Harvest Moon

Gwihan Valley,

3 days before the night of the harvest Moon.

The sun had barely risen over the valley , tinting the sky a deep , peaceful amber gold . Yet, the market was flooded with people, most of them still half asleep but eager to get the best of the  produce, for the feast later that night. The merchants had gone out of their way to clear the market stall, using brightly painted placards and fresh flowers to get attention from the patrons.

Gwihan valley was famed for the Harvest Festivities every year and it wasn’t uncommon for wolves from different places and neighboring clans to come visit, to enjoy both the hospitality of the Jeon clan and also the breathtaking beauty of the valley itself.

I had grown up in this paradise and the people here knew me like the back of their hands.

And yet, this swindler was trying to charge me twice the normal amount for five feet of indigo thread. It was a sacrilege.

“I had to walk all the way to the Jeguk valley last week to collect these, Seul… Have mercy…” He whined when I firmly pushed the three pieces of silver into his palm and grabbed the bundle of threads.

“That’s a lie.” I said sharply. “i saw you dyeing them in Taejoon’s backyard last tuesday…” I stuck my tongue out at him and rolled his eyes.

“Oh well, does it matter. You’re going to sell your blanket  at double the price to some  poor omega. Tell me how many did you make this year?” He asked cheerfully and I grinned.

“None” I shrugged. “ At least, none for the others. This year I only made mine…” I winked.

His wife, a middle aged woman with a greying bun gave me a fond look and chuckled.

“Finally. Although i knew you would, the moment I heard Suho tell the chief that he was going to be joining the hunt…” She said eyes twinkling and I flushed.

“Well, i want to marry him and he agrees that it’s a good idea.” I fiddled with the small bracelet he had made me a week earlier, with gold from the nearby Valley and even some uncut precious stones. I had watched him slave over his anvil and furnace, melting the cold raw gold and pouring it into the perfect mold, watching it cool and turning it into the beautiful bracelet.

What an amazing man he was.

“Did you get all the things you need for today’s feast, Seul? Your mother used to love those roasted white buns with the sesame seeds. I’ll be making a batch later… Shall I drop it off at the cottage? You’ll be there right?” She said happily and i nodded.

“I’m making songpyeon and japchae as well. Bring me some soju too!!” I begged and she laughed.

“The weaving exhibition is later in the evening, have you already given your blanket to Soulja?” She said, referring to the village chief’s wife. I nodded enthusiastically.

“I don’t know if I’ll win though … “ I said wrinkling my nose and she laughed.

“Look at that false modesty. Everyone knows, there’s no better a weaver than our Seul in the entire valley….” She said teasingly and I ducked my head blushing.

“I need to get my hanbok ready … And Lee Hi’s too…I want to add another hemline to hers.. That’s why I bought the threads,…” i held up the bundle and she smiled.

“There’s going to be a ssireum tonight! The Alphas are coming down to the village sometime mid afternoon and the village chief wants to hold the wrestling contest tonight. You should go watch that with the other young ones…” She said fondly and i nodded.

Ssireum, I though with a wince. I could never understand alphas and their need to fight over everything. Well, at least the ssireum was just a friendly wrestling competition. They would have to wrestle with thigh bands and I could imagine how competitive they would get. I knew that Suho would be there as well because alphas who were joining the hunt had to take part in the competitions.

Oh well, maybe I could go along and cheer him on. Lee Hi would definitely be there to cheer on the head alpha’s son Jeon Jung Kook. We could get good seats and maybe have a nice night.

As I walked back home, I couldn’t help but take the shortcut to the river, through a dense part of the woods. It  was shorter and would spare me from running into strangers on the market lane. I wasn’t good with strangers.

I took care not to step too hard on the jagged rocks, not looking forward to ending the day in crutches.

The path led out to the back of my cottage and I stepped out of the woods and into y backyard only to be distracted by the obvious sound of splashing. There was a small makeshift dock right near my cottage, which led down to the shallow part of the river and I could hear, whoever it was bathing in the river.

