❛ me, too ! ❜ carl enthused, eyes lighting up GLEEFULLY. it wasn’t often that rick picked the boy up from school -- he was USUALLY at work, so carl had already been excited to see his father in the driver’s seat. but ICE CREAM ? that was a whole other thing to get excited about. there was a place not too far from carl’s school that they usually went for special occasions, like when carl had gotten the INTEGRITY award in third grade, or the ( frequent ) occasion that he got an A-PLUS on a spelling test ( his best subject ). his favorite flavor was CHOCOLATE ! and now that rick had mentioned it, carl found himself unable to think about anything else. ❛ can we get some, dad ? PLEASE ? ❜

love… the word seemed to shoot warmth through her veins. her hands gingerly caressed the back of his head, her gaze staying glued to his. he loves her… there was no sign of faking, no hint of a lie. he was telling the truth. the statement was so sincere, it almost made her cry. she leaned in, pressing a tender peck to his warm lips, her chest pressing against his. she didn’t want there to be a single inch between them. she pulled away, though stayed fairly close, lips still barely pressed to his, “i love you too.” the statement was whispered, still slightly unsure. inside, she knew she loved him, wanted only him, but hearing it and saying it were different than thinking and realizing it. she lifted her head and locked their gazes, eyes alight with intense concentration, “i love you, carl grimes.” she repeated, fingers tangling further into the brown tresses that hung down his neck.
for a moment, carl feared that she wouldn’t feel the same way -- he feared that his words, though entirely TRUTHFUL, were too impulsive and optimistic, and had scared away any prospect of carlisle ever RECIPROCATING his feelings. but she continued to run her fingers through his hair, and when she leaned forward to press another kiss to his lips, his heart skipped a beat. her following words were quiet and tentative, but carl knew that love was a difficult thing -- it came softly at first, pining and hoping for returned affection. but then she spoke again, more adamantly and with greater command. carlisle LOVED him, and the immense amount of JOY that carl felt in that moment was something he had never anticipated. the RETURN of affection from the ONLY person he wanted ... that was a feeling that he could never even begin to explain.
so, tightening his gentle hold on her, he tilted his head down to catch her lips again. he didn’t know how else to say it, how else to convey the emotions he experienced in that blissful moment -- but he figured that he didn’t need to SAY much else -- his actions said it all.

❝It’s not really far away.❞ The slight sound of her boots against the mud made the path clear to lead, as if some way they could get lost from one another. It was weird, having some company out there, on her walks around the surrounding of the safe-zone. But she trusted Carl now, more than she ever though she will do.
❝I should of told your dad about it, there’s food too.❞ Enid looked back for a second, checking just to see for his position. Her fingers pressed against the handles of her backpack, making it lean into her back, as close as she could. ❝ But it was too much of it to let go. It’s like a shelter from everything, you know?❞ Now, was she just being too much of a child to make that a secret?
❛ i get it, ❜ carl said with an understanding nod. ❛ sometimes ... sometimes you just have to get away. ❜ and that was the reason they were together today -- carl had wanted to ESCAPE, if only for a little while. he was THANKFUL that enid had found him and decided to tag along, for as much as he liked to be ALONE, he didn’t enjoy being LONELY.
their shoes crunched through the dried leaves in their path as they continued trudging through the forest, and carl inhaled a breath of the crisp autumn air. next to summer, autumn was his favorite season -- he had an abundance of good memories associated with it, and he intended to make more. perhaps today would be MEMORABLE ( he hoped it would be ).
