Well, I have more than once had to deal with a variety of assumptions about why the Moon Lord Supreme DFQC, took off the upper part of his clothes, exposing his torso while taking execution by lightning. [18 episode]

Of course he could accept the punishment without undressing. And he definitely didn't do it to show off in front of XLH. (Although I think he did it very well for XLH)

I think we get the answer to this question a little later, in episode 28.

When DFQC is about to propose to XLH, but before that, he shows her his dowry and all the most valuable treasures.

The first thing the maidservant comes up and says:

-This is the fabric made of ancient dark spiders' threads and magic-proof.

I think he just wanted to show that no fabrics or artifacts protect him from lightning and he completely takes it upon himself. Throughout the drama, we see how he tries to serve his people and how important it is for him to let them know that he is not deceiving and he is honest with them.