Curious, because my cottage was very far from the village and essentially  private property , I walked closer to the sound. It was probably the kids from the village having an early morning romp in the water. But they seldom did it without e around to supervise. The river was shallow yes, but you never knews.

When I stepped out into my porch and peered over the railing, I felt my entire body go stiff in surprise.

Two men stood in the base of the doc, shirtless and dressed only in worn out buckskin pants, tempered leather belts holding the fabric up. Intimidating black ink traced the curves of their torso, marking them as alphas . I crouched a bit, perring carefully. I noticed the huge black rose, winding around the neck of the shorter alpha.

They were from my clan then.

Relaxing, but only marginally, I spteeped out tentatively. I placed my basket on the porch wiping down on my thighs with my pals and hastily fluffing my hair. I hated this part but it was tradition.

I stepped out of the gate , making my way slowly to the dock. The Alphas noticed me at once, both of them stopping to stare evenly. One of the, a grey haired young man with bright twinkling eyes gave me a shameless once over and I felt myself regretting my life choices at once. I should have stayed in the cottage, god….

“Hello, alphas.” i bowed a little . “ I live here. Can I offer you anything.. in case you’re hungry?”

the taller of the two, a strapping giant with thick messy black hair that pretty much obscured his face except for his deep cherry red lips and one piercing grey eye, snorted at that.

He turned back to the water and I felt myself gasp as he shifted swiftly into the most massive wolf I had ever seen. As I watched, the large black animal swam across the river in quick powerful strokes and I was left with the other alpha who was laughing at his friend.

“Forgive his manners. He’s not used to pretty wolves…” He winked teasingly and I could feel my face go red.

“I’m Jimin. What’s your name pretty?” He said softly.

“Yeseul. “ I said shyly. He grinned.

“Are you the weaver they were talking about in the market place? The one with the river goddess’ golden hands?” He was definitely making fun of me.

I shrugged.

“People will say anything…” I grinned. I liked him,  a little. He was very pretty and not intimidating.

“Will you be taking part in the weaving exhibition in the evening? “ He asked curiously. “ I wanted to come check it out…”

I nodded.

“You must, alpha. All the omegas are putting up their woven blankets for show. You can pick your favorite blanket and maybe if you’re lucky, you will get the omega too, on the night of the hunt…” I said jokingly.

His eyes went hooded, gaze shifting to my lips .

“That’s pretty bold, omega. I haven’t heard a pick up line like that in a while…”

I stopped smiling.

“I’m not…” I said horrified. “ I wasn’t… Please forgive me, I…”

He shook his head, spraying water everywhere.

“Don’t be. I liked it. “ He winked. “ So you’re going to be in the hunt huh…? That gives me motivation. Maybe I’ll find you… You look beautiful. Bet you’d feel amazing under  me….” He licked his lips  and I hated myself . Trust me to screw up a simple conversation , and turn it into something dangerous and terrible. There was nothing more dangerous than giving an alpha false hope.

i bowed my head.

“I should… I need to go…” I stuttered.

Jimin grinned. I turned swiftly almost running away.

“I’ll see you in the evening… I’m looking forward to getting the blanket …” He called out cheerfully. “ And the omega too!!!”

I choked on air, horrified.

I ran right into my cottage and locked it. It was a joke, I told myself firmly, although my instincts were screaming at me that I had done something awful.

I swallowed. No, I wouldn’t think about it. Jimin was probably just teasing.

It was silly to overthink. Shaking my head, I quickly moved to the basket of threads and put away the extra in my cupboard.

I opened a window to let in some air and then moved to start on my hanbok for the harvest festival. I hadn’t made beautiful clothes in a long time and this time , I had designed the dress myself, both for me and Lee Hi.

The cottage wasn’t big but enough for a couple. It had a bedroom , sectioned off with plywood and a nice living space . I had put up as many wool pelts and fur quilts as possible around the place because of my tendency to trip on air. There weren’t a lot of decorations. Just a portrait of my mother and one of the blankets she had made for me  before I was born.

