yet, I have general ideas for parts of it, and more specific stuff for his Bankai in particular, but it's a work in progress so I won't expound on it here, and it might be a while yet before I really get into it (@the other anons too who sent in asks about his Zanpakutou lol, sorry you'll have to wait for that reveal).

In the Ichigo & Starrk time travel 'verse I'm just picturing Ichigo registering for the academy like "I'm Ichigo. From the rukongai. No last name" and then kaien popping up like "he's a Shiba!!!" And the people there looking at each other and whispering like "ohhhh he wants to be independent and not rely on his family name!! How sweet!!!" and then Ichigo just sighing. XD

LMAO with his luck, this is exactly what happened.

Meanwhile Starrk's over there in the corner filling out his application forms and thanking every god he wants to beat up I find it rly funny to imagine he has this passive-aggressive grudge against Mimihagi for a variety of reasons that he in no way, shape, or form resembles any of the five big clans. But it would also be really funny to me if people at the admin desk looked at him, and then looked twice, and then looked thrice, and then be like "You sure you're not a Kyouraku?", because let's face it, he really does look a bit like Shunsui. Like it's not immediately noticeable the way Ichigo is with the Shibas, but if Starrk and Shunsui showed up and claimed they were blood-related, probably no one would doubt it.

#bleach#kurosaki ichigo#coyote starrk#kyouraku shunsui#shunstarrk#myscrap#ichigo & starrk time travel verse#ok lbr out of the entire bleach cast who else would make the most sense to have two blades for their Zanpakutou in sealed form?#like even in canon Starrk was a dual wielder from the start (Kubo sure understood his audience when he threw him and Shunsui together lmao)#technically you could argue that even as an arrancar the “sealed state” of his Zanpakutou was already two “blades” him and Lilynette#because his power was never sealed in the swords that either of them had those were basically just decoration#so in this AU once he evolved enough and his soul was whole enough to produce a real Zanpakutou ofc it would manifest as a daishou pair#anyway this was fun to think about#and again it doesn't exactly fit with what i've written so far for this AU but you can just go with whichever version you feel like lol#also did i create yet another OC out of the blue? yes yes i did. i suppose we'll see if i do anything with her. fingers crossed for no lmao#i was going to make her a katori but then i was like cross be a little less obsessed with shunsui not everything has to tie back to him#so i just made up a name but who she is and what's her background idk tell me wat you think of her i guess#i do headcanon starrk is a natural at kidou because both kidou and ceros are basically reiatsu manipulation when it comes down to it#and starrk could fire ceros instantaneously all damn day from any part of his body without moving a single finger#i think that that control and skill would translate to kidou
