Kell from the Shades of Magic series
I did a bad and stayed up really late to finish this
Started out using a photo reference, but then I kinda branched out and did my own thing
Idk I’m mostly proud of it but there are still a bunch of things that bug me so I’m just cutting myself off from working on it
So pleased to finally be finished!! This is the full video–just the first verse + chorus–but the full song works really well for Six of Crows and you should listen to it! And also read the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo because those are them Good Books. uOu/
Some notes: Wylan’s burning a letter and yep, that’s his dad. Yep, that’s Jarl Brum’s gloved hand that appears before the wolf. Inej’s knives should’ve been dark for maximum stealth, I just liked the shine too much. In retrospect, I wish I’d given Kaz a proper limp.
Programs Used: Toon Boom Studio 4.5, Adobe Photoshop CS6 Song: Trouble by Valerie Broussard (available on Spotify!)
movie tropes that will never get old to me:
- a thing happens + two people exchanging money in the back
- fourth wall breaking
- “give up all your weapons” and that one guy that spends the entire evening taking his weights worth out his pockets
- *a terribly loud crash* meowing/ car sirens heard offscreen
- alternatively: a terribly loud crash and one of the characters going “oops” in the most casual voice
- “fuck you” “well if you insist”
character being all “you expect me to do X?” Gilligan Cut to character doing X
- the squad gets captured and interrogated separately, and they’re all telling equally terrible, completely contradictory lies
- people completely missing the completely unsubtle, very visible dangerous thing in the room with them
- alternatively, people absolutely seeing the completely unsubtle, very visible dangerous thing in the room with them and just not giving a shit
- bonus points if it’s a beleaguered minimum wage employee who just goes about their business like “yep same shit as always”
- someone pretending they don’t know another character is eavesdropping, only to casually reveal at the end of the scene that they know (*leaving* “tell tom that he can come out now” *tom drops from the ceiling in spy gear, irritated*)
- choosing to deal with the villain by just leaving them alone in a room with another character
- the “hands go down” trope
- example: “any questions?” *everyone’s hands go up* “…that AREN’T sarcastic?” *everyone’s hands go down*
how could all y'all forget “ACT NATURAL!”

i wonder if magic is real, but only in a really mundane way.
when i was little i could almost inerringly switch back to disney channel right as the ads ended when i was channel surfing.
maybe youve never accidentally crushed a ladybug underfoot. maybe your microwave popcorn never burns. maybe you can spin around lots and lots of times before you get dizzy.
is that magic??
honestly im not sure if these are magic or just small, invisible skills. im not sure which i like better.
My ankles never twist. I’ve always been rather active, I did track for five years (all the running events), and one time while running I stepped in a hole, lost my shoe, and landed sprawling about five feet away. I pulled my shoe on and kept running.
I have a coworker who somehow makes better coffee than everyone else even though the grounds come pre-measured and all you have to do is load them up and push a button. I have a friend who has inch long nails that never break. My brother can copy origami just by looking at the finished product and my mother can do the same with knots. I knew a guy who never made an error when typing.
Maybe we all have little magics, the kind that you don’t realize you have. Just tiny things that make your life slightly better but are completely unnoticed on the outside.
this is the cutest post i have ever read…
Nooo I’ve actually shared this theory before. Like my Dad is really lucky finding parking spaces. And I’ve never cracked my phone even though I drop it on the time and have an average case. Like what if everybody gets one trivial part of their life that they’re illogically lucky at?
“Little magics”
A big abstract painting that I’ve been working on for more than two weeks. Super happy with how it turned out!

Dang, my computer was having some serious problems with the transparency in this file…