I stared at her for a second. She had been a lot like me, thin and frail. Not built for a life in the rugged valley but the thing was she had always fought. She had always fought to live and I wouldn’t be any different. I loved the valley and I loved the people here. They loved me too.

i caught sight of the hills and felt a shiver run through me. I couldn’t ever imagine living up there. Lee Hi told me it was cold and dangerous and there was no river or lake for me to indulge in. No meadows with wildflowers, no woods to explore. i couldn’t imagine living in damp, cold caves, threatened every second of the day. I was grateful that the alphas did that for us. That they watched out for us on the mountains but I couldn’t stomach the idea of being forced to live there.

But it didn’t matter, I would never have to go there anyway.

With Suho, I could live here forever. I would help him with his trade and raise our pups. Suho would be kind and nice to me .

And everything would be absolutely perfect.

“Ugh… I hate this.. it looks hideous.” Lee Hi wrinkled her nose as we watched Soulja hang the blankets for the exhibition. She was pointing at her own blanket, a pale mauve affair with rather mismatched patterns.

“Well, at least you’re good at what matters. Besides, didn’t you tell me that was Jung Kook’s favorite color… He’s going to love it.” I said soothingly.

A burly alpha brushed past me , knocking me off balance and she wrapped an arm around me.

“Hey bird brain!! Watch where you’re going!!” She snarled at him and he looked stunned as he bowed and walked away faster.

“Don’t do that… You’re making people stare! “ i said, mortified, but she merely brushed the hair off my face, smiling.

“I’m not letting anyone hurt my little swallow.” She teased.

I grinned.

“By  the way , did you see Suho?” She asked and I nodded, watching as Soulja hung up another pretty blanket. Many blankets looked lovely and I smiled. Earlier this year, all the omegas taking part in the hunt had come to me to learn and I had taught them a lot of artistic stitching patterns. Seemed like many of them had put the instructions to good use.

“Why isn’t he here yet, the other alphas are already arriving.” She said curiously, perring over at the entrance.

I immediately caught a glimpse of Jimin who seemed to zoom into me at once. He was with a different alpha this time and to my horror he muttered something to his friend , who also glanced up at me and started to walk over to us swiftly.

He was coming closer and closer and I felt myself shriveling next to Lee Hi. I hated this… I wasn’t made for public interactions or confrontations, least of all with Alphas who looked like they wanted to swallow me whole. He ran his fingers through his thick grey hair , eyes all but burning with intent and I felt like someone was squeezing my insides.  

Jimin kept coming closer and just as my heart beat went ricocheting, he stopped, grinning wide. He held his arms open swooping down for a hug and I yelped, almost stumbling back but the arms never came around .

I peeked up, only to find that he was hugging Lee Hi and grinning cheekily at me over her shoulders.

“Jimin… where’s Kook? I’ve been looking for him everywhere…” Lee Hi said impatiently and Jimin grinned.

“You know him… probably hiding from the two dozen omegas tailing him all over the place. Who’s this… introduce me to your pretty friend, Lee.” He winked and Lee Hi pushed him away.

“:Hands and eyes off, Jimin . She’s already spoken for.” She said firmly stepping in between both of us.  

“Really? Funny… i don’t see a promise mark…or a mating mark…” He reached out and tugged my blouse off my shoulder unceremoniously and I yelped.

Lee Hi shoved him away.

“I’m serious. She’s marrying Suho.”

Jimin frowned.

“Wait, the blacksmith? I didn’t know he was choosing a mate this time. “

“Well he is and Suho and Seul have an agreement…” Lee Hi said firly. i knew she meant well but couldn’t help feeling a bit annoyed that she was telling Jimin all about me.

“Well, may the better wolf win.” He tilted his head and I blinked.

What did that mean?

“Look there’s Jung Kook!” Jimin said suddenly and I turned instinctively.

My jaw went slack.

It was the same alpha I had seen with Jimin in the river, except he had cleaned up, really well. He wore a silk shirt, in midnight black with plain black pants. His hair was styled off his face and I couldn’t stop staring because he was absolutely beautiful.

