One of the studies cited was this forthcoming one, which found that about 1/3 of ED treatment-seeking adolescents had a history of a BMI over the 85th percentile, and those adolescents had a larger BMI decrease at the start of treatment and a longer duration of symptoms prior to seeking treatment. The authors concluded “that adolescents with a history of overweight or obesity represent a substantial portion of treatment-seeking adolescents with restrictive eating disorders, underscoring that extreme weight loss in adolescents is not healthy, regardless of whether the end weight is theoretically within a healthy range. Because eating disorders in adolescents who have history of overweight take longer to be identified, they consequently may have a poorer prognosis.”

Sharing this because I was never able to access treatment, and still struggle with recovery that I don’t trust doctors to help me access.

not a fan of all of the language of the article, but this is important, and makes a clear connection between shaming/bullying fat people, and the development of eating disorders.

This is a big part of my problem with the new “treat fat first” guidelines. It completely ignores the actual health of a person’s body in favor of “treating” the totally bullwhip measurement that is BMI.

Most Americans are surprised when I tell them tattoo parlors are illegal in Korea, and that tattoos have an unfavorable public opinion on both men and women (though that’s slowly changing with the younger generation because many of our celebrities are Korean Americans who have tattoos). But they also don’t know that tattoos were given out as punishments to Korean slaves during the Imperial Japanese occupation, particularly for women, so… I guess I am trying to understand where they’re coming from and how they think tattoos are a kind of personal expression or a type of feminism… but also I know in my head that there are many women who never got married nor had the kids they wanted; and basically hid for the rest of their lives because they were force-ably tattooed, and this issue is so traumatizing that all that is passed on from my grandmother’s generation to my mom’s generation to my generation is that tattoos are off-limits without the whole history as to why they’re off-limits. Because none of us want to be reminded of this part of Korean Woman history.

This Russia and national security scandal is getting juicier and juicier each day. If you have a TV, turn on the news. If you have a computer, read the news. If you’re a paper-person, pick up a newspaper. Obviously, he didn’t “legally” win the election when latest breaking news says that his campaign was constantly involved with a foreign country. Obviously it wasn’t “fair and square” when he lost the popular vote. And no, we’re not just gonna “GET OVER IT” because 45 isn’t just an ugly orange man we like to hate on for shits and giggles. He’s jeopardizing our security, he’s jeopardizing our future, and he’s jeopardizing our lives.