All my life, I had been convinced that Suho was the most beautiful alpha but…this one. I continued to stare at him as he made his way to us and I could see seven or eight omegas ogling hi, hanging around and giggling. He towered over everyone in the assembly and the way he moved, slow but purposeful made my knees shake just a little.

His eyes darted to me for just a second before focusing on Lee Hi. He smiled faintly, showing too white teeth and Lee Hi hugged him close , the minute he reached us.

“ I’ve been looking for you everywhere…” She said , burrowing her nose in his neck. He chuckled softly before patting her back.

“I need to go get ready for the ssireum. I was looking to find Jimin…”

“Jung Kook , this is Seul…The one i keep telling you about…” Lee Hi said brightly. I smiled and bowed my head.

“Good evening, Sire.” I said respectfully and he nodded. 

“My mother is very fond of your fabrics. She tells me you are very good at what you do.” He said politely and I smiled at the compliment. 

He turned quickly to Jimin. 

“Come on , Jimin hyung. “

“Wait… aren’t you guys going to wait for the winner of the weaving competition?” Lee Hi said excitedly and Jung Kook frowned. 

“There’s a competition now?” He looked around and I could see his eyes cloud impatiently. Not his thing then. He was probably only into fighting and hunting. I remembered how big his wolf had been and internally shuddered. i would hate to be the one staring that down in a fight. 

“Yes… all the omegas in the hunt weave tapestries . The best one wins.” Lee Hi grinned, runing her fingers through his hair. 

“Well, the winner of the ssireum gets the tapestry….. And a kiss from the omega who weaves it.” Jimin said teasingly , eyes trained on me and I spluttered. 

“That’s,… not true!” I cried out before I could stop myself. 

Lee Hi laughed.

“It’s just a little kiss , Seul. She’s terrified because it’s almost certain that she’s going to be the one giving it away later.” She winked .

Jung Kook looked bored.“Well, good luck with that. I still need to go….” He was staring expectantly at Jimin and the grey haired alpha sighed.

 “See you lovely ladies, later then.” He winked at me and I glanced away. 

“He’s handsome isn’t he?” Lee Hi said with a nudge and I laughed.

“Very handsome , you guys will look great together.” I said honestly. She grinned. 

“I can’t wait to start our life together. He’s so intelligent, Seul. There’s so many things about our allied clans and our rivals that he knows. Remember the last tie we had that dispute with the . And he’s never been defeated in any battle. I can imagine how amazing it must be to have him teach me all that…” She said, sounding awed. 

I nodded, linking my arms with hers. They really were perfect for each other.

“How did this even happen?” Lee Hi said with smile while everyone cheered. Jimin had just lost to Suho and I couldn’t help but grin and applaud enthusiastically. Jimin had gotten distracted by a pretty red haired omega in the front row and Suho had used the distraction to trip him into the pit. 

“Well, its Jung Kook and Suho now…” Lee Hi said with a glint in her eye. “ Your man against mine…” 

I laughed. 

“Suho won’t win. And i don’t think he’d mind either. “ I said with a shrug. Jung Kook was so much bigger and stronger than Suho but Suho was already laughing, hugging Jimin. It was all in good fun after all. 

Sure enough , the fight with Jung Kook was short lived. The taller omega was better built and very quick on his feet, his eyes narrowed in competitive cocentration. The crowd cheered loudly as Jung Kook won and was declared the champion. I joined the crowd of oegas as they rushed to congratulate Jung Kook, throwing small woven wreaths and garlands on his neck and smothering the tall alpha in hugs and compliments. 

I grinned and made my way to Suho, who was standing on the other end. 

“I’m so proud of you…” I said brightly and he laughed aloud, reaching out and pulling e into a war hug. I giggled as he nuzzled the edge of my neck. 

“Anything for you , my pretty. You won the weaving contest…. I’m so proud of you too…” He kissed the top of my forehead and I sighed, relaxing in his arms. He was always war , no matter how cold the weather got. I kissed his cheeks shyly and turned my head, still wrapped around hi and I found myself staring directly at Jung Kook. 

The alpha stood about two dozen feet away but his eyes were trained unblinkingly on me. He was glaring fiercely , the anger in his gaze so evident that I staggered a little. 

He looked absolutely livid. 

Confused and a little disoriented, i turned back to Suho. 

“What’s wrong , sweetheart?” Suho said softly and I shook my head, trying to smile.

“It’s nothing …. I just…”

Rough fingers wrapped around my wrist, yanking me away from him. I stumbled and nearly crashed , jerking when strong arms came around me, keeping me from falling . I found myself staring up at Jeon Jung Kook, his eyes till angry but his lips twisted in an eerie smile. 

“I believe , you owe me a kiss….” He said loudly , causing all the elders and the other villagers to laugh loud. 

“He’s right , child. Jung Kook has earned it!” Someone called out and even Suho was laughing. 

“Go ahead, sweetheart. “ Suho said cheerfully and the endearment made Jung Kook tighten his grip on me, so much so that it was beginning to hurt. “  He won fair and square .” 

“It’s just a kiss on the cheek…” Lee Hi called out cheerfully and I stared up at him, trying to force a smile. 

“Congratulations sire…” I choked out. 

“For what?” He said softly, eyes boring hole into mine and I swallowed. 

“I…the ssireum… you won…” I pointed out, laughing nervously but he didn’t smile. 

“I did , didn’t I?” He glanced at Suho, “ Then why do I feel like I’ve lost?” 

It took me a second to understand what he was implying. 

I opened my mouth, ready to protest , but he gripped my arms, hauling me off my feet and pressing his lips to mine. 

Fireworks went off inside my skull, the raw power in the kiss rendering me helpless, his lips closing over mine with enough lust to make me stagger. I choked, trying to push him away. 

It was over before I could fully start struggling and he just stood there, a look of smug satisfaction on his face, like he’d won something. Like he’d proven some point. 

Suho had stopped smiling and even Lee Hi looked confused. 

Jung Kook glanced up at Suho and smiled . 

“It’s mine now, I believe.” He said calmly. 

Suho frowned.

“Sire?” He said eyes blazing. 

“The tapestry. Isn’t that mine now?” He said evenly glancing around and the elders nodded enthusiastically. I could see the other omegas whispering excitedly and Lee Hi was looking genuinely upset. 

“Give it to him , Seul. It’s his now…” Soulja said brightly and I willed myself not to fall flat on my face as I went over to her in wobbly legs. I took the richly wrapped bundle with the satin sash and made my way back to Jung Kook. 

He was still staring at me as he took the bundle.

“I… wish you the best , at tomorrow’s hunt, Sire.” I said , voice shaking just a little. 

Jung Kook chuckled , bending low so only I could hear. 

“Now that i know what I’m hunting… I believe I’ll have a lot of fun tomorrow night.” He whispered. 

I stared up at him in disbelief. He wasn’t serious, was he? He couldn’t possibly mean what I thought he meant…

It was like in a space of a few minutes, I had gone from living my dream into waking up into a nightmare.

“You want to what?” Suho said angrily, glaring at me. 

“I want to pull out of the hunt, Suho. Please…let’s talk to the elders. We can get married directly… This is silly ..this is…” 

“Seul… Are you listening to yourself? The hunt is how I prove myself as a worthy alpha. If I don’t take part in the hunt, I may as well give up my status as an alpha.!” He said roughly. “ I can’t face the villagers again if I back out of it.!” 

I bit my lips.

“I’m just… I’m scared . “ I whispered.  I’m scared that Jung Kook wasn’t joking. I’m scared that he’ll do something awful that would destroy all my dreams. 

Suho sighed deeply.

“ It’s just for one night . And you’ll be in your wolf for. There’;s nothing to be scared of… I’ll find you soon. Then we’ll mate and it will be fine.  “ He said soflty. 

 Not if he finds me first. 

“ I just… “ I stared down at my feet. 

“Is this about Jung Kook?” He said suddenly and I glanced up. 

I didn’t say anything and Suho laughed out loud. 

“Oh sweetheart, you’re so silly. You don’t think he actually is going to come for you, do you?” Suho shook his head. “ The entire clan knows that Jung Kook is Lee Hi’s mate. She has been trained to be the chieftain since the time she was born . There’s no way he’s picking you over her…” 

I bit my lips, feeling foolish. 

“He was just teasing you because you always look so wide eyed and terrified and sometimes, Alphas enjoy getting omegas flustered. He probably was just having a bit of fun with you… Don’t get worried over stuff like that…”

 Now that I know what I’m hunting , I’ll have fun tomorrow night. 

 It certainly hadn’t sounded like he was teasing. 

“Suho… I’m scared…why can’t you understand…?”

“And why can’t you understand? How any more years are you going to be so silly? You’re scared of everything but this really takes the cake. Everyone in the village knows that you wouldn’t last a day in the mountains. No mountain alpha is going to want that kind of a burden! And just because I chose to stay and help the villagers, it doesn’t mean that I’m not an alpha. I can’t just give up my dignity because you can’t  get over your silliness!” 

I flinched as he glared at me.

“I can’t force you to participate in the hunt. But I’m going to be there Ye Seul. You can either trust me and wait for me in the woods tonight or…” He stared me down , “ I’ll just find an omega who is willing. “ 

The words cut deep and I felt tears brim over my eyes. Suho stormed out of my cottage slamming the door behind him. 

I sighed deeply. 

every instinct told me to run. 

To get as far away from Jung Kook as possible. That if I went out into the woods tonight, I would regret it for the rest of my life. But Suho was going to be there and the thought of losing hi, the thought of some other omega mating hi, hurt me so bad that I wanted to sob. 

I took a deep shuddering breath. Maybe Suho was right, I told myself firmly. Jung Kook would gain nothing by mating me. He could have anyone and he was always meant to be with Lee Hi anyway. I had to stop getting scared . 

I stared out into the darkening sky wondering why I couldn’t stop shaking.

In a few hours, dusk would fall. 

 And then the Harvest Moon would begin to rise.

"Snookums, did you witness the fight that took place around tonight full moon paradise club at Marseille?", he mumbled softly as his fingers continued to shuffle through the pages of the new fashion magazine.

He chipped before holding up his mug and pressing it against her cheeks before bringing it back to his lips and savouring a few sips of coffee out of the coffee mug.

"Innocent? I'm supposed to fuck that hell of a husband into oblivion for the next heir of the company." "Say less, bubblegum. Words of filth laced with profanity would arouse this dearest of a friend of yours."

An unrecognised huff left her lips on noticing how much her best friend was enjoying this part of the whole conversation.

"I see, my sex life interests you? You roach, your love life won't be this fucked the way it is today because anyone did marry a handsome and loving gentleman like you. But for you to know and believe the otherwise, I assure you that you won't find a spouse in next twenty years." The gentle ripples shuddered their way out of the mug as the brown-headed male shook his hands up into the air in defence.

"Assuring is a part of psychology that I wouldn't want to deal with, bubblegum and that's not called roach, it's said to be a massive crotch. Furthermore, If I were to have a spouse tucked in my bed for late hours of the night, I'd have it in one go."

A box-like smile climbed its way on both of their lips at the uninvited mockery.

He was exactly what you needed to forget the chaos back at your abode. A platonic sense of friendship says laughter could be a good sense of healing and this friend of yours wasn't going to act like an undergraduate when it came to that. Chapter Five

Your eyes are fixed to the perfectly cut orange wedge that floats on top of your Aperol Spritz. You circle your straw around it, the clink of the ice hitting the glass throwing you right back into time and space.

The music is muffled by the loud chatter of the people scattered around the bar. Some in tables, some standing in corners, aimlessly engaging in conversations that lead nowhere, everywhere – some just passing the time until its, quote on quote, morally correct to end up in each other’s beds.

Jungkook had always had a preference for the innocent ones.
